Compact Book Light anyone?! I recently learned this compact book light technique from @pdmokry, and it’s been my go-to interview setup for the past few months. ⚪️Book Light: A large, soft light source created by bouncing light off any surface (preferably a white surface, like a wall or an ultrabounce) that will return light back into your choice of diffusion. Essentially doubling the diffusion of your light. Typically, a booklight requires at least three stands to hold the light, the bounce, and the diffusion. So, learning that I could achieve the same results with a more compact version using just one C-stand got me pretty stoked. The first time I used a book light, it sold me after I saw how soft the shadows were on my subject, creating a very natural wrap of light. For years, I relied on the trusty softbox, which isn’t bad—I still use it occasionally. But I realized I wasn’t putting much thought into my lighting. It had become a routine of one large softbox, a hair light, and calling it good. While it worked fine, I wanted to light with purpose. It wasn’t until I started practicing and researching different lighting techniques and types of diffusion that I noticed how much I was missing. First time on set with the new @sonycine Bruano 6k FF paired with a Leica 65mm Summilux-C 🔑 💡 - @aputure.lighting 600d with 5ft softbox cut with a 4x4 silk I choose to go with this source as key, because we had multiple people for this one set up and it’s easy to adjust if someone sat down with glasses. All we would have to do lift the light and 4x4 to prevent reflections. Hair light - 200x with a 3ft softbox. These are great because it’s a light weight fixture and we can control the power and kelvin using the Sidus link app. Fill - 4x4 bounce. We wanted shape, so we back it up a bit. Background - we used one 600d bouncing off the ceiling directly behind the pillar, to bring up the overall room and also add some shape to the plants on the right of the frame. We also used a 300d tucked in the left side of the frame with a Aputure spot to highlight the G.
