#onthisday 28 April 1442 King Edward IV was born Edward of York was born at Rouen in France, the second son of Richard, 3rd Duke of York (who had a strong genealogical claim to the throne of England), & Cecily Neville. He was the eldest of the four sons who survived to adulthood. His younger brother Edmund, Earl of Rutland, died along with his father at Wakefield on 30 December 1460. Edward IV was the King of England from 4 March 1461 until 3 October 1470, & again from 11 April 1471 until his death in 1483. He was the first Yorkist King of England. The first half of his rule was marred by the violence associated with the Wars of the Roses, but he overcame the Lancastrian challenge to the throne at Tewkesbury in 1471 to reign in peace until his sudden death. Before becoming king, he was 4th Duke of York, 7th Earl of March, 5th Earl of Cambridge & 9th Earl of Ulster. He was also the 65th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Edward IV married Elizabeth Woodville in 1464, they had ten children. ____ #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #d28apr #EdwardIV #KingEdwardIV #KingofEngland #houseofyork #houseofplantagenet #Plantagenet #ElizabethWoodville #History #RoyaltyinArt #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #otd #KingofEngland #historyinpictures #Yorkists #Rouen #theking #Monarch #Monarchy #MedievalHistory #medieval #kingandqueen #englishhistory

Katie Taylor unified the WBA and IBF women's lightweight titles with a 10 round unanimous decision over Victoria Noelia Bustos in Brooklyn, New York #OnThisDay in 2018. Fighting in only her ninth professional bout, Taylor, 2012 Olympic gold medalist and multiple-time AIBA champion, used her skill and physical talent to outmaneuver Bustos throughout the fight. Taylor consistently popped Bustos' head back with cleaner punches in the first half of the fight and beyond. The Bray, Ireland fighter let her output drop slightly in the middle rounds, but it wasn't until round 8 that Bustos got much going offensively. Taylor slugged with the Argentine in the final round, bringing the crowd to its feet. Bustos' late effort was admirable, but not enough, and Taylor earned a unanimou decision and a new belt, and stayed undefeated. "I'm so happy right now, it's always been my dream to unify," Taylor said. "It was a tough contest, I had to work for every second and I had to be sharp. I had to be clever from the start, she was a good counter puncher and came on strong at the end, I think I mixed it up well. She just kept coming, I was prepared for a tough 10 rounds, I have to thank my whole team for the preparations, we had a great camp. There's probably a bit too much fight in me but it's great to entertain the fans. I'm there to fight anyone, I'm lucky to have some great champions in my division and I want all the belts." #boxing #history #boxeo #boxe #boxen #historia #oldschool #vintage #throwback #classic #boxingheads #boxinglife #boxingtraining #boxinggym #sports #legend #legendary #katietaylor #ourkatie #womensboxing #Ireland #bray #otd

April 28, 1838 "with me my niece Miss Walker and 2 servants" Saturday 28 April 1838 7 ¾ 2 40/.. fine but dull morning F42° at 9 and breakfast in about ¾ hour and then had William Mallinson and paid him for spouts at Little marsh, and had Mr. Bollard a civil young man (Ironmonger) about his bill from last midsummer to Xmas [Christ] – told him to make it out again in 3 – for Northgate Shibden hall and Little marsh – all this took me till 10 5/.. – then off with A- to Landymere – she rode and I walked by her side as far as the Lodge, she then road forwards and I stood a few minutes with Mr. Gray and Robert Mann who had proposed making the 3 large oblong sandstones do the draw-wall – Mr. Gray sketched and Roberts’ idea, and we were all satisfied – ordered to be done – at Landymere by the old Northowram road in ½ hour – found A- and SW. and Mr. Bentley – SW set out 1200 yards 30 yards along the hollow at 27ft. from the fence x 40 up the hill (including the present quarry hole) at 4ft. from the fence between the Sutherlands’ and Mesdames Lancashire and Brook – Bentley to come on Monday at 4 p.m. to sign the rough draft of the agreement – terms explained to him and SW. 1200 yards as above named at 8d. per ft. of good stone – 8ft. thick? or 9ft. at present? – but no matter if thicker or thinner paid for at 9d. – the whole to be paid for in 3 years by equal ½ yearly payments – or rather 400 yards per annum to be paid for – and 4 years allowed to get it in – Road to the new road to be £5 per annum whether in one place or other – SW. to come on Tuesday and the site of the road to be settled – SW. did not think the little hole Joseph Mann is sinking, too high up in the field – 8 yards deep at present and only got down to the Crooked stone – the same beds (there will be 2) as Mrs. Aspinalls’ and Mr. Listers’ – not Bentley’s bed – A- then rode off to Holcans wood, and I walked by Wester croft and David Booths’ and Hipperholme to Hove edge to Messrs. On this Day in Videogame History 28/04/01 🇯🇵 "Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is a 2001 racing simulation video game developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. It is the third installment in the Gran Turismo series. During its demonstration at E3 2000 and E3 2001, the game was known under the working title Gran Turismo 2000. With previous titles being developed for the original PlayStation, Gran Turismo 3 marked the series' first foray into the sixth generation of video game consoles. Originally slated for a 2000 release as a launch title for the PlayStation 2, the game's development primarily focused on taking advantage of the console's newfound hardware capabilities. While compromising on the number of available vehicles (180, as opposed to 650 in Gran Turismo 2), the game was a significant leap forward in terms of graphics, physics, sound design, car modelling, opponent AI, environments and technical performance. Like its predecessors, the game released to critical acclaim and was a commercial success. It went on to become the best-selling game in the series to date, the second best-selling PlayStation 2 game, and the best-selling PlayStation 2 exclusive, having sold over 14 million copies since release. It is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. A landmark shift to the next generation of consoles, it is cited as a turning point for the series and the sim racing genre as a whole." (Wikipedia) "The game is now an even more realistic driving experience with lighting now having an effect on the game, such as buildings blocking the sunlight. There are smoke effects caused by skidding and even heat rising from the road." In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine placed the album at No.43 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. Now, after far-right homophobic US MAGA Gammon conservatives raged about the album’s cover art, 🌈 new music fans are looking into the history of the album. One of the most asked questions is how long has Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon been on the Billboard 200 chart. According to Billboard, the album remained on its charts for a whopping 972 weeks (roughly over 18 years)!!! The album was originally released on March 1, 1973! The album produced two singles, “Money” and “Us and Them.” While, “Us and Them,” did not formally chart, “Money” did. The song, which was released on February 4, 1974, ahead of the album, peaked at 13 on the Billboard 100 chart. The song went on to spend 15 weeks on the chart.

SIR SAMUEL CUNARD, 1ST BARONET DIED OTD 1865. British-Canadian shipping magnate whose liners, once seen in Greenland Dock, were a byword for safety and reliability in the early days of travel. On a misty morning, Greenland Dock looks as it did in 1695, refitting East India ships in an almost rural setting. No cargo traffic, so no walls or warehouses, but accommodating 120 ships ‘without the trouble of shifting, mooring or unmooring any in the dock for taking in or out any other’. Most East India Company ships were built in Rotherhithe, and this was a re-fitting base where they could be repaired and berthed in a sheltered anchorage, conveniently close to the dockyards at Deptford. Lined with trees on three sides to act as windbreaks, with the Russell family’s mansion at the western end. Greenland whalers began using the dock, so boiling houses were built on the south side to produce oil, eventually melting down a thousand tons of blubber each year in what the books called ‘an unfragrant industry’. Small flotillas left every two weeks to hunt the Arctic whale. When trade declined, Greenland handled timber as part of Surrey Commercial Docks, controlling 80% of London’s trade by 1865. Greenland Dock was lined with warehouses and piled timber, maintained by acrobatic deal porters known as ‘Blondins’ after Niagara’s  tightrope walker. In 1904, Sir John Wolfe-Barry who built Tower Bridge with Henry Marc Brunel, doubled the length and depth of Greenland Dock, now covering an area of 22 acres to a depth of 31 feet. Large cargo ships and even ocean-going liners could enter, including Cunard Line A-class vessels up to 14,000 tons. To this day, Cunard Way runs along one side of the dock and for many years passengers and cargoes in both directions, sailed regularly from Greenland Dock to the St. Lawrence, Canada. They were considered huge ships for so far upstream. Now the big ships are gone, but there are sail boat lessons at the Water Sports Centre. And trees and houses line the dock, as they did three hundred years ago.

Your periodic reminder that sometimes the women we feature are every bit as awful as some of the men in history. #OnThisDay, 28 April 1730 OS*, Anna Ivanovna is crowned the Empress of the Russian Empire. The Privy Council picked Anna as she was widowed and childless. They imposed a set of Conditions through which they would control her. She literally tore them up, and continued her uncle Peter the Great’s modernisation. Like many Russian rulers, men and women, she could be cruel, vindictive and abuse her power. *Old Style, the date used before Russia adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1917.

** #ChiesaCattolica #Massoneria #StoriaReligiosa #ineminenti #ottocento #illuministi #omega

#onthisday ⏪ April 28, 1906 Water slides, phantasmagoric attractions, western-style stagecoach attacks, aerocycloplanes. Since its inauguration on 28 April 1906, it was clear that the 1906 Milan EXPO, dedicated to the theme of transport, would leave the Art Nouveau pavilions to extend well beyond the gates of Parco Sempione. By integrating with the city, it brings the future directly “among the people” and fully establishes Milan’s entry among the European metropolises, rooting in everyday life, even before in the imagination, the idea of progress that still distinguishes it today. #fondazionepirelli #pirelli #pirellihistory #pirelliheritage #pirelliarchive #lucacomerio #expomilano @pirelli

#onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #oskar #schindler #geburtstag #birthday #geschichte #history #ww2 #frankfurt #frankfurtammain

Joe Calzaghe made his eighth defense of the WBO super middleweight title with a 1st round TKO of Mario Veit in Cardiff, Wales #OnThisDay in 2001. In the weeks leading up to the bout, Naseem Hamed and Lennox Lewis suffered high profile losses that shook British boxing. While in hindsight it may have been needlessly alarmist, many British boxing writers seemed to fear another loss when Calzaghe faced Veit. Calzaghe hadn't quite cleaned out the division, but he'd faced more proven opposition than Veit, who entered the fight at 30-0 against lower level opponents. But what exactly Veit brought to the fight wasn't even clear, because Calzaghe didn't give him a chance to show it. About 30 seconds into round 1, a left hand sent Veit to the canvas looking more surprised than hurt. Veit beat the count, but Calzaghe went after him and eventually caught him with another pair of left hands that hurt the challenger significantly. As Veit got up this time, it was apparent his legs had gone. The referee allowed the fight to continue very briefly, but Veit simply fell back to the ropes in danger of taking more punishment, and the fight was stopped. "There was a lot of pressure on me," Calzaghe said afterward. "I have been frustrated these past few years because I have always thought I was the best. Lennox [Lewis] and Naz [Hamed], they got beaten so it was all resting on my shoulders. I could not let anybody down tonight. I felt so strong and said to myself, left hand over the top and I can knock him out, and thank god it happened." Calzaghe and Veit would rematch a few years later with very similar, albeit prolonged results. #boxing #history #boxeo #boxe #boxen #historia #oldschool #vintage #throwback #classic #boxingheads #boxinglife #boxingtraining #boxinggym #sports #legend #legendary #joecalzaghe #marioveit #2000s #wales #cardiff
