Crecí bajo la convicción que la moda era lo que veía en los shows de #JohnGalliano. Me crié con #Dior, con esa fantasía colorida y multicultural que hoy estaría definitivamente funada por apropiación cultural pero eso era lo que Tim Blanks me mostraba en Fashion File cada mañana de sábado en mi tele y mi casa de Valpo, un lugar muy alejado del glamour de París y de las pasarelas. Creo que todxs los que amamos la moda y la vemos con pasión y profundidad tuvimos más o menos la misma educación: la moda es vida, espectáculo, historia. Galliano y McQueen son los reyes supremos pero ambos pagaron precios muy altos por ello y ambos demostraron que el concepto de artista torturado equivale a un niño herido con muchas falencias y mucha oscuridad. Eso refleja el documental #HighAndLow (2024), que ahora pueden ver por Mubi. No tengo vergüenza en decir que lloré en varias partes, tanto por recordar esa emoción infantil que vuelve al ver shows como el Black de 1994 que lo consagró -y que es el favorito de Anna Wintour, por ejemplo-, así como con los episodios dolorosos que lo trajeron de vuelta con Margiela. High & Low: John Galliano. Kevin MacDonald. 2023. Mubi. Seeing the recent Galliano documentary stirs memories from one of the bleakest periods of my adult life. During the late 2000s, I found great solace and creative inspiration in the seasonal fashion cycle, but a combination of harsh economic realities and 2010 suicide of Alexander McQueen set this fantasy world in disarray. The justifiable dismissal of Galliano, one of the few remaining sui generis figures still producing collections, was a sort of last straw. By 2011, I was barely even glancing at the shows, much less considering how specific sartorial ideas could be integrated into my daily life. This period also aligned with my decision to step away from the legal profession for the sake of my mental health. When Galliano was ousted, I had only secured a seasonal job and had yet to find my footing in the long term care industry. His work was never something I aspired to wear, and his increasingly ostentatious displays of self obsessed vanity were far from my own mindset, but in Galliano there was a sense that any idea in the world could somehow be rendered into a garment. He was producing dozens of collections annually while traveling to far flung areas of the world for inspiration. This was prior to ideas of appropriation, so he could freely repurpose any motif that caught his eye.

This look (model Jessica Stam) inspired my drawing, with the merging of the ethereal fairytale elements with the dark and mysterious. The makeup (by Pat Mcgrath) with her frosty, glitter tears alludes to the frozen Russian-Balkan folklore with offered the foundations for the collection. When confronted with this project I wanted to put a twist on one of @jgalliano most beautiful designs and decided to make a dress entirely out of industrial trash bags taking reference to his 1998 and 2006 spring-summer Christian Dior collections. I started cutting the bags into long strips and pleated them on my sewing machine. I then organized these pleats based on size and then cut 7 paneled shapes from the trash bags and sewed them together. The dress comprised around 135 pleated ruffles, a rosary necklace, a corset, and a veil made from black industrial trash bags, as well as a 25-foot steel-boned crinoline, hip pannier and bum pad made from a $7 thrifted bedsheet. Each ruffled pleat on the dress was created in varying sizes of 3,4,5,6,7, 8, and 10 inches and was hand-sewn to create a beautiful shape reminiscent of the 1998 Maria Luisa gown. The dress was then spray-painted on the bottom edges and rhinestoned to resemble the color scheme of the 2006 Dior collection. I completed the project in about two weeks, and although this was one of the most challenging I have ever done, it was also one of the most rewarding as I made this a tribute to the grandiose legacy of Galliano. I even managed to walk to the runway soundtrack from his 2006 show! This dress also meant so much to me on a personal level, as it allowed me to bring to life a vision I always dreamed of. As a child, coming from a religious upbringing I was constantly ostracized and bullied for being queer and loving fashion, this, however, never stopped me from dreaming of channeling a heightened sense of glamour , similar to the models I would see in magazines wearing Galliano’s designs. Fashion has been the main force that has gotten me to this point in my life and it has helped me continue moving forward despite the many personal obstacles I have faced. Thank you, Mr. Galliano, for inspiring me with your theatrical vision and romantic designs. Making this project was a labor of my respect and grand admiration for you. I will always be a Galliano’s Girl and will continue to aspire for more in honor of the legacy you have left for fashion. Sincerely, Narcissus 💋
