We are so excited to introduce @jilliancrochet, who is exhibiting in our upcoming show Blooming Hallucination: Technology as Nature, which opens this Saturday May 4th! BIO Jillian Crochet is a Bay Area disabled artist working in sculpture, video, and performance to confront grief and disability. Her work questions: What is natural/unnatural? What bodies are included/excluded — important? Her practice seeks to liberate the disabled body from normalized marginalization and oppression. In 2021 she was awarded an Emerging Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council. She was a 2020-21 Artist in Residence at Art Beyond Sight’s Art & Disability program and a 2020-21 Graduate Fellow at Headlands Center for the Arts. She has shown work at the YBCA, Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany, the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, CA, SOMArts, the Mobile Museum of Art, etc. She has presented work at MAD Museum, Stanford, and BAMPFA. She earned her BFA from the University of Alabama in 2007 and an MFA in Fine Arts at California College of the Arts in 2020. STATEMENT Jillian Crochet is a Bay Area interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, video, and performance. Her work uses haptic and embodied aesthetics to challenge the hierarchy of the senses and unpack disability and grief. Using elements found in ‘nature’ mixed with medicalized objects, her practice questions the medical model, desire for control, and the complex ethics of genetics and experimentation. A surreal sense of time and disembodiment shapes her work through repetition and duration. An oscillation of the subject/object relationship reflects and unsettles our understanding of nature. We have some fantastic jewelers who bring their work to the Arts Fest including @bolinestrandjewelry @jedsjewelry @Wesleys.Jewlery as well as Mami Weber’s daughter @watercolorpeople and @towdesign. One of my favorite stories from last year was how two fine metal workers of very different ages and life stages were able to connect at the Arts Fest. @Katie_ElFishawy, a senior at @woodsidepriorypanthers who showed her cast jewelry from her AP art class in the group exhibition, met Boline Strand. In Boline, Katie had the chance to really talk to a master jeweler with decades of experience just at a point when she was thinking about colleges and life paths. I happened to see Katie after the chat (wearing her new Boline Strand pomegranate earrings). She was glowing with excitement. Community is everything. . . . . 36” x 36” x 1.5” ECLIPSED This is an intuitive painting. I start off drawing with charcoal in broad strokes. Then adding color and layers until the painting talks to me and I have responses to my actions. I never know how the painting will end up but just give in to the process. Without the Ladera Community Church, there would be no PV Arts Fest. They generously continue to host us in their lovely, well-equipped space. They were also crucial to the inception of the event. Just when the creative circle was forming, and we were bemoaning the lack of opportunities to show locally, @StelliMunnis and @JeffMunnis, the minister of Ladera Community Church, showed up and offered the space. Then Stelli became an integral part of the organizing body, and both brought their creativity to the Arts Fest displaying their art, photography and writing. Thank you indeed!
