Donohoe's Estate Developers Tim and Dan Murphy recently took part in the Beyond Bitumen Car Trek to raise money for Beyond Blue. The trek commenced in Gundagai and finished off in Goulburn, and as everyone was passing through Boorowa on Monday morning the Donohoe's Estate Team held a morning tea for all participating on the trek! Thank you to everyone who joined us. It was a wonderful morning, a picture perfect day in Boorowa. Gundagai RSL Sub-Branch lost it’s oldest and last WWII veteran member with the passing of Mr Alan Sharp at his home “Ellerslie”, Jugiong. He was attended by his loving family, wife June and children Judy, Peter, Tanya and will join daughter Leanne who passed in 2019. Alan turned 100 on 16 February. Alan joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) on June 3, 1942 and travelled to Scapa Flow to join HMAS Shropshire as a “gunner’s mate” on February 3, 1943. On return to Australia “Shropshire” immediately joined Task Force 74 based at Milne Bay and her campaign against the Japanese began in December 1943 as part of the island hopping strategy employed to regain Dutch New Guinea and surrounding islands. On October 25, 1944 Alan, as a “gunner” saw action against the Japanese fleet of Admiral Nishimura with “Shropshire” engaging in Japanese flagship Yamashiro. As one of many Allied Warships, “Shropshire” was in attendance in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese Surrender Ceremony on September 2, 1945 and from there Alan returned with the ship to Australia, where he was posted to HMAS Lonsdale to end of his naval service on February 13, 1946. Alan married the love of his life, June, in 1948 at San Souci and in 1956, with three children, took up a “Soldier’s Settlement” at Jugiong. With a once off payment of 300 pounds Government payment he worked the property, subsidising his grant with work on neighbouring properties as a “roustabout” and doing fencing until 1995 when he leased the property with the agreement that he continue to live in their family (farm) home “Ellerslie”. Being Corowa born, Alan and his cousin Harvey attended ANZAC Day at Corowa until Harvey passed at which time Alan became a regular at the Jugiong service. Alan was always a supporter of the local community with his family particularly remembering his attendance at the Sunday “Choir Practice” sessions at the old Jugiong Pub where the problems of the world would be solved. Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary fundraising events during 2024 work towards the purchase of a Hover Jack for Boorowa MPS. At a cost of $12,000, a Hover Jack allows patients who have experienced a fall and or fracture, to be lifted with greater safety and comfort.. Homemade country-style cakes, slices, jams, and plants will be on offer at their Mother’s Day Cake Stall on May 10, in Bert’s Barber Shop, Pudman Street, Boorowa. Often this stall sells out before lunch so best to get in early. The stall will open at 9 am. If you would like to contribute to this much-needed piece of hospital equipment but do not need any of the stall items on offer, there will be a Mothe’s Day Gift raffle, with tickets available at our Mother’s Day Cake Stall. Do you have time to fill in your day? Are you looking for something interesting to do, or a good cause to get behind? Have you heard of RDA NSW? If not you, then perhaps you know of someone who might like to volunteer. The organisation needs volunteers of all ages to keep everything running smoothly. Volunteers with the RDA perform a variety of tasks, including horse and non-horse related. These tasks could be leading horses and assisting riders or making cups of tea and coffee. Volunteers could find themselves lending a hand around the grounds at the local RDA centre or assisting riders to prepare for their lesson and helping with activities in lessons. There is always plenty to do at fundraising events and functions. Volunteers don’t need any prior knowledge of horses, they learn on the job, and every talent can be useful to the organisation. It costs upwards of $1,200 to keep a horse per year (unshod). Sponsorship is an excellent way of helping the RDA to do that. All volunteers, coaches and riders are asked to adhere to a Code of Conduct. Every volunteer must hold a current Working with Children Check number (WWCC). On the 6th April, after a day or two of torrential rain the sun came out for the Autumn Garden Tasks Workshop at “Glencara”. The morning commenced with a warm drink and delicious scones. We then got back to basics with tasks to complete in the garden for this season. We focused on weeding, pruning, fertilising and mulching. I had examples of our favourite tools to use for each of these activities along with samples of the different types of mulch that is available locally. I then discussed what is in season now to plant in the veggie garden, the flower garden and as ornamentals in your garden. We had a quick break to refresh then we jumped into how to plant seeds, propogate plants and three methods of how to grow bulbs in pots. The day concluded with a delicious lunch in the shearing shed. Two hundred and seventy Beyond Bitumen drivers arrived in Young recently on a car rally to promote Beyond Blue and to raise funds for mental health. Lions Clubs of Gundagai, Echuca, Griffith and West Wyalong, Rotary Clubs of Corowa and Tocumwal and Tocomwal Men’s Shed showed off their culinary skills by cooking meals for the participants. Their stopover in Young was an overnight stay. They were sustained by an early morning breakfast cooked to perfection by the Lions Club of Young Inc. The rally continued to Boorowa for morning tea and then to Goulburn where the rally dispersed. This is a well-organised charity event and a great opportunity to get onto some dirt roads and have some fun. The rally drivers came from many different regions. Ingredients: • 150g (1 cup) plain flour • 220g (1 cup) sugar • 100g (1 cup) rolled oats • 90g (1 cup) desiccated coconut • 125g butter • 1 tablespoon golden syrup • 2 tablespoons boiling water • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda Method: Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C and lightly grease two baking trays. Combine the flour in a bowl with the sugar, rolled oats and coconut. Melt the butter in a saucepan with the golden syrup over medium heat. Combine the boiling water with the bicarbonate of soda and stir to dissolve. Add to the butter mixture and mix well, then stir into the dry ingredients until thoroughly combined. Drop teaspoons of the mixture onto the trays, allowing room for spreading. Bake for 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Rules are everywhere. They ‘rule’ our lives. They are the fundamental principles that govern and organise every aspect of human life – ensuring continuity of the species. Rules help hold complex societies together in the face of competing interests and opinions. This past week we have seen the tragic consequences of fundamental societal rules being disregarded by members of Australian society. On a global platform, we are witness, every day, to the chaos that results from ignoring international rules. As a society we develop rules to protect individuals’ rights (including social, economic, environmental) and ensure our safety. These rules, of course, can vary according to the political, cultural and belief systems of a community at any one time. Rules give a sense of order to our lives – which helps us manage more effectively, our responsibilities, tasks, and relationships. Almost everyone who reads this column will belong to some sort of organisation that is governed (ordered) by a set of rules whether it is a constitution, code, policy, or guideline. As Councillors we also have rules to follow - and it is integral to the obligations of each Councillor to be aware of and follow these rules. In thinking about rules, I have also been reflecting on the importance of common courtesy in our everyday life. Courtesy is society’s ‘grease’- keeping the wheels of society moving. It is a way to show respect and acknowledge and affirm the dignity and value of those around us. When we treat others with kindness, patience, and respect, we create a positive environment that adds to the well-being of life in our beautiful Hilltops. We have a great walking path here in Boorowa, which follows along some of the river. We found this rock the other day and it did make us smile! And then look at this beautiful tree changing colour for Autumn. See the red leaves on the low shoots and the rest is still green, with the tree behind turning yellow and the blue sky - and Bess dog was there too.
