The penultimate movie in the Infinity Saga was “Avengers: Infinity War” which released wide #OTD. The F C A arrived in Leamington in 1940 following the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Nazis. The four-thousand military personnel were based in and around the town for two years. Their headquarters were in Harrington House, now demolished, a large Victorian villa a few yards from the park gates in Newbold Terrace. While based in mid-Warwickshire, a small number of specially selected Czechoslovak Warrant Officers were sent to Arisaig in Western Scotland to be trained as paratroop agents by the British Special Operations Execuive (SOE). After a very rigorous training course, they formed a select group of men who were on standby to be parachuted into occupied Czechoslovakia to carry out sabotage missions and to support the Czechoslovak Underground movement. On April 27, 1799, a violent storm moved through Virginia’s Northern Neck and across the Potomac River in Southern Maryland. While the storm hit Westmoreland County, Virginia, where the modern-day site of George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located, it was especially horrific in the adjacent King George County. Newspapers reported that “several people, as well as horses and cattle” were killed, while many houses were “blown down, and trees torn up by the roots.” The winds were so powerful that carts were carried by the wind for 150 yards and dashed to pieces. #OTD in 1923 – Éamon de Valera announces end of operations against the Irish Free State, effectively ending the Irish Civil War. Éamon de Valera offered terms for negotiation to end the war which were rejected. But time was running out for the anti-Treaty side and on 24 May, de Valera issued the order to dump arms. In doing so he declared: “Soldiers of the Republic, Legion of the Rearguard… Military victory must be allowed to rest for the moment with those who have destroyed the Republic” but added “other means must be sought to safeguard the nation’s right”.
