From December to April dormant pruning fills the schedule. We were able to prune our Fall Raspberries before the snow arrived. Pruning fall raspberries is definitely the quickest plant to prune. Since we are removing all the canes we can "hedge" them down by a bar mower. The hard work is after mowing, the canes are raked by hand into the alley away from the plant. Once the canes are raked into the alley they can be mulched. Daily farm work is done with a mix of new and old tools, from machinery to hand tools. This Ford 501 bar mower was bought new in the early 40's. The other mower is a special cane shredder made by Rinieri in Italy. It has a hydraulic rotary fingers to pick up the canes into the chopping chamber where there are mulched into fine pieces. #libbyupicks #mainefarms #fordtractors #johndeere #newholland #rinieri
Are we Picking Blueberries in the Snow? Unfortunately no Fresh Frozen Blueberries available 😉 Who has some Blueberries in their freezer? Feels like a great day to make a blueberry crisp or cobbler. Here we are removing Blueberry Stem Gall Wasps. These wasp are very interesting and unique. They are able to make the blueberry plant grow their cocoons called galls. They do not damage the fruit directly. By using the plant as a host, they do damage the individual stem or branch growth. By removing the galls each year we can reduce the damage done. #libbyupicks #mainefarms
The end of Harvest Season brings a close to a chapter but brings another busy time full of farm tasks that need to be completed prior to winter. Many preparations are done to ensure our trees and plants have a healthy rest through dormant season and are ready for another fruitful year. Mowing and Painting into December?!?!? Mowing the fields will help break down leaves for better orchard sanitation and less diseases. Painting of tree trunks helps moderate their temperature reducing diseases, winter injury along with added rodent protection. Fall soil samples are taken in time for proper amendments to be applied. Deer fence repair and maintenance is crucial in keeping the cute bambi's from feasting on the tender apple buds. During the summer months apple trees produce next year's fruit buds. Hungry deer during the winter months can strip entire apple blocks of fruit. Rock picking is synonyms with New England farming. What to do with 20 pounds of Blue Crop blueberries? Here's what I do... Sort, measure (4 cups per blueberry pie), vacuum seal (on "Gentle" to keep them from being crushed), label variety and date, and place them in the freezer. As I've done this each year for the past 3 years, I've been able to have fresh blueberry pies until the next season's crop is ready for harvest. If you're in the area, or willing to make a trip, Libby and Sons is a fantastic place to pick a variety of blueberries, peaches, plums, and a few weeks down the road apples. After Harvest on the Farm it may seem to be a down or slow time but the work never ends. It's actually a very busy time for field work. Time is short both in daylight and rushing to beat 'Old Man Wintah. We finished up a new fence section project just in time before the December storm delivered us 30" of snow. The previous ice storm damaged the old section of deer fence beyond repair. New 12' posts and 1000' of 8' deer fence was installed in its place.
