Two SEATs found in Texas in the past few days, a 1st generation León and a 4th gen Ibiza. Both are from Mexico, and neither models were ever sold in the US. The 1st gen León is one quirky-looking car. For that matter so is the Ibiza. Spanish carmaker SEAT hasn’t sold any cars here yet, but it’s been said back in 2023 they plan to bring their Cupra brand to the US and Canada, though I cannot find any new information on that as of recently. Behold, the laziest rebadge ever. This is the first generation Dodge Attitude. The Dodge Attitude, or what we really see it as, an Accent, was exclusive to Mexico. Hyundai had no presence in Mexico, so they formed an alliance with the Mexican division of Chrysler, sorta like Mitsubishi and Chryslers alliance from the 70s. The first-gen Attitude began sales in 2006 and continued until 2011, where they started using the next generation Accent as the Attitude. Engine options were either a 96hp 1.4 or the 110hp 1.6, the same options for North America. There’s really not much to say, as it’s just an Accent, but for fun I’ve included of the latest Dodge Attitude generation. Here’s a 1980 Dodge Dart wagon roosting on the cobblestone streets of Chápala Mexico. The names we know for these 1976-1980 F-Body Mopars were Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volaré, but in Mexico the Dodge remained a Dart, while the Plymouth version became the Valiant Volare. 1980 has the Square headlights to up the malaise factor, being that this is the low water mark for automotive design in North America. All things considered these cars were great compared to other nightmare rides available at the time (I’m looking at you x-Body Pontiac Phoenix). The year after this the M-Body cars came out, the most successful of which was the venerable Dodge Diplomat. Those rides, complete with swapped front ends between divisions, only lasted a couple years south of the border before a terrible Mexican Recession made gas too expensive. This is NOT an AMC Gremlin! No, this is a VAM (Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos) Gremlin from 1977-1978 in what AMC in the States called Powder Blue. AMC had factories around the world in varying degrees of success. Their subsidiary in Mexico was enough of a hit that it evolved into its own company; VAM. They produced several of the same nameplates as AMC, often with a couple of subtle differences. For ‘77 and ‘78 the only visible differences on the Gremlin were the smaller bumpers and lack of AMC badging. When the Gremlin was replaced north of the border by the Spirit, the VAM Gremlin soldiered on, albeit with Spirit hallmarks built into the design. Check those last 2 pics. Those are 1979-1983 VAM Gremlins with the Spirit front clip, and larger rear quarter windows. Pontiac G3 Hatchback The Chevrolet Aveo (Daewoo Kalos) is one of the most common vehicles in Mexico. Even when the production ended in 2018, is easy to spot a lot of them in just some meters on any mexican street. But the Hatchback version it’s a kind of unicorn. Originally the Daewoo Kalos imported from Korea, was introduced by Pontiac in Mexico as Pontiac G3 in 2005 or so, offering the sedan and hatchback (In Canada, the HB was known as Pontiac Wave). In 2009, the Pontiac brand was discontinued in Mexico following the GM restructuring and the Kalos was reintroduced now as Chevrolet Aveo, and no longer imported from Korea to be assembled locally to serve as the cheapest sedan that GM could offer, since the Chevy (Corsa) sedan was discontinued too. Nissan Micra. ⚠️This car is not available in the United States⚠️ The Micra is available in Canada, and it’s badged as the Nissan March in Mexico. Due to my proximity to the Mexican border, I see more Mexican Nissan March than Canadian Micra. I road tripped to Utah earlier this year, and this Canadian Micra was in the parking lot of my hotel. The Candian market shares very similar automobile standards with the US, and one way to tell apart the Canadian model from Mexican ones besides reading the badge is by looking at the headlights. Canada and the US require orange reflectors on the sides of the car’s front end, but Mexico does not have this regulation. Nissan NP300 Frontier. ⚠️This car is not available in the United States⚠️ This generation of the Nissan Frontier or Navara is never sold in the US. We have our own version of the Frontier different from this one. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia on this truck: "On 11 June 2014, Nissan unveiled the third generation Navara, codenamed the D23 and released as the NP300 Navara. Series production commenced at a new $360 million plant in Samut Prakan, Thailand in July 2014 and deliveries began in August. The D23 is not available in the US or Canada." The most recent Mirage got a new facia but it hasn't trickled over to the Attitude yet. Here's the description from Wikipedia because it's a waste of time to paraphrase information that is already available online. "The Dodge Attitude is a badge-engineered subcompact sedan sold by Stellantis North America (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Chrysler Group LLC, and Dodge Chrysler LLC) in Mexico over three generations since 2006. Nissan March. ⚠️This car is not available in the United States⚠️ This car is available in Canada as the Nissan Micra, but it isn't available in the US. It’s commonly believed that the market for subcompact cars is not large enough in the US for companies to justify selling subcompacts here, which is a shame because these cars would be great for someone living in urban centers . . Many people have asked me, "since you're not far from the Mexican border, do you see many Mexican market cars?" The answer is surprisingly no. While you may see a few cars with Mexican plates on the interstate in LA/OC, they get immediately diluted into the vast local pool of USDM cars once they get off the freeway. In addition, many Mexican plated cars I usually see are just regular used USDM cars registered in Mexican border states adjacent to the US and they're not allowed to travel farther south of Mexican border states. Since I usually ride bike to photograph cars and going onto the freeway isn't an option, I really don't see a lot of Mexican market cars not available in the US.
