#happyreadingwithellie When reading a novel, you find yourself imagining what the main character might look like. Luckily with Picture Books there is little imagining needed! Designing story boards and working with Nicholas (@thechildrensillustrator) throughout the Character Development process was a brilliant experience. Here are some tips that I have discovered ⬇️ 🎨 Do your research: Look at some of your favourite stories and focus in on how the characters are portrayed. Maybe it’s the colours used or the art medium. Each illustrator will have their own style and it’s important to find someone who will help you to perfectly represent your characters. 🎨 Trial and Error: Be prepared for lots of variations. This became especially apparent for The Little Red Kite. I had a rough idea of how I wanted him to look but it took some different attempts and tweaks from Nicholas to find the perfect balance. 🎨 Consider Change: Think about how your Character may change throughout the story. Will they look the same as the start or will there be adaptations throughout the story to showcase an exciting change. 🎨 Referencing: Having photos to use as a reference can be really useful. Maybe you are designing a character based off a family pet? By having lots of photographs of your Dog or Cat, mean that you can notice minor details (for example fur patterns/marking) that will help to make your Character a perfect representation of your muse! Three years ago, I took one of the most terrifying steps towards my writing career by self-publishing my first two books. As a dyslexic I had a lot of setbacks when it came to writing. One of those is that I really struggled with editing and the my finances weren't great either - meaning I did everything myself. Overall, these two books will always hold a special place in my heart for being the first ones that had my mark on them and an important part of my writing journey. It’s a very happy #NationalSpinachDay over here— #SylviasSpinach has over 100,000 copies in print! Now in her 10th year (geriatric in publishing age) Sylvia has done something none us could have imagined a decade ago. When the book came out in 2012, it didn’t look like a success. We were such newbies: it was my 1st book, @annaraff’s 2nd & only the 3rd book tiny startup @readerstoeaters published. It received lukewarm reviews & sold something like 700 copies. But…. …kids liked it! And so did their parents! And so did NGOs on a mission to help kids love healthy food. At an #AWP conference the following year, I heard a speaker offer the advice that just because a book’s debut has come & gone is no reason to stop promoting it. Your book is your book forever. So I kept promoting it, and more & more people kept reading it. The tipping point was when a food access org in Spokane figured out they could use free books as a way to encourage families to use their #SNAPEd benefits at farmers markets. I visited a school where 80% of kids are eligible for food assistance & gave away 200 free books. I told them they could get more free books if they brought their parents to the farmers market. AND THEY DID. #SNAP participation increased dramatically when families learned they could get free books at #farmersmarkets. This model expanded to markets across WA, then across the country. WIC offices began ordering it to give away to clients by the thousands. Recently, an organization in #Maryland ordered 50,000 copies to give away across the state this June to encourage families to shop local farmers markets this summer. Sylvia hit that incredible 100,000 copy number we couldn’t have imagined 10 years ago. Which is to say: just because a book doesn’t look like a success right out of the gate, don’t discount the incredible life of its own it may take on in the hands of the right readers. Sometimes it takes awhile for a book to find its audience; sometimes, apparently, it takes a decade. Happy Birthday, Sylvia Spivens. We thought because we are based in Edinburgh, that these would be going off to the Amazon depot in Deunfermline . . . but NO! A.I. says most of this stock is going to Amazon in Coventry. Except for Charlie Roy (@dayinspace)'s novel The Broken Pane, half of which are going to Sutton in Ashfield and the other half of which are going to New Rossington . . . the A.I. generated epicentres of your sales, obviously Charlie! Some of us small publishers don't rush into working with Amazon. First there isn't much (if any) profit in there, so writers' royalties on the 500 odd books pictured here, are going to be small or even in the negative. Then there is Amazon and their operations, and all the things we don't know . . . the data collected, the cartel, the one-click patents, the removal of competitors' products, the warehouse conditions, treatment of employee dissent, their opposition to trade unions, their sale of Wikipedia articles as books, their deplatforming of orgs like Wikileaks . . . the list is long Amazon! Taking a stand and not selling on Amazon is difficult, though. We know few writers who do not want their books to be on there. The review system is great for writers, and readers too. And since such a huge percentage of people shop there, it is an absolute 'must' for writers to be on this website. Amazon has over 50% of the UK print book market, and at least three quarters of publishers' ebook sales. For our own ebooks, it is nearer 90%! Yet, everything about the behemoth, the colossus, the retail dreadnought, the leviathan AMAZON is impressive once you get in there. Everything is automated and controlled by A.I. One of these boxes costs £3.40 to ship across the UK, and each contain about about 30 books. Our own distributor charges us as much as £3.85 to ship just one book! So with all this in mind, and conflicted as we were as this delivery goes off into Amazon's mysterious UK depots, the only sane response has been . . . . . .
