I took out one of my trensas and stood there looking at the contrast between the braided side and the straight side. It seemed symbolic of the dichotomy of being Mexican. Having both indigenous Purepecha blood and Spanish colonizer blood flowing through my veins. The "primal" side of me that loves to dance that is simultaneously connected to everything but not part of anything. The part of me that is keenly aware of what my body, mind, and spirit need and does not care to fit any mold. The part that does not want to share me with anyone because I'm overprotective of my essence and we know what happens when someone tries to tame that which is meant to be free. And the "civilized" side that seeks to understand and document. To evangelize others into better ways of being. That is aware of the barbarity of human behavior and understands the need for a God to mitigate cruelity. The primal and the civilized. Both protect me. Both inform how I navigate this world. Both make me who I am.

So here goes a little bit more of my story. I was born in Nuevo Casas Grandes Chihuahua. I was brought to the United States illegally. I was eight years old. Obviously I really didn’t have a choice and pretty grateful that I didn’t. All I do remember is sitting in a classroom when I was in third grade scared shitless without one word of English. Being extremely poor with a single mom trying to race three kids was extremely hard. But she showed us so many life lessons. All my life I wanted to be better and do better. But unfortunately, we fall into the same life cycle. And unfortunately the cycle usually is repeated. At 14 I became pregnant and by 16 I had my second child. Being a teen mom only complicated things. But now I knew I needed to break chains. And will continue to break them. In hopes that our kids see the endless possibilities. I’m extremely proud to be Mexican American. If you would ask me today, I was raised in Temecula don’t remember much of Mexico. My favorite holidays are Fourth of July and New Year’s. Fourth of July is because I know how fortunate I am to call myself an American citizen. Signs Preceding the End of the World is originally a Spanish novel by Yuri Herrera. I’m currently reading the translated version by Lisa Dillman for my English class. It literally swept me away! The book centers around Makina and her journey to cross the Mexico-US border. The story digs deep into immense struggles people have faced during the entire process of crossing: their involvement in the underworld, the dangers on the way, and eventually the hard labor in the new land to realize their American Dream. Not just that, these people usually go through an inevitable change in which they turn into “hybrid people” – their origin dies out while the new has yet to be born, particularly when there’s no going back… Makina at first felt the urge to go back but do you think she could upon arriving at the US? Makina is a girl boss. She didn’t want to be anyone’s girl. She taught her baby sister about female independence in a hotchpotch of all kinds of men. I bet you’d be thrilled reading those scenes when she dealt with jerks fearlessly and savagely or when she calmly negotiated with gangsters to let her cross. She’s tough. And her environment required her to be so. There’s no other choice. Signs Preceding the End of the World, though not a classic novel of English Literature, is worth celebrating as much as other great novels. The language used is so emphatic, sometimes as slow and stretched as if we were out of breath, on the verge of dying like the characters; at the same time, sometimes it feels fast, suspenseful, unexpected and exotic. I’m actually reading it, enjoying it while having to bear in mind the prompt for my English assignment :) Gonna write an essay about it! Have you read this novel?
