Once renowned for its sprawling lakeside orange groves that stretched as far as the eye could see, Clermont has now transformed its thriving small town. Our destination? The Salt Shack on the Lake, which some describe as a lakefront oasis. Salt Shack on the Lake has a prime location by Lake Minneola, just a few blocks away from downtown Clermont. This spot offers a blend of island vibes, wild-caught seafood, refreshing drinks, and family-friendly fun—even our four-legged companions are welcome! Let me share some highlights of our visit: - Ambiance: The restaurant features a very spacious indoor seating area, complete with a bar. Additionally, there’s a wide-open porch and a shaded picnic table area—all with fantastic waterfront views. With the recent passing of country music icon Toby Keith, memories flood back to a late afternoon in Breman, Ga, on Thursday, August 23rd, 2012, when I had the privilege to interview him. The occasion was the grand opening of the “Mill Town Music Hall,” paying tribute to country music producer Harold Shedd, a local boy turned Nashville legend. Harold’s list of accolades includes producing albums for icons like Mel Tillis, Glen Campbell, and Reba McEntire, as well as discovering talents such as The Kentucky Headhunters, Shania Twain, Billy Ray Cyrus, Kathy Mattea and the now late Toby Keith. As the host of the Red Carpet event preceding the show, I had the pleasure of chatting with various performers and celebrity guests, including Country Music Legend Mel Tillis, Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry both of Alabama, former NFL Coach Barry Switzer, Native Georgians John Berry and Doug Stone were all a part of the celebration. The highlight of the evening was Toby Keith’s surprise appearance, despite his status as a chart-topping superstar. Little did the crowd know, Toby had been quietly parked behind the venue in his tour bus for several days leading up to the event. Despite his busy schedule, Toby graciously stopped for a few moments of conversation on the Red Carpet, demonstrating his respect for Harold Shedd and the occasion. During his electrifying performance later that night, featuring his first hit “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and the anthem “Red Solo Cup.” Toby paid homage to Harold with heartfelt words, showcasing the depth of their bond. It was a moment of genuine tribute and admiration, highlighting Toby’s humility and appreciation for the man who helped shape his career. Toby mentioned he would have walked all the way from Nashville, just to be there to honor the man who made his dreams possible. I figure even without that comment Toby Keith showed his class and admiration of Harold Shedd by living 2 days on his tour bus behind the venue with little to no fanfare. We had the pleasure of attending the SOLD OUT Dog Day event at Southern Hill Farms this evening, accompanied by our dog, Cambrie, from 5 PM to 7 PM! It marked the inaugural Dog Day at the farm, offering an opportunity for Cambrie to join us for a sunset visit. Tickets granted admission to the sunflower field, along with a u-pick sunflower, a bandana, and a special treat for our four-legged companions. This exclusive event was the only time pets were welcomed onto the farm, making it a truly memorable experience. Nestled on their expansive 120-acre family-owned and operated farm, Southern Hill Farms boasts a variety of seasonal crops, including blueberries, strawberries, peaches, and seasonal vegetables. Today, we had the pleasure of interviewing John Sather, a skilled home brewer renowned for crafting award-winning micro beers and mead in his garage. Mead, an unfamiliar beverage to our crew, intrigued us with its unique qualities. During the interview, our producer Dan expressed his curiosity about mead, sharing that he’s always wanted to try it, especially since it’s prominently featured in the TV series Game of Thrones. For those unfamiliar with mead, also known as hydromel when low in alcohol content, it is an alcoholic drink produced by fermenting honey blended with water, occasionally incorporating ingredients like fruits, spices, grains, or hops. Typically served in small quantities, a shot glass of mead goes a long way. Mead can be enjoyed still, carbonated, or naturally sparkling, offering a spectrum of tastes from dry to semi-sweet or sweet. None of our crew members had experienced mead before, but John’s expertise and his winning recipe opened our eyes to the beverage’s allure. After wrapping up the video shoot, John generously shared bottles of his Charlie Bee mead with each of us. With over 20 years of brewing experience, John consistently excels in creating craft beer and mead right in his garage. Last night’s energy was fueled by a combination of Fried Chicken, Oatmeal Pies, and Pabst Blue Ribbon! The highlight of the evening was catching one of my favorite bands, Southern Culture On The Skids, at Will’s Pub. This show is an annual must-see for me, as the band typically tours Florida every mid-January, covering cities from Jacksonville to Tampa and points in between. Hailing from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Southern Culture on the Skids, or SCOTS, is a rock band with a rowdy musical style that blends country, garage rock, surf, rockabilly, and soul. Their repertoire includes a fusion of blues, psychobilly, and rock and roll, featuring mostly original songs alongside blistering cover versions of Classic Rock, Classic Country, and even a Slim Whitman song or two. I had the pleasure of meeting Rick Miller, Dave Hartman, and Ms. Mary Huff several years ago during an interview for a blog. My introduction to SCOTS came in the ‘90s when, working at a rural Georgia radio station, I would dumpster dive for discarded CDs that didn’t fit the station’s music genre. Among my finds was the SCOTS CD “Dirt Track Date,” and that discovery instantly won me over. Their shows are always fast-paced, upbeat, and guarantee you’ll be moving your feet. The Orlando audience is a diverse mix of people from various walks of life, creating an eclectic atmosphere with everyone singing along. Just a word of caution – at their shows, you might find yourself invited on stage for dancing or even have a piece of fried chicken playfully chucked your way.
