🚴🏼‍♂️ The Human Power Team TU Delft and VU Amsterdam (@hptdelft) has been breaking barriers and records since 2011. Sebastiaan Bowier blazed through the track with VeloX1, hitting 130 km/h and making the European record. The streak continued with VeloX2 reaching 129 km/h in WHPSC 2012. Then, in WHPSC 2013, Bowier took the VeloX3 to new heights, taking the world record with 133.78 km/h. 🚴🏼‍♀️ HPT's prowess wasn't just a flash in the pan: they dominated the women's category too. VeloX4 clinched victory in WHPSC 2014, and in WHPSC 2016 they placed 3rd among universities with a top speed of 124.73km/h. 🥇 VeloX7 nearly kissed the world record at 121.8 km/h, Aniek (115km/h) and Iris (110km/h) in WHPSC 2017. Lieke de Cock by VeloX8 with 119.5 km/h won the world championship of fast cycling in WHPSC 2018. 🌟 But the spotlight moment came during WHPSC 2019, when Rosa Bas rewrote history, setting a new world record at 122.12 km/h by VeloX9.  #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #WHPSC #memories

Pedal Through Time: the IHPVA — originally founded in 1976 as the International Human Powered Vehicle Association — has been at the forefront of promoting the design and development of human-powered vehicles (HPVs). 🕰️ In 1997, the association reorganized, welcoming national organizations as members and adopting the name Human Powered Vehicle Association (HPVA) in the United States. 🇺🇸 However, conflicts over record-keeping and copyrights led to a split in 2004, with the American HPVA breaking away from the IHPVA: in a twist of fate, both organizations retained the same name for a brief period. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏿 In 2009 the IHPVA — unable to regain control of its domain name — transformed into the World Human Powered Vehicle Association (WHPVA). 🌀 Today, the IHPVA is a global community of HPV enthusiasts, fostering innovation, speed records, and the joy of human-powered mobility. 🌟 #WHPSC #WHPSChistory #WorldHumanPoweredVehiclesSpeedChallenge #IHPVA  #IHPVAhistory #InternationalHumanPoweredVehiclesAssociation #HumanPoweredVehicles

The University of Liverpool Velocipede Team (@ulvteam) was established in 2015 by a group of Master’s students passionate about human-powered vehicles. In the same year, they joined the WHPSC with Ken Buckley who set the English record up to 120.74 km/h with Arion 1,  but it is no IHPVA official record. 🚴‍♂️ They returned to Battle Mountain the following years with their bike Airon 2 in the 2016 edition, and then in Arion 3 in 2017. They faced challenges like crashes, bike fixes, and unpredictable weather, but their riders’ Yasmin and Ken showcased impressive speeds, although hindered by non-legal wind conditions. 🏁 WHPSC 2018 marked another milestone, the team welcomed Karen Darke, a Great Britain Paralympic Athlete — gold medal in Rio 2016 — for the road time trial H1-3 category. She set the world record for the fastest female hand-powered bike at 74.91 km/h. Alongside Karen, Ken Talbot was back breaking the human-powered land speed record at 83.02 km/h with Arion 4. 🏆 Also in WHPSC 2019 the women’s trike record was increased to 90.8 km/h by Yasmin Tredell with Arion5 trike from the University of Liverpool. 🏆 #WHPSC2015 #WHPSC2016 #WHPSC2017 #WHPSC2018 #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #WHPSC #memories

Aim93 (@aim93hpv) emerged from a collective vision to push the boundaries of human-powered speed, driven by the inspiration of Todd Reichert's record-setting achievement in 2016. This ambitious endeavor brought together a team of passionate individuals dedicated to synthesizing design, engineering, and human endurance to create the fastest bike in the world. 🚀  Their journey began with the Soup Dragon at WHPSC 2018, where they achieved a top speed of 85 km/h driven by the British Human Power Club rider Russell Bridge. This initial experience into human-powered speed racing provided invaluable insights and propelled Aim93 forward, evolving into a student-led project at London South Bank University in 2019. 🏢 During the second day in Battle Mountain, Aim93's bike crashed during the 5-mile run. They completed adjustments, passed tech inspection, and qualified at 71 km/h for the 2.5-mile run. Aim93 faced strong side winds, resulting illegal. Although they left WHPSC 2019 without a prize, watching the final heats together provided a memorable conclusion for the team. 🚲  Team Aim93 had a rollercoaster experience at WHPSC 2022. Despite encountering challenges such as crashes and weather disruptions, they persevered with determination and innovation. Noah's impressive speeds up to 103 km/h and the team's collaborative efforts showcased their resilience and commitment to pushing the boundaries of human-powered speed. 🏁  #WHPSC2022 #WHPSC2019 #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #WHPSC #memories

The Human-Powered Vehicle Design Team (@hpvdt), from the University of Toronto, is a dynamic group of students passionate about engineering and human-powered vehicle design. Besides the land competitions, they compete also in the air ones. 🪽 In the WHPSC 2022, the HPVDT team brought their latest prototypes — Cyclone and Titan, driven by Lincoln Macdonald and Bill Kong — trying to record in the solo men’s category and the tandem men’s one. 🚲 Despite numerous challenges, the University of Toronto team succeeded admirably at the event, showcasing their dedication and perseverance despite technical setbacks with their tandem vehicle, Titan. They secured third place in the collegiate category, highlighting their resilience and achievement. 🏆 During the distribution of miles hats in the award ceremony, Lincoln received the 60 mph one. Calvin Moes and Bill Kong won first place in the men’s multi-rider. 🏆 #WHPSC2022 #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #WHPSC #memories

Another team who has the longest participations in WHPSC is @teampolicumbent, from Torino, Italy. 🇮🇹  Policumbent is celebrating in 2024 its 15th year of existence: the team started designing and building non-faired recumbent bikes to join the Human Powered Vehicles World Championship, and other occasional events in Apeldoorn velodrome and in Italy to beat the hour record. 🎉 The first faired recumbent of this team was Pulse, who joined the WHPVA world championship in Fowlmead (UK) in 2012. 🇬🇧 The team first joined WHPSC in 2015 with PulsaR, reaching 126.90 km/h speed in their second year of participation with Andrea Gallo as only rider. 🇺🇸 In 2022, Policumbent participated to the competition with three prototypes: TaurusX for the female record with Matilde Vitillo and Martina Stirano, Phoenix for the male record with Andrea Gallo, and the newborn Cerberus for the handtrike record with Diego Colombari. The Team arrived first in the collegiate awards with the respective speeds of 119.20 km/h, 110.15 km/h, 129.20 km/h and 66.97 km/h. 🏆 The next year, Policumbent was back with Cerberus, again for the handtrike category, and Phoenix, for both men and women’s categories. Diego Colombari, driving Cerberus, is now the second fastest arm-powered man in the world with 82.80 km/h. Matilde Vitillo upgraded her personal speed to 121.41 km/h, and their newest male rider Enzo Yokota managed to speed up to 112.17 km/h after only two months of learning to ride recumbents. Also this year, Team Policumbent classified first in the collegiate awards. 🏆 #WHPSC2023 #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #WHPSC #memories

One of the traditional funny moments of the WHPSC happens during the awards ceremony, the last evening of the competition’s week: Battle Mountain’s sheriff uses to fine the riders who exceed speed, or had a bad behavior on the street. 👻 For 2023, there’s the fine to maintain lane failure: the winners where Oscar and Enzo, riders’ of Bilby (@monashhumanpower) and Phoenix (@teampolicumbent) 🛣️ Next fine was for failure to stop, and was given to the Sprocket Rockets’, who missed catch in their first run 🚧 The speeding exceed fine was given to Alaistair and Kit from the Monash Human Power team, who ran 2.22 km/h over the limits, and to François (@velo_altair), who exceeded 26 km/h over the limits. 🏎️ #WHPSC2023 #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #WHPSC #memories

One of the teams who have the longest participations in WHPSC is @velo_altair, from Annecy, France 🇫🇷 For Vélo Caréné everything started in 2007 when Philippe Valleix, professor at IUT Annecy, started a students’ team to work on a prototype of a faired bike with the ambition to beat speed records. 🚲 Their peculiarity is that their prototypes are always named Altaïr, with the add of the version number. But while Altaïr 1 joined competitions only in France, it’s from Altaïr 2, in 2009, that Vélo Caréné is participating for the first time in WHPSC. 🇺🇸 But 2023 was the last participation for Vélo Caréné: in this edition of the competition they set their top speed record to 139.98 km/h with François Pervis, who became the fastest men in France and Europe, and the second fastest men of all time. 🏆 #VéloCaréné #WHPSC2023 #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #WHPSC #memories

2023 brought in the World Human Powered Speed Challenge a new university team: @monashhumanpower, from Melbourne, Australia! 🇦🇺 Monash Human Power are designing, manufacturing fully-faired human-powered vehicles since 2015, mostly racing them in the OzHPV Challenge to beat the Australian record.🚲 Their peculiarity is that their riders aren't professionals, but members of the team who trained on the prototype they built themselves from scratch. 🚴🏻‍♂️  In 2023 they entered WHPSC with they prototype Bilby, attempting record with 4 riders: Chris, Oscar, Alastair and Kit. Alastair Haslam and Kit Kirby both broke the Australian men's single track bike record speeding respectively 116.05 km/h and 116.39 km/h. 🏆 #MonashHumanPower #WHPSC2023 #InternationalHumanPoweredVehicleAssociation #IHPVA #HumanPoweredVehicles #WorldHumanPoweredSpeedChallenge #whpscale

Today was our last day racing in Battle Mountain, and whilst going the through motions we’ve gotten used to over the last week, we’ve had the opportunity to reflect a bit on the design, build and test project we’ve undertaken. It’s been a bit of a mammoth task in such a short window of time, and although what we produced wasn’t perfect, it well and truly fulfilled the initial brief and we’re really proud of our achievement. Thank you to @kenstagram86 and @yasmintredell for being exceptional athletes. Massive congratulations on your achievements. We’re sorry that things didn’t go to plan 100% of the time, but we were so impressed with your performance when they did! Can’t wait to see what you do next! We’d like to extend a special thank you to our technical staff, both those who came to battle mountain and those who didn’t. They have committed a huge amount of time and effort to this endeavour and have taught us so much...you’ve managed to turn us into something that could pass for engineers! Huge shout out to Steve and Mike (@mickhead1994). Thanks for allowing us to do the project and pushing to make sure we could finish. We really hope Mike recovers quickly from his sever sleep deprivation after his literal 2 nights of sleep in the last 7 weeks. Thanks for having us IHPVA. We’re all bloody knackered but have learned so much and had the most incredible time. Had a dream 15 months ago to build a really really fast bike. It took every ounce of our team’s time and energy, but over a year later we did it! Our bike “Ambition” just broke the American Collegiate speed record and went 63.6 mph (and may have crashed spectacularly afterwards)!! Stoked to have been a part of such an amazing project. #ihpva #whspc #humanpoweredvehicle

Race Day 6 - W-W-W-WORLD RECORD!!! In true ARION style we’ve really gone and left it until the last minute! At 17:25 this evening, Yasmin ‘The Queen of Speed’ Tredell broke the World Women’s Multitrack Speed Record making her the fastest woman on 3 wheels! Yas did 56.42 mph through the trap smashing the standing record by 2mph. We’re unbelievably thrilled and cannot wait to celebrate! This is a huge win for the ARION team. Today marks the 50th day of manufacture, which is something we should remember to keep this victory in perspective. So unbelievably proud of Yas, Ken and the team for their maintained drive, commitment and enthusiasm to the project. At this point we’d like to extend an enormous thank you to all of our sponsors for making this possible. We hope we’ve made you proud too! #UniversityOfLiverpool #ARION5 #ULVTeamOnTour #Velocipede #WHPSC #IHPVA #Speed #Tygavac #sigmatex #Schwalbe #CPCases #Hobson #RoyceHubs #AintNoSleepForTheWicked #RecordsDontGrowOnTrees #TheyreMadeInTheDesert

Race Day 5 - Battle Mountain Blues Today wasn’t a great day for the ULVT. Problems with screen systems and transmission meant that we had to scratch our runs from the staging area. Not ideal at this stage but at least we didn’t roll! The repairs have been successful.. we’re looking mechanically sound and packing two exceptional athletes. We might just need the planets to align for us tomorrow with some good wind. Hoping Friday the 13th will be a lucky one! Race Day 4 - Assessment and Improvement After a long day and a long night, the team decided that the best course of action was to spend the day prepping ARION5 for the runs ahead (so no artsy photos i’m afraid) while a few of us went off to watch the racing (pictured). The whole system was assessed and a lot of detective work was done to identify what caused yesterdays events. We think we’ve cracked the case (not the shell) and set about making all the improvements we could, which we hope will bring us closer to our world records. Really looking forward to tomorrow’s runs... we’ve never been so excited to wake up at 5am! #UniversityOfLiverpool #ARION5 #ULVTeamOnTour #Velocipede #WHPSC #IHPVA #Speed #DreamTeam #NoSleepTillBM #ReadyToGo #WinnersAreGrinners #AintNoSleepForTheWicked #RecordsDontGrowOnTrees #TheyreMadeInTheDesert

Race Day 3 - Rock n Roll Today has been an absolute whirlwind! Its felt like one of those days that’s gone on forever. It started with Yas breaking her own British multi track female record with a speed of 52.92 mph! Then Ken broke the British multi track male record with a speed of 55.87 mph but unfortunately there was an illegal wind! We’re disappointed that this run wasn’t legal but we’re so impressed with his professionalism and ability to give it the beans! This was followed by two crashes that sent both our riders into the desert. Fortunately everyone’s ok! This shows that the design is up to spec and proves we can keep our riders safe. We’re so close to the world records and we’re only half way through the week. We’re ready to go pedal to the metal (carbon) to make this happen! Team Stats; Average Sleep: 3 hours Motivation: 100 Favourite Food: anything #UniversityOfLiverpool #ARION5 #ULVTeamOnTour #Velocipede #WHPSC #IHPVA #Speed #DreamTeam #NoSleepTillBM #ReadyToGo #WinnersAreGrinners #AintNoSleepForTheWicked #RecordsDontGrowOnTrees #TheyreMadeInTheDesert

9/11/2019, 5:44:21 PM

Race Day 2 - Hard work pays off Yas smashed it down the 2.5 mile run early this morning and put in incredible effort. So much so that she now holds the British women’s multi track land speed record by reaching a top speed of 47.34 mph! Good news is, she said she has plenty more fuel in the tank! Ken also put in a top quality run that showed off his control and growing confidence in the new system. We’re really excited to see what he can do with some more time in the trike. To recap; that’s ARION5’s first record... and it’s only Monday! 😉 #UniversityOfLiverpool #ARION5 #Velocipede #ULVTeamOnTour #WHPSC #IHPVA #Speed #HumanPowered #BrokenRecord #and #RecordBroken #WheelieProud #JustTrikeToCatchUs #MultiTrackMix #AintNoSleepForTheWicked #RecordsDontGrowOnTrees #TheyreMadeInTheDessert

Race Day 1 - Learning the ropes We’ve made it to the I-80! Day 1 has been a learning curve for us all. We’ve had a great opportunity to understand how the competition works and how our system likes to operate, including the best way to launch, chase and catch our riders. We managed collate all this knowledge into a cheeky evening practice sesh and, after another mechanical tweak session, we’re are very excited to see what tomorrow holds. Take Off 🛫 At 1pm this afternoon, Arion 5 was loaded into the back of a van and began it’s long journey to Battle Mountain. Our bike truly is the product of blood sweat and vac bag tears. Looking back it’s felt like we’ve been building for an absolute lifetime, but in reality we’ve only been manufacturing for 37 days! On average our work days were 19 hours long, which equates to 703 hours each...that’s 19 weeks of work squeezed into 5! The count down is now on and it’s time to focus before the competition. We’re ready and raring to go but we hope you can cut us some slack when we turn up to the WHPSC looking a little tired!
