Une semaine à Ithaque, sur les traces d'Ulysse ! (English below) Quel plaisir et quelle chance d'avoir pu passer du temps sur la petite île d'Ithaque ! 1 semaine seulement car pas de camping ou de facilités pour les van là-bas : 1 semaine en autonomie. On s'est sentis privilégiés car pour venir ici, pas si simple : l'île est encore assez "secrète", les logements semblent excessivement chers. On sent que c'est un coin de paradis que les grecs et les habitués étrangers ne veulent pas (trop trop) partager ! Côté Ulysse (ou Odysseas de son vrai nom) il ne reste pas grand choses : de potentielles ruines de son modeste "palais", quelques lieux qui feraient écho à son épopée. Bref, rien de très concret. Mais finalement, on n'est pas venus pour ça. Plutôt pour les coins reculés, abrités, les criques, l'ambiance un peu bobo-chic parfois. En van ou en bateau, Ithaque vaut 1000 fois le coup ! Nos souvenirs : observer les bateaux et charters essayer de rentrer dans les places du port de Kioni, avec les 3 jeunes Tic/Tac/Toc à la manoeuvre VHF ! Squatter au café bohème des après midi entiers pour bosser et surtout trouver des logements pour les mois suivants #grosboulot, le baklava dégoulinant de sucre, les méduses invisibles de la crique, les vieux français qui veulent pas partager leurs tips sur l'île ^^, la source d'eau fraiche pour se raser les jambes, Babis et le chat, le vieux monsieur qui fait du cirque aquatique avec son chien... ----------------------- A week in Ithaca, in the footsteps of Ulysses! What a pleasure and what luck to have been able to spend time on the small island of Ithaca! 1 week only because no camping or van facilities there: 1 week in autonomy. We felt privileged because to come here, not so simple: the island is still quite "secret", the accommodation seems excessively expensive. We feel that it is a corner of paradise that Greeks and foreign regulars do not want to share (too much)! On the Ulysses side (or Odysseas of his real name) there is not much left: potential ruins of his modest "palace", a few places that would echo his epic. In short, nothing very concrete. But in the end, we didn't come for that !

Sunset in Ithaca is an intense experience wherever you are. The sun sets behind Fiscardo of Kefallonia and the whole of the western side of Ithaca is bathed in gold. Sunset from a bench with a view near the Mill of Tzanetos in Lefki, from the high sentry-posts of Ithaca- Exogi, Anogi…. but even from the sea at Ai Giannis with the channel bathed in beams of light that pierce the clouds that announce the night that approaches. Last night on @sbs_australia was the final episode of Greek Island Odyssey with Bettany Hughes where Bettany concluded her voyage on the legendary island of Ithaca. Not only is Ithaca the birthplace of the greatest, mythical Greek hero, Odysseus, but also the birthplace of my mother, so it stirred up some strong emotions. Throughout my childhood, my mother would regale my sister and I with stories of Odysseus’ cunning ways as he overcame every obstacle in his path while trying to reach his final destination, Ithaca, and be reunited with Penelope, his wife, and son. Even as an adult, I never get tired of these stories. Ithaca, the island, is not only a place of legends, it is also one of Greece’s most beautiful. Located in the Ionian Sea, it flies very much under the radar. Not easy to get to, but well worth the effort, Ithaca’s 50 shades of blue beaches, verdant green landscape, charming villages, breathtaking views and Venetian architectural buildings will have you entranced. Ithaca is iconic and visually stunning but it is so much more than that....it is a metaphor for life. We are beginning to understand why Odysseus journeyed for so long to return to Ithaka. It is a sailor's paradise with stunning turquoise anchorages, elegant groves of cypress and olive, and sheer dramatic cliffs. We've been enjoying anchoring and being a little more off-the-grid, making fancy meals aboard and even learning to sleep when there is a bit of swell. And it's a good thing the water is so clear because we are both a little paranoid about dragging (even though there is barely any wind, yes I know we're crazy) and we dive on the anchor 🤿⚓ at least twice per day to check it 😂 What can I say- we're newbies.
