Tewodros II was Emperor of Ethiopia from 1855 to 1868, remembered for his efforts to unify and modernize the country during a period of fragmentation and decline. Born Kassa Hailu, he rose from a local chieftain to become a key figure in Ethiopian history, advocating for centralization of power, administrative reforms, and the creation of a standing army. Tewodros sought to re-establish a strong monarchy and reduce the power of regional lords. His ambitions extended to modernizing Ethiopia through the introduction of new technologies and infrastructure. However, his rule was also marked by conflict, including a notable standoff with British forces at Magdala, which ultimately led to his death. Tewodros II's legacy is complex, embodying the tensions between tradition and modernization, national unity, and regional autonomy. Notable Achievements and Contributions: - Initiated significant administrative and military reforms aimed at centralizing power and strengthening the Ethiopian state. - Attempted to modernize Ethiopia by introducing Western technologies and educational practices. - His leadership during the Magdala campaign against British forces, though ultimately unsuccessful, is celebrated as a symbol of Ethiopian resistance and sovereignty.

Unnamed family in North Carolina (ca. 1940) Colorized version . Image 2: Original photograph . The only fact known about this photograph is that the people were migrant workers travelling from Florida. For historical context, during the era of Jim Crow it was dangerous for Black Americans to travel in the South. They were often harassed by law enforcement for no cause or attacked by White vigilantes. Moreover, they frequently were barred from restaurants and public accommodations. The Negro Motorist Green Book or simply the Green Book was a annual guidebook for Black American travelers. It was conceived and published by an African American, New York City postal worker Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1966. During this period legal discrimination against African Americans especially and other non-whites was widespread. . . . . . . . . #blackartinamerica #blackart #artlover #collecteurs #artcollector #collectart #blackartcollectors #blackartlovers #contemporaryart #shelovesblackart #blackphotographers #photographyart #vintagephotos #vintagephoto #1940s #americanhistory #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryfacts #northcarolina #florida

Meet Doris A. Davis, the first African-American woman mayor of a major metropolitan city in the United States between 1973-1977, as well as the second African-American woman chief executive ever. After working in the school districts as a teacher, Davis entered politics in 1965 becoming a City Council Member, a City Clerk and then elected Mayor of the City of Compton. A member of the NAACP, Urban League, the League of Urban Voters, and the founder of Daisy Child Development Center (a non-profit organization providing employment opportunities, housing, and child care for unwed teenage mothers). Davis primary focus was to lower the soaring crime rate, the emergence of hands and the unemployment rate that were skyrocketing; an impoverished city that needed drastic change. “I was sick Monday and I came to work. "For the torch of the incendiary, which has been known to show murderers and tyrants the danger line, beyond which they may not venture with impunity, cannot be wrested from you."- Lucy Parsons Today is April 28th and on this day in 1885, anarchists Lucy Parsons and Lizzie Holmes led the International Working People’s Association’s march to the Chicago Board of Trade building. Lucy Parsons was a social anarchist who would later evolve into an anarcho-communist. For over 70 years, she bravely and consistently advocated for women, children, and the rights of laborers. #blackhistory #blackhistory365

Dr. Dorothy Lee Forman Cotton (1930-2018) met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1960 when he preached at a church she attended in Virginia. The two began working together with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which organized peaceful protests and worked for the rights of Black Americans during the Civil Rights era. Cotton held a leading role in the group as the educational director of the Citizen Education Program ― one of the few high-level positions for women in the SCLC at the time. Dorothy remained an active civil rights educator throughout her career, and served as the Director of Student Activities at Cornell University from the 1980s–1990s. She lived in Ithaca until her death in 2018, and is buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ithaca, NY. Her legacy in Tompkins County is supported through the ongoing human rights and education work of the Dorothy Cotton Institute, and the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers, among many others. . #blackhistory365 #CorettaScottKing, #earth #starlight #Rose Got an update for you all on a post I did past February. The first of February I believe. About a rose I picked up last November. A rose doomed to the clearance rack where they don't get any water or sunlight anymore, and they dry up root bound in little pots. I planted her in the garden in November, too. I could have brought her inside, I suppose. But the name she was given made me feel like just going for it. Strongheart. Coretta Scott King collection, baby. Look at her. Strong indeed. I am happy. I mean you can see from the yellow rose behind her that she's got plenty more growing to do. But she's less than a year old so... You know, another reason I gave it a shot was that my gardens sit atop old old and older tobacco fields. So in the most literal sense, it's black history month every day of every month here where I am particularly in the gardens. People ask me sometimes what I do for these plants to grow so prolifically. I just plant them in the earth and give them a look over while I'm outside with them. Hang out a little bit. Turn the hose on every so often. I certainly don't do all the meddling I'm always told to do by the meddlers. I don't even grow plants. Nobody else does either. The earth does. The earth... and starlight. Just like with us. This Rose, she is not a single particle less than the earth itself, and Starlight. No joke. Haha this is awesome. I'm happy 😊 ✊️❤️‍🔥✨️ Ps. Honestly the more of Coretta Scott's teachings I read the more I think she was likely of a more enlightened and imperturbable mind than her husband. So I consider myself very fortunate to have happened by that Rose or I'd likely have never thought much about her at all. I imagine some of yall reading this were the same. Until now anyhow. You know it's kind of like that old saying: The moral arc of the universe may be vast but it airs towards enlightenment... or something like that hehe. That rose, her namesake has certainly shed light on many things that I hadn't been aware of prior and for 40 some years. Peace.

George Gervin. “The Iceman”. 5x All NBA First Team. 12x All Star. All Star MVP. 4x Scoring Title. NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. From growing up in poverty back home in Detroit, to becoming one of the greatest scorers and players to ever grace the court. A complete turnaround for the 6’7 shooting guard that would always dream of getting to that stage when he was younger — “I was just running the streets like any other kid, but the difference was that I was in love with basketball”. “Known for his use of the finger roll, Gervin’s style and play influenced many athletes during and after his era. For over a decade, he left defenders and spectators in awe with his ability to score at will, even over the most formidable defenders”. The first guard to win three titles in a row, with a career average of 26.2 PPG. A phenomenal career that spanned from the early 1970s through the mid 1980s, marking him a Spurs and NBA Legend. #georgegervin #iceman #theiceman #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryfacts #blackhistoryeveryday #otd #todayinhistory #nba #spurs #sanantoniospurs #basketball #basketballmemes
