Some of the most spectacular mountain scenery to be found in South Africa is to be found in the north eastern Free State around Clarens. The Golden Gate National Park is situated close to this picturesque little town and contains the most majestic part of this area. The park stretches up to the Lesotho border and consists of 11,600ha of mountain grassland (it is hoped soon to be enlarged by the inclusion of the QwaQwa National Park). The Rhebok Trail stretches out into this area and allows the hiker to experience the spectacular scenery which includes the rich coloration of the sandstone cliffs that give rise to the parks name. Wildlife in the park includes Eland and Black Wildebeest. Day 1 - 14 km: The first day of the trail starts off with quite a steep ascent up Brandwag. To prevent erosion the path is concreted in places but this does not seem to detract in any way from the natural feel of the trail. Day 2 – 14 km: An early start is again advisable as the walk can take anything up to 8hrs. The first part of the day's walk consists of a walk along the Ribbokspruit. Overnight Accommodation Trail: The Rhebok Hut has bunk beds and mattresses, a kitchen area, an outside braai area with firewood supplied, flush toilets and a shower with a donkey for hot water. Location: The Cannibal Hiking Trail is situated 5km from Clarens on the road to Fouriesburg. It is 280km from both Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, tarred road all the way. We only have MTN signal on the farm. Route Description: It is a 2-day hiking trail. The 1st day is 9km and the 2nd day is 7,5km. A walk to the Mushroom Rock adds an optional extension of 2,5km on the 2nd day. Accommodation: The 1st night can be spent in one of two dormitories. Old School House: Has 8 bunk beds and can sleep 16. It has 4 toilets and 4 showers. At the 1st overnight facility, we provide a bed and mattress, braai grid, wood, cold and hot water, showers and a fridge. Wood is provided to start a fire, thereafter wood is sold per bag. About Antjie se Pad was named after a certain Antjie Stuurman who worked on the farm in the 1930s. Every day, she walked about 10 km over a hill called Blouberg to reach the Witteklip farmstead. This is a Circular route of 36 km. 1st day 18.5km, 2nd day 13.5km Huts: The Langebos Huts, situated within the forest, are the base huts for the trail and it is recommended that hikers stay at these huts the night before leaving for the first day. Two huts, 2 bedrooms each, sleeps 4 per hut, 2 double beds, 4 single beds. Hikers are welcome to spend the night at the Langebos huts at the end of the second day's hike and the huts are also available for hiring separate to the trail experience. The trail is 42 km long over a period of 4 days. You average 10km of hiking along the coast a day, the hike takes you along a virtually unexplored stretch of the West Coast close to the farming community of Koekenaap. The route curves through breathtaking nature scenes and follows through cliffs on the beaches of the West coast. A variety of birds can be seen, especially the Swart Tobie. You’ll walk through rustic remote and swathes of wildflowers and along beautiful and mostly inaccessible beaches, as well as experience fascinating coastal landforms. Part of the route takes you to a diamond mine not usually accessible to the public. This and the sheer beauty of the lonely coastline little explored by visitors and locals to the area, tidal pools filled with crayfish and mussels, and the chance to explore some of the most incredible rock formations make this hike not only one of the best kept secrets of the West Coast and a must-do. Two- or four-day trails are available, and a certain amount of experience is needed. If low tide falls over mid-day – trail can be regarded as moderate. High tide at mid-day changes difficulty to strenuous. The trail is a wilderness slackpacking trail, and you need to supply everything except water, and firewood. Your accommodation is rustic so bring all your creature comforts with - This trail should be regarded as a wilderness experience. Trail Details: (4- 5 Days; 52.2 km) Day one and two can be combined but this is not advisable. Day 1: Groot Turn to Brakwater (4 km: 2 - 3 hrs). Zip X Trails, Middleburg, Mpumalanga For a list of all our trails and establishments, please visit our website, www.fagalavoet.co.za. Zip X hiking trails are situated 40 km out of Middelbyrg Mpumalanga on the N11 road to Groblersdal. The routes in this area is nestled in the mountains overlooking Loskop Dam, and being on the escarpment, varies from 1450 meters above sea level to 950 meters. There is unique tree species in the area, specifically cycads, and an abundance of birds and other wildlife may be spotted. Strange geological formations can be found, and there is even a very old abandoned mine where crystals can be picked up. Hels River Trail: The trail starts at Zip X reception at an altitude of 1381 agl, Follow down a road for 1 km until you do a sharp descend to the Hels River. Already an abundance of cycads (Encephalartos Lanatus) can be seen. Mountain Ribbok and Klipspringer may also be encountered. You then follow the flow of the river for 5 km where Hels River runs into the Olifants River. If you do the 2 day trip, and plan to stay at our camp at the Olifants River, take sleeping bags, mattresses, eating utensils, and food and drinks. Water from Hels river is drinkable, water from Olifants River is not. The same route is taken back, and one-way this trail is 5,5 kms. long. It is rated as very difficult. (5/5) A guide is normally provided if available, but the trail can also be done without one if you are experienced enough. Kranskloof Trail: The trail starts at Zip X reception at an altitude of 1381 agl, the route follows a trail up the koppie and along the ridge up to the top of the cliffs overlooking the Hels River. A scramble down the cliffs follows, ropes installed where it is necessary. Situated about 20km north east of Carolina, Mpumalanga, Suikerboschfontein offers 38km of trails which include base camp, backpack, and day trails. The farm of 1244 hectare is within easy reach of Gauteng (250km). Suikerboschfontein has been in the Van Niekerk family for over 100 years and was proclaimed the Paulina van Niekerk Nature Reserve in 1965. Due to large variation in terrain forms and flora, Suikerboschfontein can be visited throughout the year. There is not necessarily a “best season” for hiking in this beautiful nature reserve. Overnight Routes Rooikrans to Oom Japie (10 km) The first part of the route winds through large rocks until it reaches the cliff (Grootkloof). The trail then goes along the edge to Mooifontein waterfall. This part of the route is dangerous, and hikers must be very careful. After crossing a grassland hill the trail descends to the S-draaikloof with numerous waterfalls and shady trees. Oom Japie to Rooikrans (10 km) This trail descends for 2km through grasslands into the valley to the foot of Geelhoutkrans. There is a beautiful resting spot in the shade of large yellowwood trees. Rock art and Bobbejaanhotel will be found just a little bit further on. Hikers can leave their packs here and climb the steel ladders to explore the “hotel”. It’s not an easy hike down the valley and over the mountains and recommended only for healthy and experienced hikers. It can be walked either from the Bermanzi Berg Resort side sleeping in The Stables the first night or from the Mt Komati Escarpment Adventures side sleeping in the Aloe Kaya camp the first night. Starting from Bermanzi (10,5 km): The trail starts close to the accommodation. At the Bermanzi side of the Bankspuit there are poles with numbers at strategic spots and white footmarks on the rocks to help you. Starting from Aloe Kaya Camp (10km): From the ALOE KAYA Camp, the path starts about 100 m up the access road. Kranskloof hiking trail is a stunning trail that combines gorges, streams and the Highveld plateaus that offer beautiful vistas of the surrounding landscape. Basecamp: The Kranskloof basecamp is hidden beautifully away in indigenous bush and is built from the local rock. Nearby is a perennial little waterfall a mere 70m away from camp, where the water cascades to offer an exhilarating shower in summer months. The calming sounds of the waterfall is soothing to the soul. Well behaved dogs are welcome but please be aware that this is a nature reserve and there are things out there that can be hurt and can hurt your animals. Kingdom Trails is a 15,000 ha privately owned nature reserve, one of the largest in Mpumalanga and South Africa. This pristine nature area is about 120 km north-east of Pretoria and Johannesburg. Tuesday After a scrumptious breakfast we are now ready for the scenic Bakker’s Pass. The distance from Indaka Lodge to Kransberg Lodge is approximately 11 km. Wednesday After breakfast the long and scenic stretch to Shakawe Private Game Reserve awaits us. This is a 19 km hike along the Kransberg Mountain range. Thursday After breakfast we will leave the beautiful Shakawe Private Game Reserve for our last short walk to Rankin’s Pass. This 30-kilometer, three day trail, traverses half of the blyde river canyon nature reserve as well as privately owned land, from the misty heights of graskop to the bourke’s luck potholes. Although the route tends to follow the contour lines, the terrain is mountainous at times and a responsible degree of fitness is required. The route is marked by yellow footprints, painted onto rocks. Day 1 Paradise camp to Watervalspruit hut Starting at paradise camp, on the gods window loop road outside the town of graskop, the route takes you through montane grassland past weathered quartzize rocks into the little watervalspruit valley and onto the watervalspruit hut which is 3 km from paradise camp. Day 2 Watervalspruit hut to Clearstream hut On the second day, the trail takes you 13,5km through a landscape of strangely sculptured rocks brightly coloured with lichens, into the treur river valley. Skirting ravines and patches of indigenous forest – you emerge at the clearstream hut. Day 3 Clearstream hut to Old Mine hut This 13,6km stretch of the trail leaves the blyde river canyon nature reserve just beyond clearstream to follow the treur river past the new chum falls. On this section, the trail passes a spot where the wagons of the great trek reconnaissance party were believed to have camped. The trail re-enters the nature reserve just before the bourkes luck potholes, which marks the confluence of the treur and blyde rivers and the start of the blyde river canyon. In 1912 Frederich Haschke bought the farm Mickberg (15 000 hectares) for £2 500. It was then known as the waterless farm. He immediately started building a house for Martha Feiber, his wife to be. Building material for the house was imported from Germany to Lüderitz Bay, from where it was railed to Klein-Karas station. A steel tyred wagon was used to transport the material from Klein-Karas station to the farm. The main building The White House has a communal dining room, fully equipped kitchen, living room and barbeque area. In the kitchen you will find a well-stocked fridge with cold beer, wine, soft drinks and water. Tea, coffee, sugar and milk are also available in the kitchen. Our main building is fully equipped with modern amenities, and each room has its own private shower and toilet facilities. Will Chalets Each chalet has a fully equipped kitchenette, well stocked fridge with cold beer, wine, soft drinks and water, private barbeque area and en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and wash basin. Before 1937 this arid land with its awesome loneliness belonged to the government of the old “Duits Suidwes-Afrika” and was reckoned not to be suitable for farming because of its scarcity of water.
