How wonderful are these colourful handpainted vintage hagoita paddles I found during my last trip to Japan. Hagoita paddles originally were used at New Year to play a game called Hanetsuki which is a badminton style game (using wooden paddles and a shuttlecock). Today they are often bought at New Year as a decoration to be hung up at home for good luck. All that bullshit about no “backsides”, no “erasies”, etc.?… The Oxford dictionary defines “kitsch” as: 1) noun - art, objects, or design, considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic knowing way. 2) adjective - considered to be in poor taste but appreciated in an ironic knowing way. However, I do not fully agree with this definition. I feel kitsch has no relation to bad taste. Bad taste is what it is. I would rather describe kitsch as a particular overwhelming aesthetic that offers your eyes too much to look at. Would you agree? I also shot the same scene on 8x10 and will edition it as a Riso print. Will post more about that soon!
