On this D Day Anniversary, I wanted to share a photo of this soldier. There is no name or information on the back of the photo, just a studio name - Parisian Studios, 27 Church Street, Liverpool. From what I can see, this studio was located in Liverpool, England. According to the Australian War Memorial’s site, this soldier’s uniform is from the First World War. He has a rising sun collar badge indicating he was an ANZAC. The cloth colour patches on the his arm would have indicated which unit he was in. If only we could see them in colour! We also can’t see whether he had any stripes etc.on the arms of his uniform. I wonder who this young soldier was, what he saw and what happened to him. Celebrating VE Day -1945 On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany’s surrender the day before. The relief across the country led to exuberant & spontaneous celebrations. For my mother (Marguerita ) she would have been so, so relieved - her husband had been away for 6 hard years and she had been forced to cope as a single mother on meagre rations. It would be another 9 months before Matthew could be demobbed back from Germany where his unit had been. What an experience to (e-)cycle through Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula in the company of Australians and a Turkish historian/guide shortly after Anzac Day (when Australia and New Zealand honor those who fought and died in war). With brilliant blue skies above overlooking equally blue waters, it’s hard to imagine the blood spilled in a nine-month campaign during World War I. Until, that is, you see the trenches and visit several of the 37 cemeteries and monuments commemorating the fallen—mostly young men—from both the British Empire and France as well as the Ottoman defenders. Today a large part of the peninsula is a peace park. The bloody campaign was a strategic debacle for the Allies and a costly victory for the Ottoman Empire, allied with Germany. Nevertheless, it led to the emergence of a national hero for the Turks (in Ataturk) and led to a national awakening for Australians and New Zealanders. Two quotes stood out from the many informative plaques I read: “A good army of 50,000 men and sea power—that is the end of the Turkish menace.” —Winston Churchill (then a British minister who helped orchestrate the disastrous Dardanelles naval campaign and was involved in the planning of the military landings on Gallipoli which incurred heavy losses) “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.” —attributed to Ataturk, though there is some doubt among historians that he wrote it. Our ANZAC Day 2024 was very successful commencing with our Dawn Service which saw a very large crowd once again in attendance. Each year we connect with more of our local schools, scouts, sporting and community organisations and it is very pleasing that we can continue to grow knowledge of our most important commemorative day each year. Our thanks once again to: - all of our wonderful volunteers who assisted setting up the hall prior to the event and setting up at the Cenotaph and then moving chairs etc back to the club after the event; - Ray White Oakleigh for the notice board at the front of the club; - Steve Dimopoulos for the postcards - and the many who ensured they were placed in letterboxes in our community; - The Rotary Club of Oakleigh Clayton Huntingdale for their donation to support the community breakfast; - to Dragana for her preparation of the breakfast - 350 members of our community served for breakfast. And the fantastic team from Bunnings Oakleigh who served the breakfast; - Monash Council for assisting with traffic management, and for ensuring the Cenotaph looked spectacular on that morning; - our Last Post and Reveille player, Zoe Keefe Oakleigh Brass, and Scott Turner our Piper; - our local Police for ensuring all went well on the morning. I had the honor to dive with the great man @ikasdemir thanks to whom the Gallipoli Historical Underwater Park is open to all divers of the world after so many decades... İsmail Kaşdemir is the Chairman of the Director of the Çanakale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site. The remains of dozens of British, French, Australian, and Turkish ships from the First World War are commemorated in an underwater park off the Gallipoli Peninsula. What comes into mind when the word Canakkale is mentioned would be the epic fight that took place on the land in the Gallipoli Peninsula during World War I. Besides, although one of the most important marine events of World War I took place in Canakkale, it is known by very few people. Most of the people have no access to these war monuments, which froze at the moment of unabated fight and now are underwater cultural heritage located at the different depths of the sea. With both their histories and survival today with their last moment during the Battles of Gallipoli, as well as their technology and human-based stories, the shipwrecks take all those who dived to 109 years ago, that's the most fierce moment of the battle at 21 different points of diving including many wrecks of battleship and two natural reefs.
