The Photographer’s Portrait, self-portrait (Hollywood Nightmares series, 2022). I took this photo on Sunday, even though I was supposed to be done with this photo project. I wanted to do something inspired by Ida Lupino’s look in “Road House” (Jean Negulesco, 1948) for a while but didn’t know what to add to the series. The previous and final picture was taken three months ago on the beach and involved setting a print on fire, as in a ritual, in order for me to close this dark chapter. Yet I felt compelled to produce just one more picture, and decided a few days ago that it would be a sort of “portrait of the photographer”. Something happened earlier this year: my camera died. During a shoot with a client. It was mortifying - and felt very symbolic of course. I had bought this camera 10 years ago with @fleur.breteau 🌸 We wanted to make a documentary and I ended up using the camera to shoot my first feature film, as well as many videos and hundreds of thousands of photos. I used it almost every day for a decade. So on Sunday I dragged myself to the studio (løl), and reached for the bloody deceased camera one last time, d’entre les morts and all that. Swipe for a little clip from “Road House”. You can see it for free on YouTube, like hundreds of film noirs and dramas from the 40s and 50s, including the B ones where the girls are really nasty and the men can’t act. I love them all! I liked having Ida Lupino on my mind while finishing this series. Not only was she a fantastic actress, she was the first female director in Hollywood. She wrote scripts, and produced too. Self-portrait, Hollywood Nightmares series, London 2021. * This is one of the only pictures from the series that doesn’t represent an actor. I wanted to show a fan, I’ve always been interested in them. I was a fan when I was a kid and teenager, of singers, of directors. I had posters all over my walls, I collected things. A beloved movie or song came with its kit of by-products and mysteries. A market of obsessions. It’s also one of the very few pictures that doesn’t display anything gross nor horrific. The idea was to convey some sort of quiet madness, a sense that something was wrong. The vase maybe, the loose kimono. The pictures on the wall all come from various sources: the original print of Diana Wynyard by Angus McBean hangs next to some pics printed from the internet, real autographs of Anton Walbrook and portraits of friends taken by me 15 years ago. A hidden confusion, an inner chaos, silenced. Self-portrait, Hollywood Nightmares series (2021). * Smiling or not smiling - isn’t it always the question, in portrait photography? I always wonder why people want or need to smile on pictures, why does one almost automatically do it as if someone asked it - does the smile represent our true self? Is it politeness? Who does one need to reassure? I have never properly been able to smile candidly on a photo, I don’t exactly know why. It almost feels like being asked to be part of a campaign I don’t really get or with a dodgy contract. * This one is inspired by ‘behind the scenes’ pictures one would find in movie magazines like Photoplay or Picturegoer. While exploring the idea of the lies and horrors hiding behind the silver screen (guess what: it’s still relevant today), I have been experimenting with FX makeup recently, thanks to some wonderful youtubers who taught me this « Chelsea smile ».
