Visited the Goodwife Eunice Cole Memorial today, this is likely the site where she died in 1680. She was the only convicted Witch from New Hampshire and remains this way. New Hampshire has YET to officially exonerate Goodwife Cole! In May 2023 Legislation to acknowledge the injustice dealt accused witch Eunice Cole passed the New Hampshire House 317 to 45, but failed the Senate 14 to 10. Eunice “Goody” Cole (1590/1607-1680) was the only woman convicted of witchcraft in New Hampshire. Accused of #witchcraft three times but never fully convicted, she eventually died alone. When this #witch of #hampton was found dead she was buried in an unmarked grave. Legend says she was staked when found to “exorcise the baleful influence she possessed”, others say her grave was staked with a horseshoe hung upon it. Mostly known to be a disagreeable old woman , eventually the people of Hampton created an organization meant to clear Eunice’s name in 1937, “The Society in Hampton Beach for the Apprehension of Those Falsely Accusing Eunice Cole of Having Familiarity with the Devil”. Or shortened to “The Goody Cole Society”. They marked a space for her with a large stone (shown in the bottom left of the image), but some say her staked ghost still haunts Hampton. Day 24. Goody Cole. Eunice “Goody” Cole was one of New England’s many so-called 17th century witches, imprisoned and trialed three times for alleged witchcraft over the course of her life. Allegations against her included her taking the forms of animals, being able to see and hear everything despite living in isolation, creating storms that sank ships and being responsible for several deaths with her powers. Eventually, she was hung for witchcraft but so fearsome was her reputation, that after her death, a stake was driven through her like a vampire and rocks were placed over her grave. Apparently this wasn’t enough to contain her spirit, and both legends and sightings of her ghost persist to this day. Memorial to Goodwife (or Goody) Eunice Cole, the only woman in NH to be convicted of witchcraft. She was convicted in 1656 and given a life sentence in a Boston prison, although she was eventually released in 1670-- only to be rearrested on the same charge in 1671. She was judged to be not guilty although the court was clear they still believed she had "familiarity with the devil." She died in 1680 and it is said she was buried with a stake through her heart to prevent her from rising from the grave to continue her supposed evildoing. Despite this, many Hampton residents have reported seeing her ghost over the centuries. Goody Eunice Cole. Memorialized accused witch and only ever accused witch in the state of New Hampshire. Eunice was a woman to remember. Sharp tongued and brutal, she was ahead of her time to say the least. Her unusual behaviors made her unfavorable by the Puritan towns people of Hamilton, NH. She was accused of witchcraft three times, whipped in public, in prisoned and released over and over again throughout her life. She died in 1680 at the age of 80. She was hated and feared so much by the people of Hampton that upon her death they staked her body and hung a horseshoe at the end of the stake out of fear of possession or her returning in the afterlife. Goody Cole was not a likeable woman, but she was treated terribly just because of the distane of her neighbors who tried everything in their power to get rid of her, ultimately ripping her of her livelihood. But she did not go down without a fight. Over and over again she survived every punishment given to her. Day 4 - Goody Cole #jlausfolklore Cole was formally accused of witchcraft three times in her life, the first in Boston in 1656 when several townspeople testified against her. She was imprisoned until 1660, but was released until 1662 when she was returned to prison until sometime between 1668 and 1671. She was eventually acquitted, despite the "just ground of vehement suspicion" of her guilt. She was accused again in 1673, but acquitted, and once again in 1680, and although she was not indicted, she was still kept in prison. Upon her death in 1680, she was hastily buried in an unmarked grave in Hampton; its precise whereabouts are unknown, although it is believed to be near the site of today's Tuck Museum. Local legends suggest that a stake was driven into her body after her death "in order to exorcise the baleful influence she was supposed to have possessed," and a horseshoe hung on the stake, just to be on the safe side. Goody Cole was almost certainly unpleasant in the extreme - Hampton historian Joseph Dow referred to her as "ill-natured and ugly, artful and aggravating, malicious and revengeful" - but certainly not a witch. Goody Cole, the only women ever accused of witchcraft in New Hampshire, is telling you what she thinks about it from beyond the grave. She was already old when she was accused for the first time. She survived jail in spite of that, only to be accused again later by some local big wheels her presence disturbed. She survived jail again and died of old age in poverty. She apparently had a bad temper. She also may have been ugly. And she was a women. At the era she lived in, it was enough to become the scapegoat of an entire community. 🕯 Day 4: Goody Cole ⚔️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Poor old Goody Cole was accused of witchcraft in New Hampshire 3 seperate times, the only one accused in her state’s history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her land was seized by the town, since people accused of witchcraft could not own land, and she remained in jail for several years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Once released, she had to resort to begging, looking for food wherever she could and eventually passed away completely alone in a small hut where she resided. The residents who found her body dug a shallow grave nearby, and drove a stake through her heart in fear that the evil that resided within her would return. Today’s #jlausfolklore #inktoberalternative #drawing (day 4) is of the only woman in New Hampshire convicted of #witchcraft, #goodycole Eunice ‘Goody’ Cole was a cantankerous, foul mouthed, unpleasant woman who lived in the mid to late 1600s in Hampton, New Hampshire. Her refusal to fit in with what puritanical society saw fit for an old woman to behave like led her to be labeled as a witch multiple times. After multiple trials, the colony of New Hampshire finally convicted her of witchcraft and sent her to prison in Boston in her old age. She remained in prison for 9 years (1656-1665), was denied release when her husband died 6 years in, and after being released in 1665 (on the grounds that she return to Hampton), had to remain in prison in poor health until she was well enough to leave in 1670. She had lost her house when her husband died, so the Hampton government basically set up a shack at the edge of the wilderness for her to live in and forced her neighbors to provide her with food, wood, and clothing. The neighbors agreed to do so, thinking a woman of her age and ‘fragility’ would die soon anyways. She did not. One year later the neighbors raised accusations of witchcraft against her again and she was sent to prison in Salisbury. Two years later, in 1773, the courts basically said ‘listen, we’ve been over your case the last two years, and while we don’t have evidence to prove you guilty of this, we are extremely suspicious that you are dancin’ with the devil, girl’. They then sent her back to her shack, without giving the grounds that her neighbors were to care of her. She lived out the remainder of her days foraging for nuts and berries and just...surviving basically. After several days of not seeing smoke from her chimney and seeing her miss her daily route, a group of men from the surrounding households elected the bravest of them to enter her shack, where he found her lifeless body. They then dug a shallow grave for her body in front of her shack, drove a stake through her heart in hopes of stopping her from coming back to haunt, and buried her. ‘Merica. 🩸𝕱𝖔𝖑𝖐𝖑𝖔𝖗𝖊 𝕯𝖆𝖞 𝟜 “𝕲𝖔𝖔𝖉𝖞 𝕮𝖔𝖑𝖊”🩸 Eunice “Goody” Cole was tried for witchcraft in 1656 and again in 1673 in New Hampshire. She was the only woman in New Hampshire to be sentenced for witchcraft. Sentenced for life, she petitioned to take care of her aging husband and was released. In 1671 the town selectmen ordered the inhabitants to take turns supporting Goody Cole one week at a time. In 1671 she was again arraigned on charges of witchcraft but in 1673 she was found not guilty. Once she was released she was left to live alone & depended on neighbors to help feed her. Overtime no one cared and she was left to scrounge for her own food. No one wanted to help her because she was considered a witch. Her lifeless body was found in a corner of her shack, lying on a pile of salt-marsh hay that had served her as her bed while she was alive. Men found her & dug a shallow grave close to her shack, buried her, then drove a wooden stake through her heart to prevent her from returning to haunt them. It is possible that the stake missed its mark, for a weird series of events has taken place during the past 300 years, most of them, according to tradition, directly attributable to the malevolence of Goody Cole. Her spirit is said to still be roaming and seen until this day. *~Goody Cole ~* #folktober day 4 ☠️ * Ok, so I love to depict strong and powerful witches at the best of times - you can see that in my pieces from #inktober2019 💛 But I was more drawn to just how many women were persecuted, tortured and killed because they were suspected of witchcraft. It still happens today, and I wanted to evoke some of that in my piece for Goody Cole ⭐ * Goody Cole, or rather Eunice Cole, was the only woman to be convicted of witchcraft in New Hampshire. She was accused three times, and some legends say a stake was driven through her heart to rid them of the malevolent evil that possessed her. This week marks 81 years since the organization known as, “The Society in Hampton for the Apprehension of Those Falsely Accusing Eunice “Goody” Cole of Having Familiarity with the Devil” was formed. Eunice “Goody” Cole was the only woman in N.H. ever convicted of witchcraft. The town wanted to make amends to clear her reputation, 300 years after the fact. These two historical signs hang proudly in my dining room.
