💚 Welcome to Blue Earth, Minnesota, home of the Jolly Green Giant statue! . This massive statue was installed in 1979, as a response to a local radio station owner working to bring in travelers to Blue Earth from the newly-built interstate 90, which bypassed the town. While the Green Giant company gave their approval, they gave no money, so the town's businesses completely paid for the statue. . The statue is 55.5 feet tall, and has size 78 shoes! Although the imperial city was remarkable, for us it was not the most captivating part of Hue. But then again, the off-the-beaten path quirky discoveries usually get our vote any day…. In this case, it was Hồ Thuỷ Tiên about 10 km on the fringe of Hue. This deserted water park appears to be post-apocalyptic wreckage which is being succumbed to natural elements in a beautifully rhapsodic way. By the looks of it, one might think this dilapidation has been advancing for 20-30 years, but in fact it’s only been around a decade…. It was opened to the public in 2004 at a price tag of ~$3 million USD when it was only partially completed and bankrolled by Company Hue Tourism, according to Atlas Obscura. It features a crumbling giant three story dragon aquarium, which at one time had crocodiles that got released in the park after its 2013 demise. Fortunately, they’re gone and you can now wander freely through the park without fear of being eaten. Flowing from the Kooteneys and BC's Arrow Lake, the Columbia River irrigates half of Washington, Portland and sheds in Astoria. 154 years ago, an earthquake broke adjacent Ribbon Cliff into the water and damned the flow of the entire river. Old Cleveland Aquarium Cleveland, Ohio Once home to more than 50 displays of freshwater fish. FOR 40 YEARS, CLEVELAND’S EAST side was home to the Cleveland Aquarium. In the mid-1950s, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History donated an old building in Gordon Park to the Cleveland Aquarium Society to display aquatic life. Its doors officially opened in 1954. Originally offering 50 displays of freshwater fish, several of the exhibits tripled by 1967 thanks to grant funding. By the 1970s, a financial deficit would make the aquarium’s future unknown. The city voted to increase admission costs but that wouldn’t be enough to save the facility. By 1985, structural problems and not enough money coming in to cover operating costs caused the Cleveland Aquarium to close. After that, the building was used by the Cleveland Police Department as a dog training facility until it was officially vacated and left to slowly crumble within itself. -The Devil's gold miners of Kawa Ijen- In the previous years, I had the chance to experience volcanic eruption here in Iceland, even tho I have been amazed by these eruptions, some memories from Indonesia surfaced up so I digged into the drives to gather some photographs taken in 2019 Eastern Java - Indonesia, more precisely on the Kawa Ijen volcano. The Ijen volcano complex is a group of composite volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency of East Java, Indonesia. It is known for its blue fire, acidic crater lake, and labour-intensive sulfur mining. Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen volcano is famous for its blue flames. But to locals, it’s the sulphur within its depths – known as the ‘Devil’s gold’ – that provides its true value. If some of of you here are familiar with the term "dark tourism", Kawa Ijen could be part of these places, that can be interesting to see but reveal a sad reality. At the time I embarked this journey with two girls from chili who were traveling through Indonesia and we rented a car to travel around together. We started hiking with a local guide Brahi (photo n°10) at around 4am. He used to be one of the 200 daily miners that are working on Ijen. These 200 miners, extract 14 tons per day — about 20% of the continuous daily deposit. National geographic brought the volcano into light and within, the rise of Tourism in that area, slowly more and more sulfur workers are switching gears to become guides. Hopefully hoping to live longer while keep sustaining their family. Volcanoes are undeniably powerful systems that have transformed our planet over billions years. Central Park - April 2, 1932 Starting in 1892, Henry Albretsen (pictured above) celebrated his April 2nd birthday with a solo round of chess in Manhattan’s Central Park. Local constables and frequent visitors to the park often stopped by to watch the old weathered man play. However, as the solo chess game tended to last all day, no one ever witnessed a game in its entirety. Jeffrey Lewis, a local constable, often visited Henry during his annual tradition and even offered to challenge him in a chess game. “He was polite but firm. No one was to touch the other pieces,” Constable Lewis told a local reporter. “I honored his wish but inquired further. As plainly as a mother might speak to a child, Henry told me Death sat on the other side of the board. For every win by Henry, Death gave him another year to live. Silly really. But one look into his eyes nearly turned me into a believer.” On the evening of April 2nd, 1935, Henry was discovered dead at his game. The constable who found him noted that, according to the chess board, Henry had lost. And of course, given this is Texas where everything in bigger, it was only appropriate that my sightseeing began with the World's largest cowboy boots 👢 These boots are 35ft tall & apparently can hold 300,000 gallons of beer. Why they used beer as a way of measurement & not water is one of those questions that will haunt me forever 🤣 Just kidding, some Friday humor 😂 Also another fun fact, was that at one point there was even a guy living inside it !! My only suggestion to the authorities at this mall outside which these pair of boots stand is that they make a boot shop close to it, so we can get a pair when visiting it !! ɪᴛ's ᴇᴀᴛɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʟɪᴠᴇ Rumänien 2022. Revisit in der Gegend um Geamana. 2018 war ich das erste Mal hier. Schwer zu ertragen, wie sich dort alles verändert, diese Giftbrühe einfach Jahr für Jahr weiter ansteigt und mehr und mehr Land der noch ansässigen Bauern frisst... und nicht nur Land, sondern auch Häuser und andere Infrastruktur. Wo wir 2018 noch runter zum "See" kamen, war jetzt kein Durchgang mehr, da die Felder immer weiter hoch verlagert werden müssen. Der Platz, wo einst eine kleine Kirche stand, ist schon komplett überspült. In dem Haus links (Bild 1) stand ich 2018 noch drin. Es war verlassen damals. Heute ist es Vergangenheit. Der "See" ist nicht auf natürliche Weise entstanden, vielmehr wurde hier ein Tal und das darin befindliche Örtchen Geamana mit dem Schlamm und Abwasser einer nahegelegenen Kupfermine geflutet... und wird es noch bis zum heutigen Tag - eine der größten Umweltsünden in ganz Europa. Vom Dorf schaut heute nur noch das letzte Stück der Kirchturmspitze aus dem grauen Schlamm. Da der See jährlich um knapp einen Meter ansteigt, wird auch diese irgendwann verschwunden sein. The perfect place for a nature lover or urban explorer. The park is named for Catheryna Brett, who once operated a gristmill on this land along Fishkill Creek. That same creek would eventually help power the Tioronda Hat Works Factory, which first opened in 1879. After a fire broke out early in the morning of January 31, 2017, it was largely destroyed. Kansas Toilet Bowl Plaza aka America’s Most Artistic Giant Toilet 🚽 . Located in the quirky artsy town of Lucas, is a unique and beautiful public bathroom that is a work of art in itself! The outside is shaped like a giant toilet, complete with an unrolled toilet paper sidewalk. The outside, as well as the walls inside, are covered with mosaic murals. I had so much fun visiting Lucas! It definitely appealed to this roadside attraction/quirky-finds loving girl! It’s definitely worth a stop if you’re visiting or driving through Kansas!

The Martyr’s Monument 🤍 📍Old Town Cemetery, Stirling 🏴 Information about this monument, as is written on the cemetery website: ‘’The three figures represent an angel keeping watch over two young girls, one of whom is reading the Bible to the other. The reader is Margaret Wilson, the listener is her younger sister Agnes. Such is the logic of legend that they are known locally as the ‘Mary Martyrs’. The two girls belonged to Wigtonshire, the daughters of Gilbert Wilson, a committed Episcopalian. Despite this, the sisters were followers of the Covenanters, an extreme Presbyterian group strongly opposed to the Anglican reforms of Charles II. Margaret and Agnes, aged 18 and 13 respectively, were arrested for their beliefs and along with Margaret McLauchlan, an elderly neighbour, tried for and found guilty of high treason. All three were sentenced to death by drowning. Agnes’s father was able to buy her freedom but despite a temporary reprieve the others were led to a point below high water mark on the treacherous Solway Firth, tied to stakes, and left to drown in the incoming tide. Margaret McLauchlan, by then in her late 60s, had no resistance to the powerful current and soon succumbed to its force. Filanda di Forno Forno, Italy The crumbling remains of a 19th-century textile factory. THE FILANDA OF FORNO IS a textile factory located in the village of Forno in the Province of Massa-Carrara in Tuscany. It was built at the tail end of the 20th century and began full production in 1891. The complex consisted of three large blocks, next to which there were two residences that once served as housing for factory workers and assistants. The huge machinery that spun cotton worked thanks to the power of the water of the Frigido River, which operated the turbines. At its peak, the spinning mill employed just under a thousand workers. In 1942, during World War II, the spinning mill closed due to a lack of raw materials. German troops looted parts and machinery from the shuttered factory, and planted explosives that heavily damaged the buildings and led to roofs and attics collapsing. After the war, the factory’s turbine was used to produce electricity until 1970, and then it finally fell into a state of neglect. In 2013, an industrial museum opened at the site of the former textile factory. The surviving machinery was exhibited, but in recent years this has closed.
