H is for Hockey Foster Hewitt, a famous Canadian Sports Broadcaster, once said that Kirkland Lake was the Town that made the NHL Famous. There have been more than 30 representatives from Kirkland Lake who have made it to the professional stage. From humble beginnings.... Many of our star players learned their skills on the frozen ponds and school yard ice surfaces that could be found all over town. Others had a more serious background with rivalries between the Gold Mines. Many of the Mines had their own soccer, football, and hockey teams. These intermine rivalries were said to be volatile - some saying you could be fired for talking to a player from another team. No Mine affiliated team would be more famous to Kirkland Lake than the Lake Shore Blue Devils - the winners of the 1940 Allan Cup. The Allan Cup was awarded annually to the senior hockey champions in Canada. There was a time when this team would compete at the Olympics, between 1920-1964. The Blue Devils missed out on their chance as the 1940 Olympics were cancelled due to the Second World War. This letterhead from the Del Monico Restaurant features the signatures of players, coaches and a donor - fulfilled at a celebratory dinner for the teams victory. G is for Government Road If Harry Oakes had had his way Main Street would have been the "main street" in town...or so the story goes. Instead Government Road became the primary thoroughfare. Government Road is present all throughout the collection whether it be photographs of the downtown core, business documents or advertisements. These two photographs from our Collection were taken nearly 30 years apart at roughly the same street corner. The first photo shows a group of gentleman lingering on the street. In the center of the photo locally notorious Roza Brown can be seen near the Tip Top Tailors sign. They are preparing to tear down her property at the corner of what would become Market and Government to build the new Kresge's Store. Kresge's opened at this location in 1938 helping to roughly date the photograph. The Goldrange Hotel can be seen on the far right. The second photo shows downtown Government Road. This photo is believed to have been taken during the towns 50th Anniversary in 1969. F is for Food Within the Museum's Collection is a broad spectrum of food related items. This includes but is not limited to Restaurant Menus, Recipe Books, Photographs, Order Books, Signage, etc. In a mining community built up quick, so we're secondary industries such as restaurants, groceries, confectionaries, etc...of which there were many. This menu is for the Paris Lunch, a Kirkland Lake staple from roughly 1937 to 1985. The menu is 9 pages long and has a wide selection of soups, steaks and chops, salads and relishes, vegetable sides, hot roasts and cold meats, fish, hit sandwiches, special three deckers, pastries, hot beverages, and a wide selection of sandwiches. We're curious about the chopped olive sandwich... The most impressive section may be the Fountain Specials - including a huge choice of "Fancy Sundaes", such as Aeroplane, Club House, Monte Carlo, Buster Brown, Lover's Delight and Rosy Cheeks. We fell a little behind being short staffed last week, so we're playing a little catch up with our #ArchivesAtoZ E is for Eaton's This photograph dates back to 1939 and comes from a Kirkland Lake Snapshots photo album from our Collection. The fact that there was a fairly large Eaton's Department Store in our neck of the woods was a pretty big deal at the time. Directly across the street? A Kresge's Store. And further down the road, Woolworth's and a Metropolitan Store. Kirkland Lake was on the map back in the day with a large population with a variety of needs. The First Eaton's Store was a small set up which opened in Toronto in 1869. The company grew exponentially and expanded nationwide in the 1920's and 1930's. Between 1932-1939, Kirkland Lake had a small Eaton's grocery at 27 Proapect Avenue, and later a warehouse at 22 Kirkland Street (1936-1940). The Eaton's many would grow to love and remember was located (as pictured) at 50 Government Road West from 1939-1963. D is for Dairies The Museum has an extensive collection of materials relating to local dairies, everything from milk bottles, milk tokens, photographs and advertisements. A few dairies of note include Dill's, Epplett's, Lindfors', Producers, Palm and Archer's. This photograph of the the Producer's Dairy is believed to be circa the late 1940's, at the Producers Dairy at 131 Pollock Avenue in Kirkland Lake. It opened at this location in 1934. The Dairy was open from roughly 1921 to 1962. It was run by John B Groulx and family. In our Archives we have a hand written history by J.B. Groulx' granddaughter Carole. "In 1924, at the farm 1.5 miles this side of Dane, Mr. & Mrs. Groulx, and their family of eleven, milked 125 cows by hand every morning winter and summer, washed bottles by hand and delivered the milk with the aid of a handful of hired members to surrounding districts by horse drawn wagons and dog teams. By 1931, J. B. bought out Simms Dairy and LA Frances Dairy, two small businesses then established in Kirkland Lake and installed a pasteurizer at the farm because of a septic throat epidemic." In the 1930's a severe septic throat outbreak afflicted the community due to contaminated milk. Nearly 500 people fell ill, and it resulted in three deaths. C is for Charlie's Registers Charlie Chow's name will forever be prominent in Kirkland Lake's History. This innovative entrepreneur immigrated to Canada in 1900 from China, and made the journey North when he saw a need for services in the booming Kirkland Lake Camp. His early restaurant, and later Charlie's Hotel, were popular for out of town guests for quality service and food. Charlie's was equally as popular with locals. In the Museum's Collection, we have Hotel Registers for Charlie's Hotel ranging from 1927 to 1948. Within the pages are traveller's names from all across Northern Ontario, Canada and the United States, and locations around the world. Among them are businessman, investors, and fellow entrepreneurs bringing business to the Kirkland Lake Area. These Registers are often a treasure trove of local advertisements, as well as little notations in the margins asking for meetings, or also may include prices for rooms and telegrams. This little friend here is a rescued juvenile green tree frog that was recently surrendered to Advocates for Northern Animals! 🐸 Frogs can make lovely pets, but wild frogs are experiencing population declines and even extinction due to human encroachment. Adopting a rescue through an animal shelter is one of the most ethical ways to obtain this kind of pet! 🫶🏻 This tree frog requires species-specific care, and anyone interested in adopting should do thorough research to ensure they are able to provide adequate care! 🖤 Maintaining the right environment for this hardy amphibian is not too difficult, but you will need to devote at least an hour each week to clean out their habitat. B is for Bernie's Binders To many in our area, Bernie Jaworsky is a beloved former Science Teacher. Since his retirement in 1998 he has been volunteering at the Museum. He's spent 100's of hours writing and collecting stories, photographs, & articles and placing them in binders that are accessible to the public. While most of our collection can be accessed by the public upon request, Bernie's Binders are located at the Museum's entrance to be perused at ones leisure. There are two types of collections: The Kirkland Lake Book of Fame - these alphabetical binders include newspaper and magazine clippings relating to local individuals. The Kirkland Lake Area Stories include an array of stories new and old relating to the people, places and events surrounding the Kirkland Lake Area.
