🇩🇪🇨🇭 Tell me you are Swiss without telling me you are Swiss. The Golf Mk4 isn’t exactly the rarest vehicle in Europe, but 99% of them are equipped with the 100ps 1.6L engine, or one version of the 1.9L TDI diesel engine. Real car spotting connoisseurs, however, will seek rarer models: for example, the painfully slow SDI model, with its naturally aspirated (!) diesel engine, or one of the (many) performance variants that sit at the opposite end of the range. When it comes to that, the most obvious versions are the 1.8T GTI (150 and later 180ps) and of course, the undisputed monarch of the Mk4 series, the 2002-2004 R32 with 4WD and a 241ps V6 engine. This late coming model stood toe-to-toe with the era’s best hot hatches like the Renault Mégane RS, the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA, and the Ford Focus RS. In Geneva, however, I was lucky to stumble upon two even more elusive and obscure models. The first (pics #1-2-3) is the Golf V5. At the launch of the Golf Mk4 in 1997, this unconventional 2.3L V5 engine was the largest in the range—actually a VR6 minus one cylinder. Other than sounding extremely cool, the 150ps V5 Golf had absolutely no advantage over the faster, lighter and more economical 1.8T GTI, which delivered the exact same power... The second (pics #4-5-6) is the 1999 Golf V6 4Motion: a precursor to the R32, combining VW's giant 2.8L VR6 engine with a 4WD transmission. Despite its 204ps, it wasn’t designed as a sports car but as a luxury GT compact, allowing you to cruise at 233km/h on the Autobahn, all while maintaining the appearance of a standard Golf. Both the V5 and V6 models were pricey, very very pricey, so much so that absolutely nobody bought them. Except of course the Swiss... Indeed, being Swiss basically consists of being very rich but trying desperately not to show it (the opposite of being American, Russian or Chinese in a way). I can't help but picture myself a Swiss customer walking into a VW dealership in Geneva or Zurich, briefcase full of cash in hand, casually requesting the priciest Golf available, and driving away with an over-powered full-option vehicle, so well-equipped it cost twice as much as a standard 1.4L Golf...
