Saturday night in Nagasaki and it's best to make reservations.. super fun in Japanese! This was the day my husband arrived to visit and we walked the length and breath of Shindaikumachi, only to find all restaurants we tried were full. We were happy to chance on this one, and what a lucky coincidence. I think this was mackerel, raw, of course. And that's all my fishy meals covered now. I ate a lot of sushi while in Japan, but while I are in a restaurant every now and then, I lived near a superb supermarket with the best deli, and ate loads of vegetarian sushi from there! Maybe my next pictures will be of Kakigōri. What you think?
Just another casual cut-price lunch in the small farming and ceramics town of Hasami when I played truant and drove around the pleasant Kyushu countryside with my visiting husband. I am dreaming of visiting Japan again and while I get that people want to see the sights and buzz of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, it's the little towns and small cities that I love the best. Honestly considering just returning to Kyushu because there is so much I haven't seen yet.
As I am enjoying my lovely Sunday afternoon to blog, time for the triple strike of images. I have been trying to write a blog post on Nagasaki, but there's so much, who knows when I finish it. This, however, I am not sure whether to share. One of the three or four times I ate fish while in Japan, in a small alley in Shindaikumachi which was my neighbourhood for three weeks (before I moved on to Urakami). And clearly before I dissected a mackerel at uni and dug up a couple hundred Anisakis ssp. Chance find while strolling through the market after uni, a six-seater sushi restaurant run by a lovely old gentleman, food ordered with my grotty Japanese skills and the help of the other patron. Cost, about 7.50 Euro for this plate. Very good quality fish. Who said Japan is expensive?

A work of the important kokeshi artist Kazuo Takamizawa . Born in Maebashi in Gunma Prefecture, in 1927 he began producing kokeshi in the 1950s. His first works (1950s / 1960s) were almost totally devoid of colors and decorations, apart from the work of engraving the camellias on his kokeshi . Gradually he begins to introduce bright colors, more complex decorations and above all the traditional black bob for the hairstyle as a completion of his works. He wins the prestigious and highly coveted " Japanese Prime Minister " award . 📍⛩️Shofukuji Temple (聖福寺, Shōfukuji) is the first Zen temple constructed in Japan 🌸🇯🇵 It was founded in 1195 by a priest named Eisai, who introduced the teaching of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Inside the Shofukuji’s Buddhist Sanctum, there is a beautiful altar where 3 Golden Buddha statues are displayed. They each represent the past, the present, and the future✨ Right in front of the temple, there is a wooden post that has a rope line which leads directly to the golden Buddhas.
