While I may be a Bronco fanatic, I occasionally delve into shenanigans with vehicles from other manufacturers. Early in June 2018 I was having a conversation with a longtime family friend named Rene Fernandez. Rene and I got into a conversation about classic cars and trucks, surprisingly, huh?!?!😅 In the conversation he mentioned that his old Scout, which had once been his daily driver, just sadly sat in a state of disrepair in his driveway. Many people in Rene’s situation would rather leave a classic vehicle in the perpetual state of disrepair rather then sell to someone with the means, intent, and ability to bring these old gems back to life. I knew Rene was ready to let it go. A few days later, I paid a visit to Rene’s house and inspected the 1978 International Scout II, which I jokingly dubbed, “The Hulk”. The vehicle was extremely solid and had a beautiful original paint and graphics scheme with amazing patina. Rene stated that he believed that the engine and transmission were still in good condition, but the expectations were low. Besides that, modern restorers have been upgrading these vintage vehicles with modern drivetrains. I shared the vehicle with a few people who I knew were interested in Scouts, but nobody seemed interested. Almost one full year later, during a conversation with a vintage four wheel drive fanatic from Boerne, Texas, I was able to connect the Scout with its next caretaker. I negotiated the purchase, from my friend Rene, as the friendly middleman (zero commission) for $3,800 and the Scout was shipped to the hill country of Texas. I lost track of the Scout after it was shipped out of El Paso in July 2019. A few weeks ago, I was watching reels on Instagram and there it was… “The Hulk”! A young man named, Parker White @Bronco.88 from Georgia, had posted a video clip of “The Hulk” at the shop where he worked on vintage scouts @the_scoutman . My connection with Parker involves a vintage Bronco, but that’s another story. Sorry for not posting more often but yesterday I saw something very rare. As I was strolling around Lisbon my eyes caught something I only saw previously online. An #internationalscout ! I have no idea how it got to Portugal but there it was with a later import plate with but showing it was made in 62. The International Harvester Scout was produced from 60 to 80 with minor changes. It was an #offroad made to compete with #jeep . This seems to be a #scout80 pickup with detachable roof as most were. It’s jingle was “Anything less is just a car” Even though it was made for rough work with plenty of petrol engines and later a Diesel it kind is a predecessor of later modern #suv . It started like the Jeep with 4inline 2,5 L and later having 6inline and V8 going up to 5.0L. It was always assembled in the USA and about half a million were made. To see one here in Portugal is kind of extraordinary.
