Receiving the news that you have ALS can feel like a seismic shift in your life. It’s a moment that can be overwhelming, filled with a flood of emotions ranging from shock and disbelief to fear and sadness. It’s okay to feel all of these emotions and to give yourself the time and space to process them. Remember that while ALS brings immense challenges, it doesn’t define you. You are still the same person with hopes, dreams, and a unique journey ahead. Lean on your support system, take things one day at a time, and know that there are resources and communities available to help you navigate this new chapter of your life. #alsawareness #als #alsadvocates #hope #joy #cure #alswarrior #alsiseverywhere #alsiseverywhere #icebucketchallenge #alsresearch #lougehrig #lougehrigsdiseasesucks #lougehrigday #motorneurondisease #mnd @rainerh1962 @stelgkamp @imdyingtotellyoupodcast @heralsstory @iamalsorg @als @livinginyellow @team_donovan_cincy @als.advocacy @dellalarsensclasstpt

Fundraising for the ALS Association is a big deal for us... We want to invite all of you to join us on June 2nd as we fundraise for a cause that is near and dear to our hearts. In 2021, Major League Baseball announced that June 2nd will hereby be known as “Lou Gehrig Day". The annual, league-wide event will be a time not only to honor and celebrate the legacy of the Hall of Fame first baseman but to raise awareness and funds to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the awful disease that ended Gehrig’s life and informally bears his name. Often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Those afflicted lose their ability to walk, talk, eat and, eventually, breathe. ALS can affect anyone, anywhere, at any time, and, while scientists are making some strides in understanding the disease and potential treatments, there is no cure. The average life expectancy after diagnosis with ALS is only 2 to 5 years. We would love for you to join us on Sunday, June 2nd for our 4th annual Lou Gehrig Day at Blue Barn to benefit the ALS Association. Last year, with our community's help we were able to donate $10,000 to the ALS Association. This year we are hoping to donate even more! Mark your calendars, and stay tuned for more details! ⚾️ Not sure you can attend, but feel led to make a donation to support our cause? There are moments in sports that will never be forgotten. Certainly those moments are goals scored, baskets made, and record times set at crucial moments in a playoff or Olympics. But... there are also those incredible moments at any level of sports where triumph over tragedy shines a light on not the skill of an athlete but their character. On July 4th, 1939, Lou Gehrig had one of those moments, when at a packed Yankee Stadium he announced his retirement from the game he loved because of an ALS diagnosis. Like so many of the people we are privileged to serve Mr. Gehrig believed that life was a gift; and that he was grateful. "So I close in saying that I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for." 2024 is the 85th Anniversary of that iconic speech and the ALS Society of New Brunswick & Nova Scotia is looking for help in celebrating the incredible spirit people living with ALS and their families live with every day. In 2021 Major League Baseball established June 2nd as Lou Gehrig day. The ALS Society is looking for members of teams from all leagues to take the field for 15 minutes on June 2nd, and choose a “Lou Gehrig” to read that iconic speech, video the moment and post it on the team’s social media platforms, sharing it with the ALS Society. Wouldn’t it be amazing to get a movement like this going across the country on June 2nd? Imagine the lessons young players could receive about life? Imagine the hope! And what awareness we could create together. If you are interested in helping the ALS Society with this awesome project, please contact Trey at [email protected] or Kimberly Carter at [email protected]. #LouGehrigsDisease #LouGehrigDay #ALSCommunity

This picture was 2 years ago today in Costa Rica. I know most people are thinking oh so cute, pretty background, what a fun time etc... but I have talked to few ALS people and we almost all say it is hard to look back on I call it "pre me" . Me without ALS. It brings up lots of emotions. To me this picture means so much. I look at it and think so many things. It brings so many emotions joy, freedom, strength, love, heart break, gut wrenching, hope, frustration, weakness, cheerful, determination and really I could keep going on. I was standing and not only standing but was able to pick up my babies. Not only that but have the balance and strength to hold my phone, my son and walk. I will cherish this picture that I was able to take myself with him forever and always! #als #alscaregivers #alsstory #heralsstory #alssurvivor #alsawareness #alscure #cureals #alsnewstoday #iamals #lougehrigdisease #lougehrigday

In 1942, Frank Graham immortalized Lou Gehrig with the iconic book "Lou Gehrig: A Quiet Hero." In a touching moment captured on film, Graham’s son, Frank Graham Jr., is sporting Gehrig's Yankee cap, showcasing the deep admiration passed from father to son. Reflecting on the encounter with his idol, he humorously recalled being struck by the observation that Gehrig's head seemed oddly smaller than his own. 📷: Bookbid Rare Books #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankees #frankgraham

Later in Lou’s career, timid young players new to the team often found comfort in Gehrig, a man who stood in their shoes just a few years prior. While some of the seasoned players would tease the newcomers, Gehrig embraced them by becoming a mentor and guide. For example, Frankie Crosetti reflected on joining the Yankees in 1932, "I was very quiet, you know. I never opened my mouth. Before his baseball career exploded, Lou Gehrig attended Columbia University to study engineering. When asked why he decided to abandon his intent to pursue the subject further, he replied, "There's no getting away from it, a fellow has to eat. At the end of my sophomore year my father was taken ill and we had to have money. I had been playing on the college ball team and I had had eight offers to join professional clubs. So when there was no money coming in there was nothing for me to do but sign up." 📷: Columbia University #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankees

In 1929, during the baseball off-season, we catch a glimpse of Lou Gehrig in a different setting—working at the Appensellar, Allen and Hill stockbrokers’ office. Gehrig had an eye on a potential career shift into the finance world once his baseball journey concluded. #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankees

On Aug. 17, Lou Gehrig made history by stepping onto the field for his 1,308 consecutive game in St. Louis against the Browns, shattering the previous record held by Everett Scott, the former shortstop for both the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Gehrig received a trophy before commencing the game that would etch his name in the record books. From left to right: William Harridge, the President of the American League; E.G. It's hard to explain how I once felt like I could control my life and be able to do it all for my family to slowly losing the ability to do things for my children and how it feels as a mother to 4 beautiful little humans who rely on you to take care of them when you now really only have the strength and energy to putt around the house. Unfortunately even cleaning up my house is getting more and more difficult. It has been about 2 month now that I am no longer really able to drive. To have to be taken everywhere. I feel like a child asking to be picked up and it SUCKS! I LOVED to drive. I miss it deeply. The freedom to be able to drive is like like winning a million bucks. I have been mourning the loss of the independence that ALS takes from you this last week and to know it's only getting worse is definitely a mind game. I try to take in every moment on the days that I get to get a ride to go get my children from school. I miss picking them up from school. Seeing their backpacks as big as them as they try to pile in the car and be so excited to tell you what happened at school that day. This was us waiting in the walk up line. I was so happy to be able to go get my girls from school this last week. It was my first time getting them this year and it was wonderful. Give it up for 100 years of Gehrig Greatness! A century ago, Lou Gehrig took his first swing toward legendary status by hitting his first ever MLB home run against the Boston Red Sox on September 27, 1923. Fifteen years later, he ended his baseball career with 493 home runs in a game against the Washington Senators. 📷: Sports Illustrated #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankee

One hundred years ago today, Lou Gehrig got his first ever start ever at first base thanks to Yankees Manager Miller Huggins. At 20 years old, he had only played in a handful of games before this moment. “He went for 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI, the first two of his career. Said hit was also his first career major league home run when he drove home Babe Ruth with a two-run shot in the first inning. Including that game, Gehrig went 9-for-19 in four starts to wrap up his short rookie season. He finished 1923 with a 1.234 OPS, showing a sign of what was still to come in his career,” according to Pinstripe Alley. 📷: Baseball Hall of Fame #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankees

Can you believe one of the most famous speeches in baseball history almost never happened? After being diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig made the difficult decision to retire from baseball. To celebrate the player, the Yankees honored him with a ceremony on July 4, 1939. Although Gehrig initially declined to speak, with encouragement from the fans and Yankees manager Joe McCarthy, he decided to step up to the microphone. What followed was a heartfelt speech that left an indelible mark on the world of sports and beyond. His “Luckiest Man” speech serves as a testament to his resilience and the power of the human spirit. 📷: Baseball Hall of Fame #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankees #luckiestman

Gehrig’s secret dream? To swing into action as Tarzan on the big screen 🌿🦍 Gehrig’s agent originally pitched the idea as a way to break him out of his shell. Gehrig was all in, and he even posed for these publicity pictures in a leopard Tarzan outfit. Sadly Hollywood passed on him, claiming they “thought his legs were too muscular.” Instead, the iconic role went to Olympic swimming champion Johnny Weissmuller. 📷: 1 - Acme News Photos #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankees #tarzan

Lou Gehrig, along with Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, are the 3 players in the history of MLB who have days set aside to honor their contributions. Their statues are also the unofficial greeters at the Baseball HoF . Why does Lou’s legacy endure? - Greatness. He’s 3rd all-time in OPS and Slugging % (5th in OPS+), has 3 of the 6 highest season RBI totals, is the all-time 1st baseman WAR leader, won 7 World Series, and with The Babe formed probably the greatest duo in American sports. - Toughness/Dependability. The Iron Horse played in 2,130 straight games (pre modern medicine). They don’t make ‘em like that any more. - Courage in the Face of Adversity. “Luckiest Man”, indeed 🎙️ - Likability. “There was absolutely no reason to dislike him, and no one did.” - Fred Lieb, sportswriter. “Lou was the kind of boy that if you had a son, he’s the kind of person you’d like your son to be.” - teammate, Sam Jones A key collecting goal for me this year was to complete the ‘33 & ‘34 Goudey Gehrig quartet. To me they’re the most attractive of Gehrig’s cards, and beautifully capture his persona - front and back. I’m inspired by these cards & honored to be their caretaker. #thehobby #sportscards #whodoyoucollect #whatdoyoucollect #lougehrig #ironhorse #lougehrigday #goudeycards

Originally published in 1976, the book “My Luke and I” by Eleanor Gehrig and Joseph Durso expands upon Lou and Eleanor’s eight years of marriage that was cut short by Lou’s diagnosis. Their first six years together were full of excitement with Eleanor being given the title as “First Lady of the Yankees” after traveling with the baseball team. The two years that followed were filled with fear of the unknown and bravery by both the Gehrig’s. 📷: 1 - Everett, 2 - Etsy #lougehrigday #lougehrigdisease #als #alsassociation #baseball #baseballlegend #sports #baseballplayer #mlb #majorleaguebaseball #yankees #newyorkyankees #eleanorgehrig
