Every once in a while, I'll encounter one of these Cane Toads in the garden. They are an invasive species and quite poisonous. Fortunately, they just sit around like rocks and are not at all aggressive. They are mostly dangerous to dogs who don't leave them alone. They excrete a venom called bufotoxin through the bulbous glands on their shoulders (see them in the photo) that can kill animals that ingest it. They can also sicken humans who handle them. The whole pageantry of Super Bowl Sunday draws out real passion from so many people around the country. It’s definitely alive here in Hawai’i. Hey, all. I just wanted to bring to your attention to an incident involving this design we did years back (pictured). There is another Hawai'i-based brand that very recently came up with something suspiciously similar and are going ahead with the production and sale of their version, despite having reached out to them to express my concern about the glaring similarities and kindly ask if they'd do the right thing by pulling it. I won't name names, as my intentions are not to have a repeat of the huge dust-up and subsequent fallout from the 'Ala Wai Swim Team' debacle. Yikes. So if you saw last night's post (that I have since deleted) or somehow ID the brand in question, I humbly ask that you do not engage with them on our behalf. Although, please know that your willingness to step up for us is *greatly* appreciated and very humbling. My goal here isn't to shame folks or make waves. Instead, I've decided to come at this issue from a more diplomatic angle by offering this graphic on a t-shirt for $15 while supplies last. Hopefully we can flood the market and get ahead of this problem before they release theirs. Massive mahalos 🙏🏽 to @katey_klucking! What started as a tiny ‘let’s fill in the hole in the yard’ ended up with us finding the remnants of a massive mango tree and it’s rotten roots which made the ground beneath soft. We dug some spots so deep, I stood inside and it was over my knee (I realize I’m a midget, but that’s still deep). 23 bags of dirt, a run to Home Depot, and about 5 hours of sweaty work later, the pukas were cleaned, filled, and we lay down grass seed (send prayers please for growth 😆). Have you seen this bug recently? This is a false blister beetle. Recent reports have brought to our attention that currently, there may be an increase in these beetles. The adults are nocturnal, are attracted to lights, and can invade homes through open doors or other openings during the evening. Increases in this beetle population don't usually last very long and tend to fizzle out on their own, hopefully within a couple of weeks. . . These beetles secrete a liquid that can cause blisters. I 💗 Chinatown, but sometimes it feels like hell. Frustration, hope, and fear are what I hear when people talk about what should/can/must be done for our district. One face of it, the passionate small-business owners who take pride in being here, amidst the grit and liveliness of a historic district. Another, an understaffed police department aware that procedures need to change. Yet another, residents of the street, who sleep in the doorways of unoccupied businesses and do odd jobs for nearby businesses to buy food and good graces. Elderly apartment-dwellers afraid to leave their homes for fear of being mugged, or having their dogs eat meth and die. Some of the best art, restaurants and nightlife on island. And then there's the shadows people look away from - the drug dealers, game-room operators, money-launderers, abusive pimps.
