Celebrating 2024 visual studies thesis student @hannwheelerart! Her thesis exhibition entitled, “Unearthing: A Dual Exploration of Art and Science”, digs into the art and science of making pottery. She traveled to a few nearby clay sources to collect samples and performed folk pottery material tests to learn about their qualities on an experiential level. She also partnered with labs at Harvard to perform complex scientific tests on them to see how the data compare. Hannah writes, “I was impassioned by the idea of creating ceramic art with a material that I collected and processed myself and planned a thesis that would document my entire creative process. However, I was also innately curious about what that clay was made of and how I could include an element that focused on the environmental and geological perspective of ceramics. Fundamentally, I sought to understand the process of gathering and exploring ceramic material. Ceramics is an inherently unsustainable process. As a ceramic artist, it is a reality that you have to face. But, if you can not bear to give ceramics up - just as I can’t - one thing you can do is better understand the impact and resources that it requires. Some great news! Two of my vases, “Summer Shower” and “Night Sky” were accepted in the juried Sea and Sky Art Show. Each piece starts on the potter’s wheel and is then layered, and layered again, with multiple paper forms and colorful underglazes. The paper is peeled and the design is revealed. Stencils and sgraffito carving are added at the end to bring more balance, depth, and movement to the final design. The opening reception is tonight from 5-8 pm at the Hull Lifesaving Museum. The show will be open for several weeks, so be sure to stop by to see my work and that of dozens of other artists.

These cups were nearly identical going into the Naborigama kiln. I put one into the wood chamber, the other into wood and soda. What a difference! The dark stripes are clay with black mason stain added. I had never combined clay like this before. I'll definitely do more. Wood fired ceramic rock. The outside of this piece was not glazed before firing. The colors and sheens are all from the firing process. The splash is where the flames raced past and deposited ash. The Chelsea Keramic Art Works in Chelsea, Massachusetts only produced wares for about sixteen years, so their pieces are few and far between. Check out the East-meets-West aesthetic of this circa 1880 tea set, which includes a teapot, covered sugar bowl, and two cups and saucers. Artist Highlight The Mill District Local Art Gallery is thrilled to highlight Kaitlin Scutari of Orange, MA. Born and raised in Western Massachusetts, Kaitlin’s romance with clay started when she was in 6th grade and continued throughout high school where she was exposed to a more generous curriculum. These classes eventually influenced her decision to become an art educator through UMass Amherst in 2006, where she earned her degree. In 2008, Kaitlin had her first of three children. This shifted her focus from ceramics to teaching. In 2016, after the last of her children was born, her passion for the craft was revived. She started taking classes again, bought a wheel, and now has a studio where she teaches pottery professionally. Kaitlin’s contemporary work has been sold in stores and displayed both online and in galleries. Come in to the gallery to view Kaitlin's work in person.
