Our writers cohort held in January this year and led by guest mentor Melissa Noel, was a remarkable success, igniting inspiration and passion for storytelling among the participants. As we continue to nurture this newly created community, we're excited to offer a transformative opportunity to 4 members of this co-hort : attending the Bocas Lit Festival in Trinidad. This immersive week of writers workshops, readings, panel discussions, and more promises to deepen their literary journey and amplify their voices. On what many of us deem to be the official start of Carnival in the Caribbean and its Diaspora, Filmmaker and Writer @cecileemeke reflects on its historical roots (and we share a few of our favourite images so far)... @cecileemeke 🇯🇲 in the shadow of t&t/brazil closing out, and as the second week of lent is underway, i’m reflecting on the historical roots of carnival in the caribbean as both a pre-lenten celebration & form of radical resistance. im reflecting on how we walk in the grief of the complexity of the entire truth of human history, not only in the last five hundred years but beyond. and how do we do that when it’s still on going? dysfunction has ravaged every aspect of human existence. where and who is truly safe? the human heart is so wicked & deceitful, can we even trust ourselves to be safe spaces? without meaning to we self sabotage by mistake, constantly hurting ourselves. the grief isn’t just emotional or historical, it’s neurological & epigenetic, it’s ecological and environmental, it’s in our bones and it’s in the land, it’s everywhere all around us even when we try to bypass or ignore it. ultimately carnival, like many human traditions, is the culmination of the best and worst of human history, inextricably bound together, impossible to ever untangle and start over. yet by the spirit who created all things, beauty & joy can and does continue to emerge from the chaos, even if only for glimpses & moments. for me, playing mas means so many things, but ultimately it’s a moment to step into the impossible paradox & complexity of what it means to be human & experience a taste of the joy that is and that is to come 🌬️🌱✨ #CarnivalSeason #History #Ritual #Resilience #IslandGirlsRock

Our posts for Black History Month have made this fact even more apparent. So much brilliance, many without formal education or even literacy. The trauma of slavery is not just the lasting financial impact on the people who were oppressed and their descendants. The shared self-inflicted trauma and tragedy to society as a whole is the loss of so many opportunities for advancement. The unfortunate direct result of the dehumanizing of a whole group of people and stripping them of their dignity and personhood. I cannot even begin to fathom how much talent and genius was wasted in these fields of blood. This part is the shared trauma of the ugly scar that is slavery. A lesser trauma than the other but nonetheless a trauma. Everyone has inherent dignity and no life is insignificant enough to be stripped of personhood and no person superior enough to do the stripping. Robert Lloyd Smith, a prominent figure in politics and business, was born on January 8, 1861, in South Carolina. He was fortunate to be born to free black parents, one of whom was a schoolteacher. Growing up, Smith received his education in the public elementary schools of Charleston. In 1875, Smith enrolled at the University of South Carolina with hopes of furthering his education. Unfortunately, the university closed its doors to black students, forcing Smith to seek education elsewhere. He then made the decision to attend Atlanta University, where he graduated in 1880 with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and mathematics. After completing his studies, Smith relocated to Oakland, Colorado County, Texas. There, he took on the role of principal at the Oakland Normal School. This is statistic is true of any state. BIPOC farmers find it almost impossible to gain access to the most lucrative and financially sustaining parts of farming. This persistent and systemic issue stems from a chronic lack of access to capital, infrastructure, and land, which perpetuates this exclusion. Therefore these areas of production that require significant financial investment have remained largely inaccessible to the majority of black and brown producers. This exclusion is further exacerbated by constantly widening generational wealth gaps and the structural biases inherent in the system, both overt and subtle. The existence of generational wealth gaps can be traced back to the historical legacy of slavery and the ongoing oppression experienced by former slaves in our country. The next installment in the series on black agricultural innovators is Edmond Albius. Although not American, Albius, who was enslaved as a youth and living on the French colony island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, is responsible for the worldwide distribution of vanilla. Remarkably, this innovation was made when he was just 12!!!!. I reflected on my own experience and realized that when I was at that age, I was focused on secondary school and not thinking about inventing anything. This is what makes his invention truly remarkable and speaks to his extraordinary genius and exceptional acumen. Little is known about his early life and background. The plant had been brought from Mexico to Europe by the explorer Hernán Cortés but did not produce beans there due to the absence of a specific pollinator bee indigenous to Mexico. A man named Ferréol Bellier-Beaumont, who lived on Réunion, had come to own Edmond and taught him from a young age how to care for his many plants. One of those lessons included instruction for hand pollination, manually transferring pollen from male flowers to female flowers to produce fruit. In the 1840s, 12-year-old Edmond examined Bellier-Beaumont's vanilla vine flowers, which had been growing without yield for two decades, and observed that their male and female reproductive organs were not on separate flowers but contained within a single flower, separated by a flap-like membrane. He moved the flap and, beneath it, spread the pollen from the stamen to the pistil. Before long, the plants were producing beans. Word spread, and Réunion began cultivating vanilla and exporting it overseas. Within 50 years, the island had surpassed Mexico in vanilla production. This next installment is extremely special to me as a farmer; Booker T Whatley. He conceptualized and founded a system that helped me build foundational structure on my farm. This black food and agricultural pioneer founded the modern day CSA concept. So if you are part of a CSA or are a farmer and have benefited from having a CSA, you can thank this man. His contribution to that is not widely recognized. In fact Egypt Krohn, who is herself a food pioneer in sustainable agriculture, acknowledged that while he had conceptualized and greatly influenced most of the principles and practices that she uses and teaches, that she had never heard of him until I shared a post about him a few years back.
