I was asked to write about the food I have been preparing for my up and coming hike. Previously I have prepared my own dinners and chosen freeze dried meals for lunch, but I have made my dinners with dried products that I could find in the grocery store. I have grown tired of the selection quickly, and when I saw @terriertokig drying her own ingredients I decided to that as well. She shared some recipes with me, and I found some in a book my brothers gifted me once. But I have made the choice to go with wheat berry instead of rice a lot of the times, and have decided to let it soak before cooking it just like I do with pasta. It reduces the cooking time and I don’t have to cook it only to dry it at home. Some of the foods I have prepared and dried are taco soya mince, cheese, lime zest, mushrooms, leek, lentils, rice seasoned with saffron and chili. On the trail I will be enjoying tacos, lentil stews, pasta with mushrooms, lime lentils with quinoa and saffron rice. I have once, a few years ago, prepared all my meals for a hike by myself and dried some ingredients, but despite following recipes for meals for hiking I found they didn’t give me enough energy. I felt drained. Combining freeze dried meals and home made meals is a combo though that has worked very well for me. Campfire Hobo Packets with Savory Beef and Vegetables Ingredients: 1 lb ground beef 4 potatoes, thinly sliced 2 carrots, thinly sliced 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced 1 zucchini, thinly sliced Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup barbecue sauce 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons olive oil Aluminum foil Directions: Preheat your grill or campfire. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Tear off four large pieces of aluminum foil, each about 12 inches long. Divide the sliced potatoes, carrots, onion, bell pepper, and zucchini evenly among the foil pieces. Top each foil packet with a portion of the seasoned ground beef mixture. Drizzle olive oil over the top of each packet. Fold the foil over the ingredients and seal tightly. Post 2 of 2- Day 4 of 5 | 42.6 Kilometers 🥾 Yabberup to Grimwade on the @bibbulmun Track. 🌄On the track Update: Today was such a big day I've broken it up into 2 posts. Today was hot! 33C degrees on trail, that's in the shade. When you're in the sun, you're just hot. Saw a horse, wasn't overly friendly, I get it when I look like this 😂. I arrived pretty early at the 20k mark at Noggerup, only to find the only water tank at Noggerup had it's tap knocked out, and it had emptied almost it's entire contents of water. FULL ON PANIC MODE I only had 500mls of water to go another 24km. All sorts runs through your head when it's hot and you have no water. How much can I drink in Bear Grylls style to survive? Thankfully it didn't come to that.... and I used my hiking tent peg, which fits into Philips head screws, unscrewed the screws on the lid and was able to paracord down my water bottle to the bottom of the tank and extracted 3.5 litres! Thank f*ck!! I bloody MacGuyver'd my way into survival. I reported it to DPAW, who I heard acted fairly quickly, and had water tanks there the next day. The remaining 24ks were hot, and I was still riding the nerves of finding myself in a legitimate survival scenario. The final 6ks were slow, my feet were now hurting, but I made it to Grimwade by 4:30, and I was glad! ⛺ Grimwade was my favourite site, mainly because it had 2 full and functional tanks, facing a valley, the sun rise & set can be viewed from the hut. 🥣Food on the trail Lunch was @backcountrycuisine top 3 meal of the trip, Honey Soy Chicken. Dinner, I pigged out because I exhumed so many calories, and it's the last night, why not lighten the load! The @camperspantry Spicy Mexican Beans, was delicious, and the Back Country Chicken Tikka, also delicious. Lovely plush but thin wicking hiking socks. we started the day we're doing some blister maintenance then we hit the Trail at 6:45 body's feeling pretty good I do have some aches and pains but nothing too serious just a bit stiff, but onxe we started walking they go away. Feet are holding up okay don't have any blisters we're just doing some prevention. 42ks on the clock. Gonna be a hot one with 33 Celsius forecast. So early Ks will be Important. Pack is now much lighter, carrying only 2ls of water and we've eaten into most of the food. Walking past Glen Mervyn Dam, it's sitting REAL low. Not sure if that's par of the course for this dam, but it sets a tone for the rest of the day. Going past @themumbypub and through Mumbalup you can see how dry everything is. Today was the hottest day on trail and our biggest day. What happens next post is the scariest thing to happen to me on trail. 🥣Food on the trail Breakfast, was on the go as we had to hit some nice early kilometres. 4x @carmanskitchen Bars, they've got a great calorie to carb to weight ratio, really cheap, and worked so well I'll be bringing these every trip with me. Meal Planning For An Overnight Backpacking Trip THIS was all the backpacking food I brought with me for my recent 5 day/4 night backpacking trip along the Trans Catalina Trail on Catalina Island in Southern California. I brought with me all of my current favorites! As a food motivated hiker, it’s really important to me to be excited about what’s in my food bag. Otherwise, I might not eat my food. And the only other option to not eating the backpacking food I pack is to have to carry it. Who wants to carry extra food on any trip? Here’s what I brought: * 3 Breakfasts (I divided the biscuits & gravy into two portions) * 4 Lunches * 2 Dinners, but I always pack an extra meal, just incase * 20 Snacks. This was more than I needed since I came home with a few extra snacks, but I always pack extra snacks * 5 Electrolytes, 1 for each day of hiking, plus 1 extra. I’m so glad I packed that extra electrolyte because I ended up using it on Day 1 when we had all the heat! While hiking the Trans Catalina Trail, we had a couple different opportunities to eat “real” food while we were out there, which meant we didn’t have to carry as much food. Day 3 of 5 | 41.8 Kilometers 🥾Harris Dam to Yabberup via Collie on the @bibbulmun Track. 🌄On the track Update: Got up at 550 started to pack, we got on the road at 630. Passed by Harris Dam which is an epic vision of cut stone with a lake, a big picnic area with garden areas, and the beginning of some mountain bike trails. Body's feeling pretty good, a couple of sore points on my Achilles and the top of my front the shoes. Goal for camp today is 430-5pm with a stop in Collie to charge up my batteries and grab some food. A lot of tossing at night, not sure if it's the sleep pad and I'm just not comfortable or if I'm just uncomfortable after walking. Thankfully most of the elevation is behind me today. Looking forward to seeing how the body holds up for 42ks today. Feet at camp held up pretty well, and ended up trail running the last 3ks of the track. Feeling good! Yabberup was my very first overnighter I've ever done, as the Wellington spur trail, so it's was pretty cool to be back here. ⛺The campsite was a classic double bunk hut, with 2 water tanks. Loads of tent sites, with a nice fire pit that I can't use due to fire bans. A very curious Wallaby visits this site often, he got within a metre from me, very cool experience. 🥣Food on the trail Breakfast, @radixnutrition Apple. Quite nice, very high calorie, packed full of protein and seeds and fruit which was nice, but with the same bit of a funky taste from maybe the plant based milk or protein powder it's enriched with. Lunch, I stopped at Collie to charge up the battery bank and phone, so had to grab a @chickentreat_au Chicken Roll and chippies. Day 2 of 5 | 34.5 Kilometers 🥾Possum Springs to Harris Dam on the @bibbulmun Track. 🌄On the track Update: Fitness is fine, just hope the niggles don't stop me. My feet are what hurt the most last year, but so far no sign of that in these shoes, the @tarkineathletics Trail Devil. Had a rubbing point on my back but I folded up my buff and that's seems to have protected that. We've got 33.6ks on the cards, which somehow gained a km. Starting at 8am, we reached the destination by 4. Stopped for an hour at Yourdamung Campsite and was chatting with a German backpacker Hanna's. He was spending 45 days on track and was staying at every hut, from North Cliff to Kalamunda. When he started, his pack weighed 35kgs 😱 as he had nowhere to store his belongings, but he met a couple from Perth who housed some gear for him. He still has a pack weight of 24kg 🥲 ⛺The campsite was a classic double bunk hut, with 2 water tanks. Loads of tent sites, although the toilet seems set way off in the distance for weary hikers. 🥣Food on the trail Breakfast, @radixnutrition Mixed Berry. Very high calorie, packed full of protein and seeds and fruit which was nice, a bit of a funky taste from maybe the plant based milk or protein powders it's enriched with. Day 1 of 5 | 26.3 kilometers 🥾Driver Road to Possum Springs on the Bibbulmun Track. ⚖️Base weight 4.5kg 🎒Total Pack Weight 10.75Kgs with 3 kg of food, 3L of Water and 250gm of gas 🌄On the track there was pretty hectic undulations around the conveyor, which happens to be the Southern Hemispheres longest conveyor, thanks to bauxite mining in the region. ⛺The campsite was a modest mud hut, with no bunks, but did have 2 water tanks. As we were the only ones there I pitched to pitch the tent inside using the big rock little rock method. 🥣Food on the trail that wasn't prepared by me was a nice change, and I've kept some really stupid framing in because frankly I found it funny 😂 @camperspantry Indian Chicken Pilaf, my favourite for the whole trail @backcountrycuisine Spaghetti Bolognaise, it was exactly that Campers Pantry x @vdlcreamery Freeze Dried Chocolate Gelato, this is freaking delicious, but I'd recommend sharing, it gets a lot.
