The investigation began on Sunday, April 21, when Central Station deputies responded to a theft report in Loma Linda, where a victim had the tailgate stolen from their 2019 Toyota Tacoma. Deputies were able to identify and locate a red Nissan Sentra as the vehicle used to commit the theft. They learned that the stolen tailgate was dropped off at a residence in the 6900 block of Tippecanoe Avenue in unincorporated San Bernardino. On Tuesday, April 23, authorities conducted a probation search at the residence and found 13 tailgates from Toyota, Chevrolet, and GMC trucks, along with five stolen vehicles. The sheriff's department has identified the suspects as Salvador Gonzalez, 29, of Whittier as the main suspect, a press release said. Gonzalez was arrested for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Operating a Chop Shop, and Vehicle Theft. He was booked on $40,000.00 bail but has since posted bail and was released from custody. The investigation is continuing by the San Bernardino County Auto Theft Task Force. The project will span a critical 5.2-mile corridor along Waterman Avenue, containing encampments with approximately 200 homeless individuals, and will include the maintenance tunnels of the freeway structure, pedestrian passageways, and surrounding neighborhoods. This area includes two state right-of-way areas, State Route 18 and Interstate 210. “This new funding will get people out of tents and into housing across California,” said Governor Gavin Newsom, who announced the grants during a virtual press conference. “But it is not just about addressing homelessness. It is about taking back our parks and sidewalks.” “I am thrilled that San Bernardino will be receiving nearly $4.6 million from Governor Newsom and the State of California to address encampments in our City,” said San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran. “This funding is a significant step forward to clean up Waterman Avenue and to provide essential support and resources to individuals experiencing homelessness in our city.” The funding will provide permanent housing for 60 individuals and assist in securing interim housing placements for at least 40 unhoused individuals, as well as provide support services that may lead toward permanent housing. Within a 12-month period, over 200 bites were reported. Statistics revealed that there were 238 dog bites on citizens in San Bernardino from December 2021 to December of 2022. Some of these bites happen on the dog owner’s property, some occur while families with small children are out walking or when adults are outside exercising. The grand jury report includes a total of seven findings and 12 recommendations for the City of San Bernardino. City staff received the report in January 2023 and began to prepare the City’s response to the findings and recommendations. During the next San Bernardino City Council meeting on Wednesday, April 17, city leaders are expected to review and approve the response to the grand jury report titled “Who Let the Dogs Out? On Thursday, April 4, San Bernardino Animal Control Officers were called to a veterinary office on Highland Avenue regarding two three-month-old labrador retriever mix puppies had been abandoned in its parking lot overnight. One of the puppies had what appeared to be burns to their face, ears, and body. The puppies were taken to the San Bernardino Animal Shelter for assessment, where technicians determined the puppy had suffered severe injuries that needed to be treated by a veterinarian. Both puppies were transported to the Shelter’s contract veterinarian. The uninjured puppy was cleared by the veterinarian, but the severely burned puppy, named “Ember” required immediate hospitalization and treatment due to the severity of her injuries. Based upon how and where the puppies were found, it is believed this may have been an intentional act of animal cruelty. The vet has determined the injuries and wounds were likely caused by fire, a press release said. A team of veterinary specialists is still working to save Ember, and an experienced foster caretaker has been lined up to provide ongoing care to help her recover once she is released from the hospital. The bill is known as the Secured Transactions and Organized Theft Prevention (STOP) Act, and is a bipartisan effort to combat retail theft. The goal of the STOP Act is to prioritize public safety and safeguard local economies, increase enforcement and introduce tougher penalties for suspected shoplifters, and enhance the safety of employees and customers. While California deals with a dangerous rise in retail theft, AB1990 would permit a peace officer to conduct an arrest without a warrant for a misdemeanor shoplifting charge, if the officer did not directly observe the shoplifting, provided there is probable cause the individual has engaged in shoplifting. Under existing law, for a warrantless arrest on a misdemeanor, which includes retail theft, the crime generally has to be committed in the officer’s presence to make an arrest. Current law also generally requires the citation and release of someone arrested for a misdemeanor rather than being booked. AB 1990 would allow a peace officer to use their discretion to arrest and book a suspect involved in theft from a store, rather than citing and releasing them as required under existing law. Ruiz, 25, improved to 14-0 with 8 knockouts after his latest fight against Oziel Santoyo, who previously had 16 wins and 2 losses. The bout took place Saturday night in Naucalpan, Mexico. Ruiz’s boxing journey started at @sbcityparksandrec's Meadowbrook Park when he was 13, after watching his older brother in the ring. He fell in love with boxing after winning his first amateur fight. When we spoke to Ruiz Monday night by phone, he talked about the importance of youth involvement with sports and other recreational activities. In a three-day period, over $10,000 worth of shoes have been stolen. Redlands Police are investigating a series of thefts from the Nike store in the Mountain Grove Shopping Center. The thefts occurred between March 31 and April 2. On Sunday, March 31, 30 pairs of shoes valued at $4,800 were stolen. On Monday, April 1, a suspect stole approximately $3,000 worth of shoes. Then on Tuesday April 2, two suspects ran out of the back doors with 16 more pairs of shoes valued at $3,000. Tesla Motors and ViaWest Group have announced that they will be building a state-of-the-art Collision Service Center in San Bernardino. It will be the Inland Empire's first Tesla owned and operated Collision Service Center. The facility will be owned and operated by Tesla Motors. Staff will perform full structural repair and light collision work to customer’s electric vehicles. Cosmetic repairs on parts including bumpers, trunks, side mirrors, wheels and glass will also be available. The 30,000 square foot collision center will be located at 424 W. Orange Show Lane near E Street. The Center will not include a sales office or showroom, and is expected to open in 2025. Once fully operational, the center is anticipated to employ up to 90 employees over two shifts. “Having Tesla in San Bernardino is a big win for the Inland Empire,” said Mayor Helen Tran. “There are more and more Tesla’s on the road every day, and not having to travel to L.A. or Orange Counties is very appealing for local and potential owners.” The other three closest Tesla owned and operated collision facilities are currently in Aliso Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, and Santa Monica. The other male is hospitalized. The shooter fled and is believed to still be on the run. The Harris Building at 300 North E Street is considered a historically significant landmark within the downtown corridor of the City of San Bernardino. El Corte Ingles, S.A., a Spanish Corporation (ECI), succeeded the Harris Company and acquired ownership of the Harris Building in May of 1998. According to a city memorandum, ECI has struggled to locate tenants to occupy the property since acquiring it. The property has also "endured many acts of vandalism and trespassing because of the vacant status." The Harris Building is the last remaining ECI property in the United States. ECI has determined that it is no longer economically viable to continue to maintain the property. The City council approved a resolution to accept the gift during last Wednesday's meeting. Upon acceptance of the donation of the building, the property will be brought before the city's planning commission to find conformity with the city’s general plan. The donation of the Harris Building is expected to strengthen the city’s real property portfolio and provide future revenue sources. The impressive Harris Company building opened on November 7, 1927 and was built as a fireproof structure that would include all the modern amenities of the time. It housed a basement, first floor, mezzanine level, second floor, third floor and roof garden. Investigators identified 19-year-old Isaiah Martinez, of Redlands, as the shooter and 20-year-old Jayson Alexandro Alfaro, of San Bernardino, as the getaway driver," police said. A third suspect, a 17-year-old Redlands teen, was identified as an involved co-conspirator. Officers responded to the shooting in 1200 block of Clay Street shortly after 2:30 p.m. Witnesses said the suspects chased the victim through the center and exited through the doors to the gymnasium. "Martinez shot the victim outside the center before fleeing the scene," police said. All three suspects were arrested on attempted murder and conspiracy charges. Martinez and Alfaro are being held on $2 million bail. The 17-year-old was also charged with a probation violation and is being held at Juvenile Hall. The victim is recovering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Police believe the shooting was planned in retaliation for a stabbing that occurred in December 2022 near the Mountain Grove shopping center. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘁𝗮𝘀? | A baseball team's rebranding snafu got lots of attention. But nevertheless, it's almost time for Chaquetas. The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the Dodger's Single-A Affiliate team, announced last week that they would become the “Chaquetas” during the three-event Copa de la Diversión series as an homage to the iconic jackets that Mariachi players wear. Fans on social media quickly called out the word’s double meaning and the team quickly removed its announcements regarding the name. They put the name through the vetting process all over again, and after several hours, the team and its stakeholders decided to stick with the name and reposted the announcement on their decision to play as the Chaquetas. While the word Chaqueta literally translates as “jacket” from Spanish to English, you'll quickly learn that Chaquetas has another meaning if you refer to the Urban Dictionary. The name choice is, in part, a tribute to Dodgers pitcher and Rancho Cucamonga resident Joe Kelly, who wore a black mariachi jacket to the team’s White House reception in July 2021. Mariachi had already taken as another team’s name so team officials started thinking about other ideas and eventually landed on Chaquetas. The limited edition Chaquetas baseball hats went on sale Tuesday, and whether or not it's a stroke of luck, they're all sold out. Funded by Edison International shareholders and IBEW Local 47, this scholarship is focused on growing Black, Asian Pacific Islander, Native American and female representation in Southern California Edison’s skilled workforce. Graduates are eligible for entry-level, skilled trade positions at SCE once they complete the Powerline Mechanic Certificate Program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, obtain a Class A driver’s license and complete SCE pre-employment requirements. Jobs will be located within SCE’s 50,000-square-mile service area, which may require graduates to relocate for their positions. The Lineworker Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, tools and support services, such as housing, transportation and childcare, needed to complete the requirements, up to $25,000 per recipient. 𝗠𝘁. 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 | Construction crews are continuing to work within the BNSF Railyard as part of the San Bernardino Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge project. Transit officials have provided the following information for the March 18 weekly update: On the north side of the project, crews are currently building bents that will support the spans of the new bridge and are working on installing utilities. This work requires using a method known as cast in drilled hole, drilling approximately 30’ holes into the ground, which will then be filled with concrete. Ongoing construction activity is expected to take place weeknights Monday, March 18 through Wednesday, March 27 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. On the south side of the project, crews are working on the wall installation for the south bridge approach for the future bridge. The work requires moving and compacting dirt and installing pre-cast wall sections. There will be intermittent lane shifts on 3rd Street to accommodate this work. Construction activity will be ongoing and is anticipated to take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Noise may be heard and vibrations may be felt. Large vehicles hauling materials may also be seen traveling in the area. The new bridge is anticipated to open in 2025. In Rialto, a 23-year-old man died after being struck on the tracks near Eucalyptus Avenue. Metrolink's San Bernardino Line 308 to San Bernardino was stopped between Rialto and San Bernardino Depot. The morning incident is being investigated as an accident. Several hours later in Fontana, a 27-year-old man died after being struck on the tracks near Palmetto Avenue. San Bernardino Line 329 to Los Angeles was stopped between Rialto & Fontana. The afternoon incident is being investigated as a suicide. The incidents were unrelated and alternate transportation options were provided after both collisions.
