PLACE: For anyone who works full time, @_luckykwong is an enigma. Open from 11-2.30 Mon-Fri, it is an elusive gem (regularly recommended by THE @nigellalawson) and we pounced on the opportunity to visit when they were open for a rare dinner during Winter Solstice. Lucky Kwong is a manicured, modern fitout composed of steel and cork elements sitting within the original locomotive workshop of South Eveleigh. The fitout is fresh, bright and respects the heritage surrounding it. New within the old, a gesture the architecture embraces throughout. The open kitchen shares the dining space and dynamic activity complements the uncluttered design of the restaurant. Shoutout to the leafy-shaped golden 'LK' logo on approach that adds an air of delicacy and curvature to the rigid, industrial forms of the building. PLATE: The sharing set menu included some of Lucky Kwong's regular lunchtime items with some special events boosted with native Australian ingredients. This fusion of these ingredients was not overpowering, and acted in harmony with the dishes of Cantonese heritage. Our personal standouts were the scallop dumplings with a plate-lickingly good sichuan chilli dressing and the home-style XO fried eggs. What a crunch! Caramelised pork belly with Davidson's plum was an unexpected duo with a striking flavour we could not resist. Servings were generous. TL;DR: Cannot wait to go for lunch! Absolutely up there on Sydney's must visit list.

‘I first met Kylie at some Christmas markets in South Eveleigh in 2022, through @_studio_a_,’ says Catherine McGuiness, a two-time Archibald finalist who paints at the studio. ‘Kylie came to the fair and she bought one of my artworks. I really liked meeting her because she’s a lovely person.' @kylie_kwong, Australian–Cantonese chef, restaurateur, author and television presenter, is the subject of McGuiness's #ArchibaldPrize portrait this year. ‘Kylie has a restaurant called Lucky Kwong,' says McGuiness. 'She’s always cooking food in the kitchen! I met Kylie in her restaurant to do some sketches of her. The sun was bright on the windowsill. ‘Kylie showed me some special objects in her restaurant that you can see in my painting – the singing bowl, the bird on the windowsill, and the two red-and-gold urns. ‘I’ve painted Kylie wearing her favourite necklace and her round glasses. She always wears black. Lucky Kwong, Eveleigh, Sydney - A gorgeous lunch with my honey bee, who is sadly leaving me at work, to do greater things. She suggested Lucky Kwong, and it was an immediate yes! The prawn wontons came in a gorgeous tangy and sweet broth with a hint of heat. And I’m not really a prawn girl, but these were perfect little parcels. The home style fried eggs with XO sauce was just, omg. I should’ve ordered a bowl of rice to go with it. And then the egg noodles with a caramelised brisket - divine! Sweet and succulent fine beef, over a fine chow mein, with that nutty and slightly smokey flavour. So happy to have had this lunch with my girl who I will miss seeing every day. Side note, this is one of Nigella’s favourite haunts in Sydney - I cannot believe it took me so long to get here.
