So, back on International Women's Day (which was, like, two months ago, so you can see why no one ever praises me for being punctual...), quite a few people in the comment section criticized Claudia for choosing to post pictures of herself along with her fellow 90s supers to commemorate the day. Some people criticized her for glorifying a shallow profession, while others criticized her for setting a bad example for young women. To be honest, I haven't really thought much about this kind of thing. It seems odd to go after Claudia specifically, when she seemed like the most clean-living and image-conscious of the bunch. Although I get the impression she sometimes views the 90s with rose-tinted glasses, Claudia has repeatedly stated in interviews that she views modeling as a respectable and empowering career choice. I know none of these women were "influencers" in the modern-day sense, but she seemed pretty intent on setting a positive example for young women who wanted to become models themselves. I know I'm going to sound incredibly uncool, but I always thought the "heroin chic" fad was incredibly trashy and unappealing, has aged like a fine milk, and did a lot of damage to the idea of modeling as a classy profession. So I like my models clean and unthreatening...oh well! I've complained in the past about how skinny Claudia became by the end of the 90s (and still struggles with on-and-off), but it seems like it was more due to pressure from the industry, rather than any concerted effort on her part to push an unhealthy image on teenage girls.
