The villains of the South. As I already spoke about Ashton yesterday, let's focus on the men. Justin La Motte. Owner of the plantation "La Résolue". He will become Madeline husband. He's violent, brutal and unpredictable. Beating and abusing Madeleine since their wedding night, he will go as far as to sequester and drug her. He will kill Mama Sally in the process, lady in waiting of Madeleine, she was a freed slave she has known all her life. Her nightmare will end when Orry will come to the rescue, killing La Motte by accident, and freeing Madeleine he will finally marry. Salem Jones is a brute and a sadistic supervisor of slaves at Mont Royal. Flogging nd torturing slaves out of pure evil. But the worse is his habit to abuse the young Semiramis. Hence, Orry will fire him as soon as he will have the power to do so. But he will come back with a vengeance... he won't have the time to savor it though. He will kill by the brave Brett. Last but not least, Elkanah Bent. He's the bastard son of a Senator. And the term bastard is not just a reference to the circumstances of his birth but to his general personality. Cruel, mischievous, sadistic, megalomaniac, revengeful, heartless. Bent is at the very least a sociopath if not even a psychopath. He will met George and Orry at West Point; where bullying them will be his favourite hobby. The two will have him expelled. Bent will swear to have his revenge and, on that, he's a man of his word. He will be the cause of Orry's disability (he's losing the mobility of one of his leg in the serie). I am a music person, so I personally love this photo. But, because I play the piano, I noticed the fact that what Madeline is playing does not line up. She plays the tune lower than it actually is. You can see in the picture that she is down about two octaves below the actual theme. Now, I understand that it isn't exactly easy to line up sounds...especially like this...and please don't think I'm just a picky perfectionist, because trust me, I'm not. I think that "mistake" is just interesting and hard to spot. Now, on the photo matter. In this scene, Madeline is longing for a letter from Orry. Most know what has happened, but in case you don't, I won't spoil anything. Another interesting fact is that this dress is one of very few that is worn more than once. Madeline wears it here and just after Justin takes her back from her sanctuary at Mont Royal. As much as I dislike Justin, I couldn't help but notice that today is David Carradine's birthday. Sadly, he passed away in 2009. Even though Justin was one of the bad guys, his character was quite incredible. He could be the wooing "boyfriend" or he could be the abusive husband. He had so many different sides and could switch just like that *snap*. He may have been the one we all hated because of how cruel he was to everyone, but eventually he paid for it when he was shoved out of a window. I'm posting this at 9:00 for a reason. The very first episode of North and South aired at 9 pm central time on November 3, 1985. 35 years ago. Wow! I may have only known this show for a couple of years, but I have grown to love it, the characters and the actors. It has gotten me through some tough times, introduced me to my favorite books, and my favorite actors and actresses. I love this show so much. It has given me experiences not everyone can know. I thank @terrigarber especially for all the amazing things she has done. Ashton was my favorite character from the beginning because of her rebel side and her amazing looks. Other than that I could never pick. There were those characters that got on my nerves, but the thing about fiction is you love every quirk and habit of every character...even the antagonists. The costumes in this show are a show stopper.
