Continuing my trend of displaying my inspirations; here we have my current special interest, #hellboy. Hellboy started as a comic book character created by #mikemignola who eventually got his own series. Published by #darkhorsecomics, Hellboy has spawned multiple storylines and spinoffs throughout its time. The Seed of Destruction storyline was eventually adapted into 2004’s Hellboy, directed by #guillermodeltoro and starring #ronperlman as the titular character. It took its own creative liberties with the storyline and characters. The movie was followed up with an animated prequel, #hellboyswordofstorms. In 2008, #hellboyiithegoldenarmy released, with del Torro and Mignola collaborating to make an original Hellboy story for the film. Another animated prequel #hellboybloodandiron was released afterwards. A third film was planned but never made it as Hellboy II didn’t perform well in the box office and #revolutionstudios didn’t want to make another one. Years later, #lionsgate acquired the film rights and made #hellboy2019 directed by #neilmarshal and starring #davidharbour as the titular character. The movie didn’t perform well on most fronts, ruining any idea of a sequel. Now a new movie is in the works, an adaptation of #hellboythecrookedman. I love most of these films. The del Torro duology is action packed, comedic and emotional. Ron does great as Hellboy, and every actor does incredible in their roles. The second movie showed off the creative might of del Torro and Mignola together, coupled with a great composition by #dannyelfman, with the first film’s soundtrack by #marcobeltrami. The animated films were good, Blood and Iron being my favorites. 2019 had some great creature and set designs, making them feel like they were ripped from the comics, but it was lacking in some parts, mostly with the way its story was conveyed. The soundtrack wasn’t my favorite but it’s fitting for the film. If you haven’t gotten into Hellboy or seen any of the og films, I highly recommend them.

The Nun II - 4K I’m a bit on a Horror-spree here. But next to Sci-Fi and Fantasy it’s definitely a favorite genre of mine. As I previously mentioned this week, The Conjuring Universe, with all its spin-offs, proofs to be one of the most effective collection of supernatural horror movies ever for me. And contrary to popular opinion, I think “The Nun” is the best one from that collection. So the sequel was a blind buy for me! And it did not disappoint. The casting of sister Debra turned out to be a surprising and positive addition to the movie. The change of scenery is nice although I must admit that I missed the traditional set design from the first movie. But Taissa Farma is a godsend, carrying the whole movie on her frail shoulders. In my opinion the first “The Nun” is better, but this was a close second. I don’t know what happened here, but the super deep blacks from “The Nun” 4K UHD have been replaced by an embarrassing grayish look, with the aspect ratio almost announcing itself like it wants to say: “See? These are my frame borders!” How this could have been approved is beyond me. It’s probably never going to happen but this should be re-authored. Yes, details within shadows are well defined but there is no balance so the deep blacks that HDR10 is so well known for have clearly been sacrificed. The Dolby Atmos track is a real winner, driving the gut punching scares home with significant impact. The scarce bonus features are nice to have but nothing more than predictable EPK drizzle. With the sequel just a tad less impressive than the original, it’s the disc’s technical faults that lets the movie down significantly. “The Omen” (2006) is a supernatural horror directed by John Moore starring Liev Schreiber, Julia Stiles, Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick & Mia Farrow. Of course, with every horror franchise comes a shitty remake and that’s exactly what this is. It pretty much copies the entirety of the original but not in an effective or memorable way. The scares are just bad, the effects are just bad and the script is just bad. A lot of the dialogue is ripped straight from the original and it’s just lazy really. The performances were just so dull and had no emotional range to them at all. Schreiber was so robotic, he showed no emotion during his performance and failed to carry the film in any way. The film just felt so rushed too, the original was able to have a short run time but not go to quickly to make itself this mess, this remake was unable to do such thing and was just all over the place, it actually got frustrating how rushed it was sometimes. The music is pretty good with a score inspired the iconic original, Beltrami did a great job with the music. Overall, unfortunately this was just a lazy, rushed mess of a remake that i can now see why was so forgotten. A mixed bag of a franchise with two solid first films, two very weak sequels and a very weak remake. ‘Dracula 2000’ (2000) was a flop at the box office but was up against stiff completion upon release. Well dramatised for its reshoots & fast paced production, the score was composed & produced by Marco Beltrami @marcobeltrami.music & is undoubtedly the best asset the film has to offer apart from the stellar cast. Just finished watching A Quiet Place Part II. This is one of those rare times where the sequel outdoes the original, in my opinion. First and foremost, I loved the addition of Cillian Murphy to this film. He gave an incredible performance and really showed his acting chops in this movie. I think the main returning characters all did great too and really built on their performances from the previous film. As for the story, they did a great job of throwing in some backstory to answer some questions from one. I also enjoyed the overall plot, as well as the pacing, as it pushed the greater story forward. This film did well with how it utilized sound again and had more intense scenes throughout. Lastly, Marco Beltrami really created a great score for these films. I have a minor nitpick with the under-utilization of Djimon Hounsou. He’s a really solid actor that should’ve been used more in this story. Needless to say, I love this film. I’m gonna give this movie a 9.5/10. Blade II - Blu-ray Blade 2 (Blade II) est un film américano-allemand réalisé par Guillermo Del Toro, sorti en 2002. Second volet de la franchise Blade, il fait suite au premier film de Stephen Norrington, sorti en 1998. Malgré des critiques mitigées (comme son prédécesseur), il connaît le succès commercial et dépasse les recettes du premier film. Le tournage s'est déroulé entre les Studios Barrandov de Prague, Londres, New York et Toronto. Prague a notamment été choisie, en dehors de l'attrait financier et pour l'aspect “technico-gothique” que souhaitait Guillermo del Toro. Les actions spécifiques du film ont nécessité la création d'une caméra pouvant suivre les acrobaties des acteurs et cascadeurs. La L-cam a donc été mise au point par l'équipe des effets visuels. Guillermo del Toro explique qu'elle pouvait suivre « un plan de Wesley Snipes qui court le long d'un corridor quatre étages au-dessus du sol, puis il fait un saut de 60 mètres et la caméra suit la balle qu'il tire à 20 mètres de lui ». Blade 2 est le film le plus lucratif de la trilogie, récoltant 80 millions de dollars aux États-Unis et 150 millions dans le monde. MESRINE PART 2: PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1 (2008) Longer and pretty much as good as the first part with understandable pros and cons. Personally, I think an expected finale feels a bit too rushed but it's really nice being able to enjoy less of abrupt romance and more of cop-vs-criminal stuff here. The score by Marco Beltrami and Marcus Trumpp, no Eloi Painchaud this time, properly proceeds all the original materials to a satisfying conclusion. Like it or not, you will get to experience more of both Goldsmith and Zimmer's styles during action scenes but at least they sound very organic. Then due to the nature of the film, more emotional or even melodramatic variations of the main theme is definitely something to be expected and the composers just nail them in my opinion; and in a way that I can forgive some rushed moments too. Taking everything into account, let's say you aren't going to hear new big themes but that's quite valid in this case and the music development is still there to appreciate, enjoy and remember. MESRINE PART 1: KILLER INSTINCT (2008) A bit disjointed as if they were so many things to tell but still an effectively emotional biopic of a famous French criminal. I mean, the man wasn't a good guy but this first part just delivers enough character study to not forget and also to praise the cast. Marco Beltrami & Eloi Painchaud's mostly orchestral score isn't less of an effective music for crime-drama genre with both old-fashioned and modern scoring techniques. It's appropriately bleak yet melodic, emotional and very thematic regarding a two-phrase main theme for the story that dominates or comes with several variations; though it could be ironic for Beltrami's fans to find out that a half of this not-so-heroic theme is later adapted into heroic themes for FANTASTIC FOUR (2015) and BEN-HUR (2016). In addition, I really enjoy how parts of frantic action music including one for prison break scene feel like homage to Jerry Goldsmith's style.
