Oil Terminal Revitalization | Part 1 ⠀ This project is a part of my final qualification work on «Revitalization Revitalization of the territory of the Big Port of St. Petersburg». The study and the general master plan of the territory were done in collaboration with Gleb Agenorov, while the eco-district master plan and the architectural component were done independently. ⠀ The revitalization of the oil terminal in the main port of St. Petersburg includes the creation of an eco-district. The choice of the site was primarily due to the existing green area and the great potential for parks and recreation. In addition, the direct access to the Gulf of Finland and the existing large sedimentation lake make the area a suitable location for research facilities to study and restore the marine biology of the water area. In addition to the above, the choice of the name for this is justified by its symbolic location and shape in relation to the water. The site seems to point towards the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea, symbolizing a new ecological era and the elimination of the port’s ecological footprint.

Dramatic and traumatic. One frosty winter day, my colleague and I decided to visit the tallest lighthouse in Kronstadt. It works in automatic mode. After changing the fairway, no one needs it. For this reason, permanent staff do not maintain the light. The entrance door is welded, but you can get inside the tower through a small window above the entrance. It is located at an altitude of about 4 m. And since the lighthouse is a fairly popular place for not very legal climbing, piles of wooden junk usually lie near the entrance, collected in an improvised staircase. I climbed in first, took the backpacks, followed by a colleague. But because of her awkward movement, the whole pyramid of wood fell apart. Thus, we were deprived of the opportunity to descend safely. But it was a future problem, so we continued climbing to the lantern. We took pictures for about an hour, and it was time to leave the tower. I looked out of the window and found that there was nothing to step on. We'll have to jump. I coped with this task, although not without difficulty (because I was shod in insulated boots). But a colleague could not decide on such a "leap of faith". And I couldn't assemble a ladder out of wooden junk. Therefore, I suggested this option: I lean my hands on the tower, a colleague stands with her feet on my shoulders, and then we just hope for luck. At some point, we heard male voices approaching from the direction of the Marine Plant. We didn't want to be arrested and fined, so we had to act quickly. A colleague climbed out of the window, but then something went wrong, and she landed on my head. Something cracked in my spine, and we slowly sank to the ground. For a while, I just lay there and looked at the sky. Then, overcoming the pain, I crawled away from the forbidden territory. Already on the ice side, I tried to straighten up, and found out that I couldn't even get to my feet without help. * * * Then, there was an injury point, a suspected compression fracture of the spine and a week of walking with a cane. But everything has passed and now only the photos remind of this incident.

In response to the question I am often asked, are lighthouses even needed in the era of satellite navigators, I will give a small sketch from life. One day we went to the Karelian coast of the White Sea in search of old lighthouses. In Soviet times, every coastal settlement was illuminated with navigation signs. With the collapse of the Union, most of them became dilapidated and collapsed. We lived in a small Pomeranian village. It was located in a deep bay, hidden behind numerous rocky islets. Early in the morning we took a boat to a distant lighthouse. In order to get to it, it was necessary to overcome about 100 kilometres. We couldn't get back before dark. And for several hours we wandered in the dark between the faceless dark islands, trying to find a safe fairway. It simply did not appear on the map uploaded to our GPS navigator. And if the bay, as before, was illuminated by navigation signs, then we would not have any difficulties. As an illustration to this story, I will give photos of the tallest reinforced concrete lighthouse in Russia. The total height of the tower from the base to the top of the deflector on the lantern is 56.40 m. The Giant was built in 1915 on the northeast corner of the Eastern Wall of the Military Harbor in Kronstadt. After 2006, due to the commissioning of the dam and the change of the fairway, the Rear Kronstadtsky Lighthouse became unnecessary and was abolished. Now it shines only a weak and almost invisible fixed green light in the direction of Lomonosov. The old tower has significant corrosion damage, deformation and unusable condition of protective coatings, and it needs serious restoration repairs.
