Listening to vinyl on my turntable are some of my favorite moments I’ll always cherish. Early on I’d listen by the fire with my father to a multitude of different vinyl and record collections, music ranging far and wide, from the eclectic, to soul, blues& jazz being my favorite. The raw, gritty nature of vinyl captivated me as it wasn’t perfect in nature but there was a certain magic in that. The artist’s soul was felt through the music 🎼 and I can’t wait to get my album on vinyl very soon. Happy heavenly Birthday to Jazz legend, Blossom Dearie who would have been 100 today, April 28. I am not sure how to describe Blossom Dearie. Her voice especially. It’s been described as childish, but that seems harsh to me. I know what they meant, but I feel like it is so layered and special. It is lilting and sweet, but also timeless and striking. This distinctive voice coupled with her elegant piano stylings charmed audiences around the world. Her vocal delivery and impeccable musicianship also left an indelible mark on the genre. Colleagues were smitten throughout her 5-decade career and her influence was (and is) far reaching. Dearie was considered a “musician’s musician”. Bill Evans notedly raved about her naming her as one of his models of piano playing. High praise by another legend. When asked about her style, she explained that playing the piano and singing were not separate in her mind, once saying that “For me it’s all just one and the same thing. I don’t like to do either one separately.” I appreciate that take and insight into her thinking. Both complimented each other in a way that is not often seen/heard. Apparently, she would often say she was simply a jazz musician learning to be a jazz singer. Awesome. Upon her passing, The New York Times wrote: “Blossom Dearie was an interpretive minimalist with caviar taste in songs and musicians, she was a genre unto herself. Rarely raising her sly, kittenish voice, Ms. Dearie confided song lyrics in a playful style below whose surface layers of insinuation lurked. It could hold 50 songs. Blossom held a few of those spots; as I was just discovering her music, and was madly in love with her voice. Happy Birthday Blossom Dearie! Blossom Dearie - Blossom Dearie (Verve Records, 1957 First US Mono Pressing) & (Verve Records, 2018 VMP Pressing) . Today, the 28th April, would have been the birthday of the legendary jazz singer and pianist Blossom Dearie. Although I don’t listen to a substantial amount of vocal jazz, I have found that I gravitate to this debut album at least once each year, usually on this date. In fact, over the past few years I have started to warm up to certain vocal jazz albums in addition to the obvious ones from the “big” names such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, etc, and in part this is down to Blossom Dearie. I have acquired a few of her albums over the years, including a signed album I found at a carboot sale for 50p, but my favourite by far is her 1957 self titled “Blossom Dearie”. The album was recorded over 2 dates on the 11th and 12th September, 1956, and was an accumulation of years of immersion soaking up the New York jazz scene. Dearie would frequent both clubs and rehearsal spaces, gaining as much experience of the music as possible, including being in Gil Evans’ basement whilst he and Miles Davis were workshopping ‘The Birth of the Cool’. Davis later referred to her as being “The only white woman who ever had soul”. What really sets “Blossom Dearie” apart, other than her unique vocal style, is her ability to sing in both English and French. It certainly adds a refreshing edge to the 14 tracks which range from ballads to more up-tempo humorous tracks. La voce siamo noi e se il nostro corpo e la nostra mente sono in salute, la voce lo sarà altrettanto 😇🎤 📚🎤 : Miro a dare una formazione personalizzata per ognuno, sia in ambito tecnico, sia in repertorio. Come ognuno di noi ha un corpo diverso, avrà di conseguenza una voce diversa, insieme ad una tecnica e un genere più adatti., è importante rispettare la propria unicità, seguendo i propri gusti e le proprie caratteristiche . La nostra voce parte dal nostro corpo, perciò è importante mantenere un'ottima cura di quest'ultimo; non solo quindi, limitarsi all'attenzione verso le corde vocali., il canto coinvolge tutto il nostro corpo, al contrario di quello che si può pensare. La voce inoltre, è uno strumento che porta noi cantanti ad utilizzare meccanismi e muscoli interni che non vediamo direttamente., tutto ciò può generare ansia., perciò è necessario educare ad una buona autopercezione e ad un ottimo equilibrio mentale e fisico, così che ogni suono e ogni brano possano essere emessi e cantati senza ostacoli. Come fu già detto da molti esperti, se si osserva, le corde vocali sono poste alla stessa distanza dalla mente e dal cuore., infatti, spesso i problemi legati al canto sono di natura emotiva o mentale, anche se ovviamente va da caso a caso e non è sempre così., è importante farsi controllare da un buon foniatra in ogni casistica personale. Durante le mie lezioni, oltre ai classici esercizi tecnici e al lavoro sul repertorio, utilizzerò delle tecniche di rilassamento e esercizi fisici con tecnica mindfulness appresa durante la mia formazione per sviluppare un'ottima autopercezione e un buon equilibrio emotivo legato al canto con un approccio corporeo rilassato. Il canto deve essere espressione di gioia, libertà, pace, mai il contrario.
