🎷A scat a day keeps the doctor away! 🎙 I love the fact that, as a jazz vocalist, my job encourages me to make weird sounds with my mouth in the name of improvisation! 👄 Scat singing (and music improvisation in general) is actually both the most liberating AND scariest thing one can do! 🎵 Not all jazz vocalists scat sing but that doesn’t exclude that some vocalists are incredible improvisers regardless! @billieholidayofficial and @songstylistnancywilson are two of my favourite improvisers and they didn’t scat. Hello lovely people! I wanted to share a video clip of one of the last live gigs I did in September with my 4TET @spicejazzsoho in London. It’s a performance of a wonderful jazz standard called ‘All The Things You Are’ written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It’s a firm favourite with jazz musicians so you might have already heard it at quite a few jazz gigs although it has become custom to perform it at lightning speed which I think really jars with the incredibly romantic lyrics of the tune! Last Friday I was meant to perform at the @hjcjazzclub , one of the loveliest and most intimate Jazz venues in London. I remember being quite ill that day and was low on energy (quite unusual for me!). I can probably pinpoint the day that I became a Jazz freak to the very moment when a 6 year old me left unattened in front of the TV in Copenhagen (my big sister was babysitting) watched @thewizardofozfilm and discovered Judy Garland! Probably my favourite musical ever, I've loved this song since then and decided now was a good time to start singing it. This was recorded live @tlvenue in June and features the beautiful playing of @matyasgayer , Amy Baldwin and Winston Clifford. I have also finally decided to record an album of standards after almost 20 years of singing this wonderful artform so watch this space.
