Continuing the celebrations of National Stationery Week, I decided to create a Pro Tip Tuesday based on Greeting Cards. Here are my four tips for making great greeting cards that sell: 1. The first tip is obvious but crucial: carefully choose a theme that fits the occasion. Select a clear theme and add a quirky touch. For example, a birthday cake is an obvious motif for a Happy Birthday card, but how you illustrate it makes it your own personal style. 2. Think about the layout. Portrait cards sell well on the shop floor as they are easy to display. 3. I like to imagine the person who will receive the card. Are they a cat lover? Do they like gardening? Include something unique and relatable to the receiver of your card. 4. Make sure that your text is visible in the top third of your card. Choose a font and placement that complements your design. I hadn't planned to post a Pro tip today. I'm working on this week's prompt for Jehane's Golden Thread Week 19. Part of the prompt involves recolouring the previous pattern from last week. I thought I'd share my quick method for altering colours in Photoshop. For those seasoned pros, you might already know this tip. Assuming you created all your motifs on separate layers. Step 1: Create a layer and then import your colour palette for reference. Step 2: Select the motif layer. Then select mode and then hue saturation. Step 3: Check the "colourize" box and then you can play around with the hue, saturation, and lightness. To help maintain colour consistency, take note of the numbers and use the same settings. Bonus tip: You can also use the paint bucket tool. First, select the colour you want to use with the eyedropper tool. Then use the selection tool and select the area you want to recolour. Finally, use the bucket tool on the selected area to recolour your motifs. Swipe to see the whole process. Hi Hoping everyone is doing very well. It's Monday, which means time for another art tip. Lets talk about ‘POSES, GESTURES & EMOTIONS’ Our characters have emotions just like us but sometimes just depicting the emotion through facial expressions is not enough. Understand how your body language changes when you feel a particular emotion and the same is applicable to your characters. For example- lets say your character is afraid of something like the cupboard in the corner and it has to open it and take out a pair of socks from it, your character knows that has to open the drawer but its body would not cooperate and bend backwards in hesitation. It might even cover its eyes from the fear of seeing something coming out from the cupboard and chasing it. Observing details like these and applying them to your illustrations would make them all the more impactful. Hope you found this helpful. Hello, here is my Pro Tip Tuesday on a Wednesday. I had a bit of a Mercury retrograde kind of day yesterday. My last workshop for Sketchbook Cafe is tomorrow. I'm sad as I had such a lovely group of students; I will miss them. I am just sharing my 6 tips to keep a consistent Sketchbook practice. Tip 1 : Why? Decide why you want to keep a sketchbook. There can be so many different types of sketchbooks. For example, a daily art journal, trying out new techniques, making a reference library of motifs, or just a brain dump of ideas. The choice is yours. Tip 2 : Environment. As James Clear mentions in the book Atomic habits set up your environment helps set up a daily practise. Set up a tiny corner in your home that is your place to create. Make a little permanent space to sketchbook any time. Tip 3: Get ready to go. Tools ready to go. Always have a bunch of art supplies ready to go. A small pencil case of art supplies and pencils. You can sketch any where. Tip 4: Set up a date. Set up a regular date with yourself to use your sketchbook. 15 minutes in the morning daily or Sunday afternoon. Decide when, where, and how. Be consistent. Tip 5: Play over perfection. A sketchbook is a safe place to play and be free. Don't get bogged down with perfection. By having fun, you will want to visit your sketchbook more consistently. Finally Tip 6: Fun with Friends. Sketch booking with friends is a fun way to maintain accountability and ensure you use your sketchbook. Why not start your own Sketchbook Cafe. That’s my tips for today. I hope you like them. Hi Hoping everyone is doing very well. It's Monday and which means time for another tip of the week. Todays my tip is THUMBNAILING Sometimes when we read a text or listen to a prompt, it's very clear in our head what we want to draw and how it should look. Which is absolutely brilliant. But go beyond that. Possibility that what was clear in your head is what most of them would have envisioned too. Draw what comes to your mind first. Then go beyond that. Draw a few more atleast maybe 3 to 6 or even 9. But a minimum of 3 or 4. The best ideas are often the ones that pop up when all your ideas are used up and exhausted and you are pushing through to still come up with them. This is where your brain uses up all its library of references and goes for something crazy and unexpected, sometimes totally surprising you. This may not always work. Sometimes I still find myself totally loving what I first came up with. Well, I lost nothing. I go back and use what I loved the most. Creativity is a muscle. The other day I saw someone using parchment paper to protect the white parts of the paper. Usually I use another piece of paper under my wrist and constantly move it in the direction of my hand. I think by using the parchment method really change a lot; the sections you don't have to touch won't be touched and yet, due to the paper's smooth texture, it won't represent a damage to the under paper. I am almost finished with teaching the Sketchbook Cafe workshop with my fantastic students. I thought it would be a good idea to continue my Pro Tip Tuesday posts by sharing a few insights from the workshop: The first is using a drawing prompt list for sketchbook practice, which can help you focus on specific skills or ideas you want to explore. I began a mini sketchbook specifically for creating cute animal characters, but I found myself in a creative rut. To overcome this, I used a drawing prompt list for my sketchbook practice. This has helped me diversify my portfolio of cute animal characters, drawing inspiration from Jennifer Orkin Lewis's book, Draw Everyday Draw Every Way. Hi, I am Reshu. I am here with the last tip for this month. Lets talk about art blocks. Art Blocks are common among artists. Sometimes you can't find the motivation to make art or you might want to draw but can't figure out how to start. We have all been there. In such a situation, I would advice not to push yourself to create art. This time is better spent doing other things that you love. Taking a break gives a fresh perspective and inspiration to draw again. You could move away from your work table and go outside or travel- the outdoors always inspire me. Trying new art mediums, doing colour swatches, sketching from reference images, taking part in art challenges have helped me in the past to break the art block. I hope these tips help you someday! #happyreadingwithellie When reading a novel, you find yourself imagining what the main character might look like. Luckily with Picture Books there is little imagining needed! Designing story boards and working with Nicholas (@thechildrensillustrator) throughout the Character Development process was a brilliant experience. Here are some tips that I have discovered ⬇️ 🎨 Do your research: Look at some of your favourite stories and focus in on how the characters are portrayed. Maybe it’s the colours used or the art medium. Each illustrator will have their own style and it’s important to find someone who will help you to perfectly represent your characters. 🎨 Trial and Error: Be prepared for lots of variations. This became especially apparent for The Little Red Kite. I had a rough idea of how I wanted him to look but it took some different attempts and tweaks from Nicholas to find the perfect balance. 🎨 Consider Change: Think about how your Character may change throughout the story. Will they look the same as the start or will there be adaptations throughout the story to showcase an exciting change. 🎨 Referencing: Having photos to use as a reference can be really useful. Maybe you are designing a character based off a family pet? By having lots of photographs of your Dog or Cat, mean that you can notice minor details (for example fur patterns/marking) that will help to make your Character a perfect representation of your muse!
