I was thinking about a visual image to celebrate Malaysia Day for a performance on stage with the band @wearefazz, then this came into mind - henna. That very thought came to me while we were rehearsing in the studio, for this festival Fragments of what I remembered about the experience are 1) the conversations I had with Nadine, the henna artist that said yes to work with my crazy idea, @hennacraze_by_nadinepaul 2) the earthy smell of henna, 3) also how extra the body feels when it is inked It felt surreal that I get to learn and embody it. It also came with the process - how it absorbs to the skin, how still you have to be - while waiting, how it darkens after the hours, and how it lightens after. It was humbling. I felt closer to my hands. They got amplified, together with its intricacies. Perhaps how it lingers and fades - the ink and it's smell, is also what reminds us about ephemerality. Of course, I made new friends with henna on my hands, and it lasted me through a few shows. [Chop-Chop Lettering] In conjunction with @i_want_festival , we’ve conducted Chop-Chop Lettering Workshop during the Malaysia Day weekend. The workshop was facilitated by @louieleewy , @whosdavidho & @kai.fam . With a few basic shapes, how can we create expressive typography? Participants were asked to use stamps to let their typographic creativity run loose in answering the question: "What do you want for Malaysia?" . Ranging from playful to measured to experimental, the outcomes were varied and explored many ways stamps can be used (and misused) to achieve interesting typography. All the kids are really adorable! Under the guidance of Hongjiejie @hongjiejieworkstation, both the kids and ‘big kids’ tried to become ministers. They let their imagination run wild, with some wanting to reduce homework, some wanting to make friends with other countries, and some wanting to build more houses.
