I cannot stop thinking about the new neighborhood I discovered while in ATL last week: Castleberry Hill. The largest historical industrial area in the city, Castleberry Hill has been turned into an entreprenuer's haven, filled with restaurants, salons, galleries, and lofts. It's a strange place, tucked behind the behemoth Mercedes Benz Statium. Industrial Revolution-era brick warehouses, smokestacks, and sheds mix with modern graffiti art, rusty sewing machines hanging above doorways, and matte black cans strung over alleyways. It's hard to know what's abandoned and what's a chic art gallery. Best of all, it's home to the largest concentration of Black-owned businesses in the country. This Rust Belt enthusiast is so in love with the place. Back in 1965, on Monday nights, there was always something special cooking in the kitchen for Johnny and Kate. With mom religiously watching Julia Child on TV, everything was cooked in French crocks, and the children always had a look of wonder on their faces—but mostly because they could never tell what the hell they were about to eat. “Hey sis? What in Annette Funicello is that?” Johnny asked. “I don’t know Johnny, yours could be meat, could be cake?” Johnny looked back at his sis with that one good tooth and smiled. “I hope it’s meatcake!” he replied emphatically! Kate’s lamb stew with peas, potatoes and carrots, burned the roof of Kate’s tongue, and knocked the teeth right out of her mouth, but not before the second degree burns to her hands set in. Mom had forgotten to tell the kids the crockpots were boiling lava hot, so a quick visit to the ER is how they spent their evening. On a positive note, Mom’s meat cake won the annual Women’s Cooking League “Cook-Off” in Larchmont, again, three years in a row. While the ingredients are unknown, rumour has it, her minced beef and coffee cake streusel recipe was made by accident when Johnny stuck the bottom half of a cake recipe to the top half of a Minced Meat Pie recipe in mom’s cookbook. Described by Mom’s enemies as a “beatsauce from a Kentucky jail,” —no one could quite put a finger on it, but heck, there was something truly special about that meatcake!

Mum was an avid 'Royal Watcher' all her life and I can't imagine how happy she would have been to know that her 'Royal Collection' will now be housed by The Royal Archives' in The Round Tower at Windsor Castle! The King George & Queen Elizabeth Silver Wedding commemorative book was published in 1948 when mum was just 12! The Daily Telegraph Royal Tour Picture Supplement was published in 1954, when mum was 18. A pewter Coronation lighter and a commemorative replica gold plated 'Anointing Spoon - The original spoon (held by the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London) is made of gold and dates back to the 13th century, making it the oldest coronation piece. In the coronation ceremony Holy oil is poured from the Ampulla, which is in the form of a gold eagle, into the spoon. I just love the vintage ads for Cadbury, Clarks Shoes and Sharps Toffee. This is from “KAPITAL Aloha Brigade Lookbook 2006” and there’s literally SO many magazines to look at!! https://www.archivepdf.net “When looking at the unique world of Japanese fashion culture both past and present, it is almost impossible to overlook Kapital. They have maintained a true sense of authenticity and individuality in both their creative direction and products, and with each season, seem to be even more self-assured than their last. Kiro Hirata is the main architect of the brand and it’s creative direction, though it was Kiro’s father, Toshikiyo Hirata, who had initially started the company in Kojima Japan in 1985. Kojima was actually the source of the name itself as well, as it is often referred to as “the capital of denim”. When most people think of Kapital, they think of a couple of mainstay themes: Boro denim, Century denim, and the catalogs, all things they continue to produce. The yearly lookbooks that they release are, to me, most pertinent to understanding the unique way Kapital approaches the world - acting as a visual language of the philosophy of Kapital. They produce these with full creative control with often little change to the core team, adhering to guidelines set only by themselves with seemingly no limitation. This in itself seems to defy the way we collectively approach the fashion process, to remain true and unique at all costs.
