General #sleep guidelines for the first 3 months. No, your baby won’t do this every single day everyday but if you’re looking for patterns that help your day go a little better, this chart might help! Weeks 0-2: Baby is awake for a maximum of 30 minutes. This is the sleepy newborn stage where most of your newborn’s time awake is spent feeding. You might even have to prompt them to try to wake up during a feed. Weeks 3-8: Awake for a maximum of 45 minutes. You’ll notice baby is more alert as they approach week 8. White noise, babywearing and giving a pacifier to help your baby sleep are all fine to do because at this age your help to get and stay sleep is truly needed. Weeks 8-12: Baby’s awake time is eventually 60 minutes. You might need to help your newborn with napping if they wake up after 10-15 minutes by giving a pacifier or patting. Please know you’re not instilling bad habits. It’s developmentally appropriate that your baby needs a little help because the system that makes melatonin is not mature yet. Weeks 12 – 18: We’re getting to the 90 minutes of awake period! Baby is even more alert and may need help getting and staying asleep. Remember it’s okay to allow baby to play independently in the crib as long as they are happy. If you want them to sleep through the night eventually, there’s no need to rush them out of the crib when they wake up if they’re happy there. Weeks 18 -24: Your infant is awake for 90+ minutes and you’re seeing longer and fewer naps. Naps will vary in length, especially if you’re out and about during the day. It’s maternal mental health week 🫶 I love this awareness week - not because I don’t think mothers’ mental health should be a priority every day of the year - but because it gives us the opportunity for real, honest conversation around our experiences of becoming Mums. The highs, the lows and the bits we maybe haven’t even made sense of yet. A couple of things are worth keeping in mind though, as the cogs of social media start turning on this awareness week: ➡️ While there’s a lot of comfort to be found in knowing that nobody (and I mean - nobody) finds this motherhood business easy, everyone’s experience is individual to them ➡️ Your version of ‘ok’ is different from anybody else’s and there are no rules about what each of us ‘should’ or ‘should not’ be able to cope with ➡️ If you need to reach out for help with your mental wellbeing, you can expect to be treated with kindness and compassion. Even if it’s just reassurance you need, you’re not wasting anyone’s time. You matter and your wellbeing is important. And so we became a family of 6! After a wonderful home birth experience we enjoyed a weekend settling into a new version of family life. This card came up the other day and it's interesting because something that's come up for people in our conversations within pregnancy and postnatal yoga classes is relationships. How we, and some of the people we know, and therefore our relationships with them, change when we become parents (and other life transitions). There are so, so many layers to this. Though one aspect I wanted to touch on is, people are often triggered by other people's huge life events, and project their own discomfort, trauma, emotional immaturity - or other things they need to heal - on to us. It's a defense mechanism. And it can feel hurtful and unsupportive. Which then in turn can make us feel triggered and defensive. Hurt people hurt people. And this is not just about a big "H". A snide remark, judgemental comment, an oversharing, lack of empathy, unwanted advice or even "banter" can change the vibe of a friendship or other relationship for us. And it's not easy or fair. AND, remember it's them not you. If they criticise you for having a baby, or how you parent, it says more about how they are feeling about themselves, their experiences, conditioning or beliefs, than it does about you. Your being pregnant or having a young baby may unsettle them. You are changing. And they are not. It may require boundaries. It may require acceptance. It may require empathy on your part. It may require a break up, or temporary hold on a friendship. It will certainly require a shift. It can definitely help to shift your perspective. When I work 1:1 with clients around challenging relationships, we go through all the layers. And when it comes to moving forward we inevitably shift the approach to coming from a place of love.💜 Empathy, understanding, self compassion and anything that needs to happen off the back of that. You will be better advocate for yourself afterwards. You will feel calmer and have more clarity as a person, friend and parent. You will grow. And maybe the other person will too, or maybe they won't. Maybe you will appreciate them more for their part in your journey til now. Breathe. Embrace the new version of you, the new mama. Be open and live from the💜
