Happy Saturday. I’m catching up on Coloricombo/Coloriflori and this is a beautiful combo from week 15 featuring my favourite colour blue, as well as flowers for the Coloriflori theme. 💙Coloricombo is run by the superbly talented @estemacleod, and the pallete taken from a painting from the Russian artist Natalia Goncharova(1881-1962). Another fascinating artist I did not know about. She was part of the Russian Avant Garde, and famous in her own right in her lifetime, which was very unusual for female artists in the 20th century. Even so, one of her works was misattributed to her husband for over 50 years. Drawing with a Pentel aquash water brush pen filled with Lamy fountain pen ink, and a cheap Pilot Kakuno fountain pen with the same ink 🖋️ After listening to a Tim Ferriss podcast with Neil Gaiman, talking about the joy of writing with a fountain pen, I jumped on this advice and haven’t looked back. I write ideas, notes, stories, everything first in fountain pen and paper and then later type up (Neil calls this part editor mode, where you cull and critique stuff on paper and put it into the word document). Ideas flow freely, words dance across the page. So after recently getting stuck trying to draw final art on my iPad (for the CYA comp), and hating everything I was drawing, I remembered to go back to playing and just doing things that are joyful. So these pictures are a continuation of that. I think I need to draw bigger with the water brush pen! My perfectionist side is trying to get me not to share this but I’m going to do it anyway. What do you draw or write with? How do your ideas best flow out? PS. A couple of weeks back, while out for a walk, my mind was buzzing with ideas for a new illustration project. I felt like I had a solid concept, but I was still trying to figure out the best approach. It was like all these thoughts were trapped inside a jar, just ready to burst out. Well here goes... a photo of myself😬 = terror. This is just in case you wanted to see the person behind the illustrations and greeting cards that I keep putting out. Yes, I am that cliche artist who hides behind their artwork, but I understand that people are curious about who is creating all this. So here I am. . I have always enjoyed drawing, especially as a teenager and I only got back into fashion illustration about 10 years ago when I felt that I needed to have a creative outlet and now I can't imagine doing anything else. 💜 A childhood memory of the amazement felt in the first thing I ever learned to cook, taught by my Nanny - it was actually béchamel sauce from scratch, so I could add heaps of cheese and eat it with cauliflower, but in this picture it’s bread dough.
