Most definitely not! Signing does not delay speech, but encourages it! The use of gesture is a natural form of early communication and gives the acquisition of language a boost! Signs are never used in place of spoken words and your baby will be greatly encouraged to communicate verbally, not in any way discouraged. At Sing and Sign we always sign alongside speech and often repeat the word we sign. Baby signing is not a replacement for talking to your baby, in fact the whole point of it is that it encourages you to talk more, and more appropriately too! Our signers frequently become little chatterboxes! We often have parents returning with their second, third or even fourth baby. The simplest way to appreciate this is to consider how โBye-byeโ is often among the earliest words babies say. Think about how we all encourage babies to wave bye bye, recognising they will enjoy this and that it helps to make them aware of an important concept. Waving encourages a baby to verbalise โbye byeโ because of the positive feedback and enjoyment of the sign. Last week we explored some of the ways singing is good for your baby and today, we look into the science of how singing, especially as part of a group (such as at our group classes), can have many benefits for YOU. โค๏ธ Singing can give you a โmood boostโ and help with pain relief. Singing causes the release of โhappy hormonesโ, such as dopamine and endorphins, as well as endocannabinoids - a newly discovered class of compounds naturally found in the body and which have similar actions to the active component of the cannabis plant - to give you a true natural high ๐ ๐ Singing can boost your immune system by causing in increase in immunoglobulin A, an antibody that is part of your bodies first line of defence against infection. My Summer term begins NEXT WEEK! So I thought I'd reintroduce myself to new followers. I am originally a Londoner but moved to Buxton in 2021 with my daughter and husband. We absolutely love it here! When we moved here I had already started Sing and Sign with my daughter but had to complete the terms online as there were no classes here. I loved it so much I decided to teach, rather than head back to a life behind my desk. So as a mother of a Sing and Sign baby, I know its value and I really want to pass this onto as many of you as possible. The courses, (whether completed online or in person) are fun, engaging and aimed at specific age groups. There are songs that we all know such as old MacDonald and also original songs and music to help us all learn. The power of music is integral to Sing and Sign. We all love a catchy jingle!
