Salt, Narooma, NSW For those who know me well, know that Narooma is my most loved place in Australia. I want to settle down here. I want to have my retirement home here. I have lost track of the number of times I have visited over the years. Sometimes, there are places that appeal to you, and you just keep coming back. Anyways, we decided to do Glamping at Discovery Parks, Narooma. The first time we were in a holiday park. On Sunday morning, I woke up early and went for the sunrise photography to the Narooma beach and the Glasshouse Rock. It's just amazing and serene to see the su rise, the birds and the untouched beach, and seeing how the world gradually wakes up. Decided to grab a coffee and went to check out Salt, which to me was a new place. I was perhaps coming after 3 years. The coffee was strong and great, but the brekkie menu caught my attention. Went back to the holiday park, got the family packed up, and drove back to Salt for brekkie. We ordered a Deluxe Bacon & Egg Roll..the menu said Rapley & Son’s smokey bacon ∙ Egan’s Farm egg ∙ rocket ∙ homemade tomato relish ∙ Kewpie mayo. It was delicious. Also ordered the chicken toastie. Japanese marinated chicken ∙ wombok slaw ∙ maple furikakemayo. Again, it was superb and delicious. I just loved the sandwich and the combination. There was a mango and lime soda , which was great, and there was a fresh juice of watermelon ginger lemon, which was simply refreshing. The back of the cafe has a wooden area over the water to sit and savour the views and devour the awesome food. 💥🩷New Recipe: Burmese Hpaluda (Falluda)🩷💥 When I first moved to Sydney many years ago, I lived in a suburb that was (and still is) the city’s bohemian epicentre. Aside from the rich diversity of its community it also had a fabulous diverse food scene, where you could choose from a huge array of restaurants serving food from around the world. One of my favourite restaurants was simply called “Rangoon”. This beautifully decorated, humble, family run restaurant introduced me to the cuisine of Burma (Myanmar), the lightly spiced curries, tea leaf salads, and fragrant soups. It is also where I first discovered this refreshing milk based drink / dessert, hpaluda. A very similar drink is a popular Indian treat known as falluda, however as there is no “f” spoken in Myanmar, the Burmese version is called hpaluda. The drink actually originated in Iran, where a similar version, faloodey, is still popular. ❓So, what’s in it? There are various versions, but the ingredient unique to Myanmar is the addition of custard flan (which I used) or even bread pudding. (The Indian version uses vermicelli instead). Along with this, other ingredients include: rose syrup, tapioca pearls, strawberry jelly, basil seeds, milk and icecream. Fruit is often added also, and the mango version is divine as well. For my version here, as I’m not a big fan of basil seeds, I left them out. It is a most refreshing and delightful dessert / drink that I really love. Santa Fe Mexican Restaurant, Merrimbula, NSW It was a glorious Saturday. Merrimbula is a beautiful holiday destination on the Sapphire coast. The raging sea, the placid lakes with yesterday farms and paddle boarding, is just relaxing to watch. After half a day with my son at the beach, park, and playarwas, we were starving.we drove up to the main market area of the town. 5 years back, when we were here, we saw Santa Fe but never checked it out. This time, we checked it out. We order the chicken nachos, chicken wings, and a cheese quesedilla for my son. It was a lunch date. The chicken nachos were great. The chicken seemed to be slow cooked and full of flavours. You can't go wrong with the sour cream, avocado, fresh salsa cheese, and corn chips. The chicken wings were ok but didn't win our hearts. It was coated in a hot sauce, but perhaps the salt was missing. Overall, we liked coming here. Located on the first floor, you need to access it via stairs. The owner couple were very friendly, and they let us in even after the kitchen had closed. The views are superb, overlooking the lake. Bodalla Dairy Shed, Bodalla, NSW This is another highly recommended stop as we travel down the south coast. While there are many cheese factories across Australia, what sets this one apart is the use of Australian Bush into the cheese. There is Cheddar with the following combinations. 1. Chilli and wattleseed. 2. Outback Saltbush 3. Gum Leaf smoked for 8 hours 4. Queensland Lemon Myrtle 5. Tasmanian Pepperberry The only softcheese they have is bushtucker cheese. There is also a smoked Haloumi as well. I ended up getting the soft cheese and a multi pack with all the other flavours. You can also stop here and get a milkshake or an ice cream. I recall many years back that they used to do a talk in the afternoon and the cheese making process. A gracious old lady, probably the owner, used to do a very informative talk. Berry Donut Van, Berry, NSW South Coast NSW is the most picturesque region for a road trip. And the first pit stop is at Berry. I am sure I have written about the Berry Donut Van before as well, but here we go again. We started off at 7.30 A.M. on ANZAC day and reached Berry at approx 9.45 A.M. the Donut Van opens at 10. I was, fortunately, there 3rd on the line. Within 15 minutes, there was a long line. I got a set of 6 Cinnamon donuts, which were fresh and delicious. Pinky Ji Sydney Wali, Sydney, NSW Well, this is a late post. Few friends and ex team mates decided to catch up, and we picked up Pinky Ji Sydney Wali as the venue for our lunch ch catch-up. I was keen to see what the hype is all about. Every instagram influencer has been making reels and looked very interesting. To begin with, the restaurant is located in a basement. It is colourful, and the ambience is interesting but very thematic. As expected, you have pink walls and loads of flower decorations from the ceiling. Feels a bit like ur in a doll house. For lunch, you have a short menu with a very limited selection of ala carte, and the central order for lunch is the thali. We ordered a Tandoori chicken to begin with. I expected a colour laden with bone chook, but this was a boneless portion with a good marination. The chicken was soft, and it was delicious. Next, we ordered the thali. The thali had butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, daal makhani, boondi raita with basmati rice, and a naan. The butter chicken was a bit too sweet, to be honest. The lamb curry wasn't that great and a bit gamey. The dal makhani was again just average and lacked the buttery depth of flavour. The naan was crisp, and the rice was as expected. For $25, this thali is great value. However, I wasn't too impressed with the taste of the curries at all. West Albury Quik Stop, Albury, NSW We were on our last leg of the journey from Albury to Sydney. Stopped over at the servo to get fuel and couldn't help.noticing the number of people who went into the eatery and came out with food packs. Intrigued, I decided to check it out. Ordered a fish and chips, turned out pretty descent. A big fillet of hake and solid chips. What else do you need for a surf and turf or a road trip! #foodiechatter
Sunday Lunch.. Navratras finished this week. Full 9 days of fasting, and after that, you gotta redeem yourself. Mangshor jhol bhaat! Mutton curry with potatoes and rice, cooked by @mrs_foodiechatter .. It was out of the world, and the siesta that followed was priceless.. #foodiechatter
The Grumpy Baker, Bilpin, NSW After our visit to the pie in the sky, we drove further on the Bells Line of Road to the Grumpy Baker. Well, to begin with, my wife loved the name and said there is one thing common in me and this bakery.. and that's being Grumpy! The reason we were here was the apple pie. At 2.30 P.M. the apple pies were already sold off for the day. Perhaps an eloquent testimony of how good and popular the apple pie must be. Well, I could see loads of sourdough on display, some pies, some tarts and all. I opted for a chocolate croissant, a chocolate tart, and a Cinnamon cronit with nuttella. The tart and cronut were that good that I went and ordered another set. We got a pplie pie which we can bake at home. Will post once we have tried it out. The pie menu seemed interesting. There was a moroccan lamb, chicken harissa, and Hungarian goulash. Seemed interesting and noted that we have to visit here the next time and try out the pies. I did see a set of pie beings pulled out of the overnight, but the flaky pastry was nowhere near what we had at the pie in the sky. However, I will visit here again soon! #foodiechatter @grumpybaker
Charlie's Pizzeria & Bakery, Cantebury, NSW I just woke up and thought I'd take the family out for breakfast. Decided to visit Charlie Pizzeria & Bakery at Cantebury. I have been coming here for many years now. The reason why I love this place is because they bake the pies, shanklish, kishk, and wraps are all freshly baked. There is a very interesting story on how I found this place. Some 10 or 12 years back, my friend @pg_photografix and I had come across an offer for $1 camera being sold at the Digital Camera warehouse at Cabtebury Road We had woken up at 5 a.m. in the peak winters and took a cab, and came to the DCW shop, only to find a long queue. Apparently. People had camped overnight. We didn't get the camera, but afterwards we were hungry and we just started walking and stumbled on this place. Anyways, since then, this has been a place we visit every now and then. Today, we ordered the chicken cheese and garlic pie, which is baked fresh. It's piping hot and delicious. Next, we ordered at haloumi Cheese Pie, which was very unlike what I expected. The filling didn't seem to be haloumi, but it felt like cottage cheese, onions filling. Again, it's delicious. The spinach mushroom tomato cheese chilli pie was another one we tried. It was perhaps the least fav for me. Too much spinach, I reckon. The cheese and bacon pie was freshly baked and simple and yet lovely. While waiting, I saw someone else get a small veggie pizza and looked so tempting that I ordered one. Again, freshly baked and delicious. All in all, a weekends gotta be relaxing and indulgent. Pie In The Sky, Bilpin, NSW The pie detectives were put again this weekend. Seems we have developed a fascination for the Blue Mountains this year, especially when it rains. We started the day thinking we would head out to a Lebanese Bakery in Cantebury for brekkie. The day was beautiful, and then we decided how about picking up the brekkie and going to a park. By the time we reached the door of our house, the plan was to pick up brekkie and drive to Central Coast. Unfortunately, at Centenury, it started drizzling, and we decided it's better to head up to the Blue Mountains. Now we have been quite a few times recently. So I decided to go up to Richmond, drive past the airforce base, and then onto the Bells Line of Road. Stopped at Pie in the Sky and again quite a rush in the little shop. In the last few months, we have had mostly horrible pies in the Blue Mountain area. This, however, looked really tempting. The base looked firm, and the pastry on top looked buttery and flaky! That's a good start. I ordered at Butter Chicken pie. When I took the pictures and settled to savour, it turned out to be the lamb pie. The filling was caramelised onion and lamb and tasted nice. I went back and exchanged for the butter chicken pie. The pie was delicious. Generous chunks of chicken in a butter chicken gravy. The base was firm and yet perfectly brittle and crumbly. The top was beautifully flaky. The only thing I could think of was that the butter chicken was slightly gelatinous. However, I loved the pie over all and would be stopping here for sure the next time I pass this place. @pieintheskyroadhousebilpin
