Welcome to #RPGFridays. This is post #003 wherein I discuss my recent roleplaying adventures. Last month, I made my first appearance as a special guest at a game convention, PAGE (the Philadelphia Area Gaming Expo!) I ran two adventures including one that I co-wrote for Shadowrun 2E - Paradise Lost, published by FASA. The other adventure I ran was Rahasia, an extremely rare and valuable adventure put out by Daystar. It was a thrill to meet some of my RPG heroes and also to meet some new people including Frank Mentzer, Jeff Dee, Bill and Ben Barsh of Pacesetter games, Professor DM, Joseph Bloch, and Ron Meischker (the PAGE convention host). The con went tremendously well. I have already been invited back for next year. While It was hard not to do a dodgeball picture with a flying wrench and Rip Torn, I went with another mainstay of mine for Inktober - AD&D art! I was thinking this was an Erol Otus piece because I was working completely from memory (my memory completely sucks at this point apparently), but it is obviously a Jeff Dee piece if you bother to casually glance at it. I even drew my dodger where lanky with skin tight armor - classic Dee. Oh well. Not my best work but I'm feeling rushed to catch up. I read Ernest Cline's "Ready Player One" sci-fi novel when it was published in 2011 (see my March 2, 2022 post), which rekindled my dormant interest in Dungeons & Dragons. The AD&D module Tomb of Horrors plays a significant plot role in the story, as the book's protagonist must navigate a recreation of the adventure on a virtual world to secure the first key that will unlock the treasure that grants its finder complete ownership and control of the all-encompassing OASIS virtual reality simulator. I upgraded my copy of Tomb of Horrors about a year and a half ago to this sealed copy. Despite remaining sealed for decades, the pressure from the shrink wrap has put some stress lines on the module's spine, which those of us who collect sealed modules, LPs and other vintage shrink-wrapped paper/cardboard are only too familiar with. 😖 Pictured: Dungeons & Dragons AD&D Module S1 Tomb of Horrors (1981 edition), sealed copy in shrinkwrap. Ah, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, or, as I like to call it, the "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" of D&D modules. Because, well, spaceships & aliens. 👽 Introduced at the 1976 Origins II convention, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was updated and published in 1980 as part of the acclaimed S series of AD&D modules which also included Tomb of Horrors (S1), White Plume Mountain (S2) and The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (S4). The campaign takes place on a downed spaceship in the Barrier Peaks mountain range, under the premise that the Grand Duke of Geoff has hired the player characters to stop the constant attack by strange creatures emerging from a cave (actually the entrance to the spacecraft). The module is regarded by many as among the best D&D adventures ever published. I played this module as a kid but don't remember much of it; my vague recollection was that I didn't particularly care for the sci-fi elements but, it does certainly make it stand out! OK, so not an RPG. Space Marines (1980) is a set of rules for military science fiction wargaming from Fantasy Games Unlimited. It is exactly as complex and kind of tedious as you’re imaging. Well, not entirely — it has a pretty good sense of humor actually, judging from the wide array of silly aliens you can play. There’s lots of human factions, reptile aliens, giant bugs. There’s bear people who have a constitutional monarchy and dog people who have a representative democracy. The bird people are oligarchs, the cat people have a feudal system. Kind of love all them. ¶ Two reasons I trot this out. First, the cover art is by Jeff Dee and all the interiors are by Dave Sutherland, two early, classic D&D illustrators. It’s particularly unusual to see Sutherland straying out of the TSR offices. ¶ Second is that this is clear proof that there were space marines in RPGs and wargames long before 40k. Originally written for the Official AD&D Game Tournament at Wintercon VIII (Detroit, November 1979), the adventure module, which takes place in the game's World of Greyhawk campaign setting, was the second in TSR's "Competition Series" modules used in official tournaments. In the campaign, the player characters embark on a quest to find the Soul Gem and must gather the four parts of magical metal that together form a key that grants them entrance to the Ghost Tower of Inverness, the former fortress of the wizard Galap-Dreidel. The key opens the doors which lead to a time portal that takes the campaign back to the age when the tower was still standing, and the party must navigate the tower's 4 levels to get to the Soul Gem at the top. There was a short time there for awhile when the great and powerful Jeff Dee did fantasy adventure module covers for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons… and they were glorious! These are some of my favorite covers to those early, iconic adventures and they are firmly burned in my brain. The walked a hard to tread line between real and imagined with a very distinct style about them. The nostalgia! Dee is still working today and delivering top shelf stuff. AD&D book club. The Village of Hommlet was the introductory module to Gary Gygax’s supermodule T1-4 The Temple of Elemental Evil. The design to Hommlet is ingeniously simple, a small, hick burg that has been plagued by a burgeoning evil cult. As with all of GGs early works the bare bones are here and it is up to the DM to fill in the little details. This template of a small town in peril from a nearby evil was one that would persist through multiple editions. A true classic and filled with some iconic Trampier illustrations, this one will always hold a special place in the history of the game. The updated Jeff Dee cover is a fun bit of action and really highlights his comic bookish style.
