My wife saw this photo on my computer screen this morning and said, entirely unprompted, that she liked it. Bloody hell, I thought, it must be good - let’s get it posted! 😜 The bird in the frame is a chat flycatcher, basking in the warm glow of the evening sun. Which is it, you might ask, a chat or a flycatcher? Make your mind up, son. The answer is it’s a flycatcher but it often drops to the ground to hunt for insects, where its relatively large size, plain colouring and general behaviour are all reminiscent of a chat. Simples! “Siblings are like branches of a tree. They grow in different directions, yet their roots remain as one”, that is something I know will stand true for these two babies. Veera has done a splendid job so far raising her first litter. Back in March 2023, when she got them out for the first time, these cubs were barely 2 months old and we knew just then, that they were going to be the raise of Belara. The last 14 months have been nothing short of pure happiness watching them grow, play, irritate their mother and leave us awestruck. I know that they will separate one day, go their own ways and probably forget about home. But for now, they are siblings, they take care of each, groom each other as the day raises and night falls over their parent’s kingdom. On this afternoon, much like all the other afternoons on a summer safari was hot and dry. J'entends encore les trompettes glorieuses des césars oubliés, Domitien, Aurélien, Septime et les Sévères, engloutis eux aussi. Leur gloire s'évanouit, emportée par les notes, macabres des Ramses, Thoutmosis, Amenhotep. Rien, de vous ni des suivants, il ne restera rien, ô Alexandre, dans le sillage des Perses, ton empire a fondu. Babylone, Ishtar, Assur, Nippur la grande... Disparues. Les steppes aussi, le fracas sourd des grands Khans, hordes d'or sur Bagdad, Byzance et Ottomans dans le tourbillon de l'oubli. Les tsars exécutés, les rois décapités, l'Inca assassiné. De la puissance et la gloire, il ne reste qu'un rêve, quelques lumières éparses, poussières d'étoiles qui brûlent nos paupières.
