Hey everyone! I know I didn't post on Friday, but better late than never. For this week's #BlackFriday, I would like to recognize someone outside of tech. EmmoLei Sankofa @emmolei is a composer, producer, musician, artist, and creative entrepreneur, channels her expansive creativity across music, visual media, and fine art. She is a native of Atlanta and a fellow Westlake HS alumni. I remember EmmoLei being so talented. She was one of the drum majors of our high school band. She has always had a passion for music and since then she has strived to be one of the greatest. "There was one time that I was talking to my dad and I told him that I wanted to be the best Black woman composer. And he said 'Why do you want to be the best Black woman, when you can be the best PERIOD?'." She took her talents to the screen and she was recently nominated for a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Original Film/TV Score in the Hulu series "The Other Black Girl". As my new album project was unfolding this spring with lush production and gifted musicians, I realized I had left the artwork on the back burner a little too long. Nothing like some serious pressure and financial strain to get the job done. I decided in the 11th hour to take it on myself and with limited knowledge and skill, this is what I came up with. Maria Ágata Szymanowska, nombre de soltera Marianna Ágata Wołowska (Varsovia 1789-San Petersburgo 1831) fue una compositora y pianista polaca. De talento precoz, dejaba a la audiencia sorprendida por la calidad de sus improvisaciones a la espineta. Desde 1805 y 1806 estuvo activa dentro de los círculos musicales de Varsovia. La joven «Marynia», ya bien conocida en los salones de Varsovia, fue enviada a París. Su marido y su familia se opusieron a que emprendiera una carrera como pianista y compositora. Estaba mal visto que una mujer de buena familia realizara espectáculos. Por este motivo, en 1820 el matrimonio se divorció y los niños permanecieron con María después de su separación. Idolatrada en vida e injustamente olvidada tras su muerte, fue una de las primeras profesionales virtuosas del siglo XIX. Viajó extensivamente por toda Europa, antes de establecerse permanentemente en San Petersburgo. Aparte de ser una virtuosa pianista de concierto, también es reconocida como compositora. If I’m truly honest, it’s been really hard to focus on the present moments.
