In contrast to van Beek and Wente Lukas, Fischer writes that they did not only have a profane character: “Casting bag with sliding, overlapping lid. This bag is worn at festivals and is a family treasure.” For Renate Wente-Lukas, 1977. Die Materielle Kultur der Nicht-Islamischen Ethnien von Nordkamerun und Nordost Nigeria,, ill. 83, page 75, they are beautiful everyday objects, appropriate to the leather bags of the Kapsiki, ill. 80/81. Walter van Beek, A touch of wildness: brass and brass casting in Kapsiki, in: Metals in Mandara Mountains, Society and Culture, Edited by Nicholas David, page 306, writes: “Brass objects, known in the tourist trade as “Kapsiki bronzes” are mainly for decoration. Copper is used in its pure form mainly for bracelets, but people prefer the yellow color of brass. Aluminum is also occasionally used for ornaments. In fact, only a limited number of objects is made in brass. They come in three categories, and he assigns this pouch/bag to the first category, that of the exceptional and expensive objects. The illustrations of the bags/pouchs by van Beek and Wente-Lukas (drawn) only show geometric decorations, not zoomorphic representations as in this case. The carrying „cords“ objects depicted there are made of brass ornaments. Nevertheless, I think the object is authentic and interesting. Unfortunately there is little information about it. Finally, we completed our site visit at the Ceramics division. The picture shown is a gasifier stove which is the cleanest burning option to burn solid biomass like maize cobs. In the first 30 minutes of cooking, the maize cob turns to charcoal which burns through for another 15 minutes. The engineers at KIRDI had made a carbonizer which converts rice husks into fertilizer. The food division at KIRDI was one of the busiest. It is split into: honey technology, cereals, fruits, vegetables and roots technology, baking technology and so on... For those that have been dreaming about getting into the healthy juice business, there's a fruit pulper on site. There's also an extruder so you can make your own snacks like ringos. Thought of the peanut butter and the likes business? You'll need a vacuum homogenizer. It uses vacuum technology which ensures the food preserves its nutrients when heated at high temperatures and at high pressure. The temperatures go up to the 142-145 degrees for sterilization. In the baking technology section, there's an industrial oven and a bread proofer. There's also a drier in case one wants to dry then grind their herbs and spices. In case you want to extract oil from sunflower, avocados etc, an oil presser is on site. Our instructor in the food division was one Dr Shadrack. He made a functional food from bio active components in sweet potato leaves. What is a functional food?
