Happy Birthday to JOHNNIE "SCAT" DAVIS... born April 11, 1910 in Brazil, Indiana (1910- 1983) Johnnie played in the bands of Paul Johnson, Red Nichols, Fred Waring, Glen Gray, Jimmy Joy and Leo Baxter before discovering his ability as a scat singer. He headed to New York City, where he formed his own trio and eventually ended up in Hollywood. He appeared in his first film, Varsity Show, in 1937, and the same year appeared in the film Hollywood Hotel, where he introduced the Johnny Mercer song "Hooray for Hollywood". He appeared in fifteen films including Campus Cinderella (1938), Cowboy from Brooklyn (1938), Brother Rat (1938), Mr. Chump (1938), A Child Is Born (1939) and Sarong Girl (1943). Besides film, Johnny also worked in radio, including being a vocalist on Nitwit Court. He ended up in Detroit, Michigan where he was a popular television performer and finally settled in Arlington, Texas. He continued to play shows in Vegas, Reno and Tahoe until dying from a heart attack during a hunting trip in Pecos, Texas on October 28, 1983. #johnnyscatdavis #scatsinging

I value my songs so much that if they're not done correctly, I'd rather they not be done at all. Two reasons Louis Armstrong came to mind today: 1) hearing Miles Davis all day yesterday made me think "mind-blowing trumpet." And when you think "mind-blowing trumpet," next thought HAS to be Louis Armstrong. 2) I'm currently taking (& loving) a class at Santa Monica College called "Jazz in American Culture" and last week, the prof asked if we knew who Louis Armstrong was. Only I & another woman over 40 raised our hands. Good news is the students very quickly got an education on the architect of modern American music & singing, but it made me think about all the people from Gen X down who don't know Armstrong or understand how pivotal he is to the music they listen to today. To be fair, I've known who Louis Armstrong was since childhood, but until college it was mostly as the "What a Wonderful World, "Hello Dolly" guy than as the #musicalgenius that he was. I learned of his importance in school, but I didn't really "get it" until about 15 years ago when "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" came blaring out from NPR's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" on my car radio. I literally pulled over into a parking lot to listen. I heard the imagination, the mastery, the freedom, the joy. I dove into his work with The Hot 5s & Hot 7s (his recording combos that were progenitors for the #bebop combos of the post-swing band 1940s) where he pretty much invented the art of soloing ("West End Blues"), introduced #scatsinging to popular music ("Heebie Jeebies") & created music so full of life, personality & artistry he was in demand across the nation & around the globe. Because musicians recorded sides & not full albums back then, the best way to hear this era of Armstrong is thru compilations. The "Best Of" pictured here is a good start, but what's a #greatalbum is "The Complete Hot Five & Hot Seven Recordings" (all 4 discs or 93 songs), because on that u get treats like "Gut Bucket Blues", "Big Butter and Egg Man", "Lonesome Blues" & "Savoy Blues", the latter where u can hear #rockandroll germinating in the guitars of Lonnie Johnson & Johnny St Cyr. There's also a doc on AppleTV about Armstrong called "Black & Blue" worth checking out! #sayhisname #louisarmstrong #dailydevotional
