Hubert “Hubie” Brooks (11/24/1956-) selected third overall in the 1978 draft by the Mets, Brooks went on to play for five different clubs, spanning over 15 years. Brooks was called up in 1980 and quickly became a fan favorite in New York. Winning the starting position of third baseman in 1981. Brooks would end up finishing third in ROY voting, coming behind Fernando Valenzuela and Tim Raines. During his rookie season, he had a BA of .307 and tied a unique record of committing three errors in one inning. In the ‘84 season, Brooks would set a franchise record with a 24-game hitting streak that would later be tied by Mike Piazza in 1999. Eight years later, Brooks’ record would be broken by David Wright (26 games) and later with Moises Alou (30 games) in 2007. In 1984 he would be traded to the Montreal Expos where he would continue to find success with two All-Star selections and two Silver Slugger awards. Brooks would continue to play until 1994. At the time of his retirement, Brooks was the only active major league leader in games played without making it to the postseason (1,645). 17 years ago today, Endy Chavez robbed Scott Rolen in Game 7 of the NLCS which would become not only the best catch/play in Mets history but also the best catch/play in playoff history.
